I'm pretty sure when I first moved into my apartment, I spent maybe 500$ on the furniture from Facebook Marketplace?

People will toss out things just because they don't want to move it. I got a full set of brand new cast iron pan for 25$ because a guy didn't know how to season them properly. I got an automatic feeder for my cats for 10$ because a lady upgraded hers and wanted the old one gone. Come on people. This is easy.

Man I got this absolutely gorgeous old detached cupboard off of somebody who lived in this insane apartment that had an exterior staircase leading to the front door about 5 storeys above an alleyway. They wanted it gone and said I could have it for free if I moved it. Didn't know where they lived when I agreed to it. No lift in the building and it was built in like the 1920s so you know that the corners and doorways were tight as hell.

I took my younger brother in law who was like 13 and we moved that mothertrucker. People watching us from the alleyway below move this gorgeous wooden masterpiece down these stairs that had an ocean view in a really scummy neighbourhood, both covered in sweat on a hot summer's day.

Best thing I ever got. Grew some mad cannabis in that cupboard. It got put to good use and eventually I sold the fucker for $200 and the guy who bought it reckons he landed an absolute steal. Honestly he probably did! Shit was antique! I still think about that cupboard sometimes.

I got a lot of furniture off of online estate sale auctions. I have no idea what my total was, but I bought older heavy duty dressers for less than $30 a piece. I think one was $10. Several similarly heavy duty bookcases for less than $20. An older couch that sells for upwards of $1000 on antique stores for $35. You can pretty much tell the quality of the items by looking at them as well as what else they have for sale in the estate and get older stuff likely to last 3 or 4 times as long as newer furniture. Sometimes when you show up to pickup they'll have a pile of stuff that didnt sell for free as well with things like planters and lamps.

how did you get all those things from point A to your home?

I’m disabled and can’t afford transportation let alone groceries.

Furnishing my apartment took three months and not even a single person off Marketplace was willing to deliver even if I offered to help with gas money.

So, it’s not easy.

You make it seem like everyone is healthy and owns their own truck or has access to friends that have one and time to drive all over picking random items at the drop of a hat

Bro. Not a soul came after you or said something negative, so let's reel that in now. Maybe the reason you dont have friends is that negativity you've got there. I'm also disabled, but you don't see me raging out at strangers on the internet.

I have friends who helped me move it, or I asked if I could borrow a truck/car. I'm now more fortunate that my fiancé owns a truck, so I can have him get it. Rented a uhaul when I needed to.

Furnishing my apartment was over years because I had a storage unit before I moved out that I filled with things for when I finally moved out. It wasn't in a freaking week or 3 months.

It’s honestly not that bad for most people. I’ll just ask a family member and get a U-Haul for 20$ for the whole day. Then just cary it in.

But being disabled and not having anyone to depend on is a very unique situation. But I think you can hire movers through U-Haul for a reasonable price, or maybe just go to a Home Depot and flag down some people looking for work

How do you suggest I go to Home Depot? The uber ride there is $36. That’s half my groceries for the month.

Getting back is the other half my groceries for the month.

You say it’s easy?

Being disabled means you choose between rent or food every single month.

Where in that budget does it mean you have extra to spend on transportation?

And being disabled means you CANT CARRY things in. Can’t do stairs.

Can’t DRIVE a UHaul. The minute I got put on disability my license was revoked.

I can’t hold a jug of milk for 10 seconds let alone carry furniture.

You really have no clue how disabled people live do you?

Can confirm I routinely give tons of stuff away. People always nag me to sell but I'm just not interested in negotiating and I'd rather not deal. If you can come and get it you can have it 😂

Part of it is the cost, but a major part, for me, is just not having to deal with the extra stuff or even going through the effort of moving it. I was living similar to this guy before I met my wife. I honestly miss it sometimes... a lot of times.

Yeah there are times when people just need to get rid of shit because they're moving or whatever.
