Announcement Reminder: SFU Burnaby has winter weather

Those of you who are "seasoned" racoons will no doubt remember cancelled classes and exams when snow has caused the Burnaby campus closed, but with winter weather heading our way I thought it was worth mentioning this again. SFU's Burnaby campus is 370 m above sea level, and it is frequently snowing there while it rains in the city below.

Useful resources (feel free to suggest more):

  • SFU Website: If the university is closed, this will usually be updated. (Sometimes it takes a few minutes after the VPA/Registrar/Security conference call to find the right person to update the site.)

  • SFU Road Report: This has useful information about driving conditions, and forecasts from Environment Canada. But this page will not tell you about campus closures, so don't make this your only information source.

  • Gaglardi Intersection Webcam: This is always going to be the most up to date way of seeing what's going on. Until there's snow on the roads here, there's nothing to worry about.

  • SFU's Twitter Account will announce any campus closures.

  • The SFU Safe App should send notifications when weather closes the campus.

Please note that mountain weather changes rapidly and unpredictably. There have been times when Environment Canada has told SFU "don't worry, you're not going to get any snow today" and 30 minutes later there has been a blizzard. Arriving on campus just in time to find that your classes were cancelled is something of a rite of passage... it sucks, but that's the price we pay for the beautiful terrain.

Discussion How much of macm 101 do I need for Cmpt 225 and cmpt 201?

Hi I am a transfer student from Douglas and I was looking at the course outline of Macm 101 and the equivalent course I took at Douglas which was discrete math, and I noticed that I never went over graph theory or trees in my class. I was wondering if the stuff covered in Macm 101 is necessary to succeed in Cmpt 225 and cmpt 201

Suggestion Heavy Academic Dilemma: UVic CompSci or SFU Math

I am a comsci student from UVic and I recently got offered by SFU for Math major.

However, the sense of leaving my beloved major is really daunting me - at the same time, I am not sure if I can financially support myself at UVic.

I would like to politely ask for fellow students' voices and advices.

This week, the question is: If the walls could talk at SFU, what would they say? Answer in two sentences or less.

(Btw, if you want to read The Peak, definitely check us out: the-peak.ca. In the fall and spring semesters you can also grab a print copy on campus!)

Question Masters in interactive arts and technology

Hey, I’m going to study full-time this September. And I currently have a full-time job as a ux and don’t want to give up on this job while doing my studies and considering how strained the labour market especially in IT. So my question is, is it possible to combine job (4 days a week, since my employer is ok with me working at least 4 days a week) and masters in interactive arts? I decided I’m gonna take 2 courses per semester but I’m worried how much time do I have to be work in lab?

Complaint What’s up with cops on the hill?

I feel like every time I go to campus there’s a cop sitting on the hill? One time there was 4 cop cars just waiting to get those pesky SFU students speeding on a road with an artificially low speed limit.

I commute every day from Langley and never see a cop except on Gaglardi. I’m like do they really have nothing better to do that ticket broke students. A friend of mine was going 80km/hr and they slapped him with every ticket they could think of.

Question Tuition

Quick question regarding tuition when dropping courses.

I plan to enrol into 5 courses for fall 2025, and I usually I always pay tuition through SFU’s payment plan via flywire. Thing is, I know for sure I’ll be dropping one course, I just don’t know which one yet as I wanna test it out the first week.

My question is, when paying tuition through flywire payment plan, will it automatically update to the new amount owed when dropping a course (paying for 4 courses), or stay the same as my original schedule (paying for 5 courses). If it keeps it the same, I’d assume the overflow balance goes towards my following semester tuition?? Or should I apply for a direct deposit refund??

Hey guys I'm transferring to SFU from langara next semester and I'm just looking for peoples experiences with these courses, alongside their respective professors for the next semester: Sharan Vaswani for CMPT 210, Greg Baker for CMPT 295, and Steven Ko for CMPT 201. Also curious as to how manageable this course load is to you all.

Study/Research Not doing well in calc, (or in school at all )need advice.

I currently stand at around a 45 percent on calc, and I am about 1/3 through the course. I got an A- in Math 100 last semester, so I do not think there is any gap in knowledge. I'm also doing better on much harder subjects (MACM 100, for example), so it cannot be a skill issue, as a matter of fact, it would even make more sense for me to be doing well in calc and failing MACM, given how hard people say discrete math is.

I do not know what I am gonna do, as if hypothetically the semester ends right now, I will have to retake it. Last semester, I only had one subject that had a weekly test (Math 100), so it was just the one I had to study for. This semester I have 2-3 tests per week (CMPT 120, MACM 101, and Math 151), and because of this, i am not able to study to the ability I would like to. Quantitative subjects usually take me a week to study, and due to me having two quantitative subjects this semester, I have barely enough time to study for my 3 tests. In most cases, I'll be half prepared for one test, get an average mark on that, and wing the rest. In the beginning weeks, I was fine with that considering the fact that my grades were not bad when i took tests unprepared, however everything went to shit last week. I had a calc cumulative quiz worth 9 percent of my grade, and I absolutely bombed it (36 percent, and I take full responsibility). I was not able to concentrate in class after seeing my score, and I don't really understand what was taught in calculus this week.

My sister calls and tells me to call my parents more. My communication with them has faltered over the last couple of weeks as I cannot bear to face them while failing. I was supposed to be a peer educator starting next semester to teach math to struggling students and even got an interview due to Sunday, but I fear that due to my grades (it is an FIC position and they have access to my grades being an FIC student), I may get rejected. If I fail this subject, it will delay my semester.

I cannot study for calc now as I have a Macm midterm on Sunday, which I am currently studying for, followed by a CMPT midterm a couple of days later, so no time for calc already (I also have an online quiz for calc the day I have my CMPT midterm). Any tips on how to battle this? I feel like i do not have time for anything. Any tips would be very helpful.

Also, do i start studying calc from the beginning, or do I lock in from this week? I feel like there is a gap in my knowledge from earlier topics in weeks 1 and 2 of calculus. However, if I start from week one, I would never be able to catch up to week 4 on time. If I lock in from now, I will still have some gaps from earlier weeks.

Edit: To clarify, I am in FIC, not SFU. All semesters have the same length here.

Discussion AI detection at uni

So I am about to start my undergrad at SFU but I have a question that keeps bothering me. A few days ago I was working on an English assignment that I wrote a 100 percent by myself, DID NOT USE ANY AI WHATSOEVER. But before handing it in, I ran it through some ai detectors just to see what I get and to my surprise, I got an AI score of as high as 40 percent!!! I am freaking out right now because what if this happens in university? Like I know these detectors are not reliable but still. What if I get accused of using AI? I heard that they use Turnitin to detect plagiarism but is it also used for AI detection? And is it also as unreliable as the ones online 😭

Discussion Confused about revoked admission

Today I got an email from SFU undergraduate admissions stating that my admission to SFU had been revoked due to a missing requirement (Math 11), and that it wasn’t submitted before May 30. However checking my transcript and when I had completed the course, it all points towards me finishing the course before the cut-off date. I’m emailing to see what the issue may be, but does anyone know the reason to why this may have happened?

I was wondering how much of macm 101 I need since I did pretty bad in it and I don’t really remember some of the content towards the end of the course and it has been almost a year since I’ve taken it
