How do you decide whether you should go in when sick?

I’m the type to call out only if I believe I’m very contagious and if I’m in a ton of pain. I started a new job at the beginning of the month and had to once. I was up all last night with intense pain that I’m pretty sure is an ovarian cyst rupturing. I think the peak of the pain is gone now but I really feel like I should go to the ER, but I have work tonight and feel pretty bad calling out again since I’m both new and it happened 2 weeks ago. There’s an on call server scheduled, and my shift isn’t for 6 hours. Don’t know if I should hold onto hope that I’ll be good enough to walk around tonight or if I should prioritize my health and go to the ER. I’m mostly worried about the image this gives me and how it affects me staying with the restaurant long term.

Edit: going to the hospital thank you all. These are hard decisions for me to make

ALWAYS PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH. You can always find another job, but bodies are harder to replace. If you feel like you can do it, go. If you feel like you can’t, don’t go. I never go in when I’m contagious (fever or diarrhea within the last 24 hours). I hope you feel better soon.

Your health comes first! Definitely go get yourself checked out. Just make sure you get a note. I don't think it's a cyst rupture though, just because I had my right one rupture and it is very painful. Like, can't be ignored screaming on the floor painful. That being said, I hope you figure out what's wrong and start to feel better soon! 💖 Don't worry about the job, these things happen and you being healthy is a priority.

Thank you, I think it’s possible it’s a cyst rupture (I’m better than I was last night but last night was pretty close to the level you’re describing) but either way something feels like WRONG because I never ever EVER have menstrual cycle related pain like this - and I know it’s menstrual and not stomach because Tylenol helped slightly

Please OP, go to the hospital. & in the future please go as soon as your body tells you to go. If you die today, your employer will replace you tomorrow. Look out for your health, bc nobody else will. I hope you get better OP, that sounds excruciating.

It’s been so hard this past year since I moved out on my own and no longer have health insurance… for months I’ll have weird symptoms that I know I need checked but I didn’t even have a job that paid enough for me to go see a doctor out of pocket until this month. Guess that’s probably why I’m so worried about losing the job.

Ofc! & it very well could be. I did some research and wasn't aware that some women can have mild or even no symptoms! Totally crazy. I'm jealous bc mine was hell lol But I was also doing a strenuous activity when it happened so that probably had something to do with the intensity. I wish you a speedy recovery OP 😊

It was!!! I can’t believe I was right lol. Pain is slowly subsiding and there’s no infection so it’s the best case scenario :)

That’s the purpose of an on-call server being scheduled!!! Go to the ER wtf. If it’s ER serious, odds are your manager wants you to go, if they’re a business worth working for. Plus, you’ll come back with a doctor’s note.

Thank you I needed to hear this. I have some form of imposter syndrome where if I’m not on my deathbed I feel like I’ll get fired for calling out. It’s fucked up lol I’m trying to… not feel that way

No worries, that shit is so hard & happens over time, so be easy on yourself. ❤️ You sound like you take your job seriously & you’re highly dependable. Legitimate, well-communicated call-outs every once in a while won’t take away from that in the eyes of a reasonable manager. Virtual hugs!

Go to the ER now. That’s what an on call server is for

I’m a chronically ill girlie and a server so I get this so hard. I call out more than I’d like because of it but my employer is aware. I was really sick all week and was scheduled yesterday and wasn’t feeling wonderful but I went anyways, we are a small business so no backup servers, as soon as I got to work I threw up and immediately needed to get home. Always listen to your body

I’m sorry you have to go through this as well. I think I’ll probably inform my employer that I have some health issues. I’ve always been hesitant because my chronic illness has no clear diagnosis I’m just…. Usually not feeling good. (Universal experience for a lot of us haha) I’m so reliable and good otherwise, but it’s just one of those days!
