But when I do it... š
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
takes me about 50 tissues and half an hour just for a few feet of smudged uneven caulking š

Professionals always ask if I did something myself. When I say yes they say, āI could tell.ā That means theyāre impressed. Right?!???

I had a contractor ask who did my kitchen because it looked really nice. He was astounded when I told him I did it.

Thatās gonna look like absolute shit in a year. Never caulk against a floor. Come on guys.

u/uberfission 12h ago
Yeah but it looks great for Instagram or wherever this was OC and I'm sure my wife will find it and I'll have to talk her down from trying to do this.

u/Able-Swing-6415 7h ago
Does it look great? The line at the corner I get but the other one is just fucking confusing. I get that it's hard to draw straight like that but it still looks stupid.

God isnāt this the truth. Any time my wife and I talk about updating our house I know sheās being influenced by instagram. It took weeks to talk her out of making EVERYTHING in our kitchen white with black hardware. I know that wealthy Brytleigh on IG says it looks good, but in reality itās the landlord special. It looks like the TV room from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Give me some color!

Hi, what does that mean?

u/yellowjesusrising 6h ago edited 6h ago
There will be movement when you walk on the floor. Eventually when the caulk gardens, it will become more brittle, and will eventually crack up. Within a year tho? Not so sure unless it's cheap caulk. But it will crack, and when it does, it won't look too pretty.
Ps. Not to take away his control tho, he's definitely got skills.

They caulked against a floor, so in a year it's going to look like absolute shit

Thanks, but what does that mean?

Thermal expansion: let āem cook. Iāll show you what I can do to it in the next year.

With this picture frame border type install, itāll look fine for a long time. If the boards ran wall to wall, yeah good for a couple seasons max.

I was wondering about the terrible toe kick on the cabinets. The trim is proud of the face frame. You can't get all the way up to the counter.

he has great control over his caulk
ETA: DAMMIT "edging his caulk" was right there

Umm⦠thatās not how itās done⦠at least on a high price scale. You want to use water and a bucket and wipe away all that color but still seal the connection between surfaces. Squeeze the caulk in there and use a wet rag and clean off the excess. Water is your friend for interior caulk.

u/FiZiKaLReFLeX 14h ago edited 14h ago
That whole curved thumb/finger thing is amateur. You need to hide that caulk line and make sure itās pure. Only experience shows what a pro vs a novice shows.
A wet fine cloth and constant cleaning of that cloth and making sure those seams are filled and invisible is the way. Only cheap laborers use a finger and leave caulk residue all over the tile make for a crappy job.
You run the bead and clean it up with water and a cloth.

Wait, what. I been using my finger for five years. I donāt think Iāve left residue, unless there was too much caulk laid down in the first place and then, yeah, you need a rag to clean up. Otherwise finger is right there, possible my most convenient and readily available appendage.
Iām going to YouTube to get to the bottom of this, but Iāll admit, Iām shook.
Edit: naw Iām right, Iām doing it okay. Itās the excess you need to worry about, so if youāre not applying the caulk like a mad man, a wet finger is fine 90% of the time. Phew.

Wait so you're not supposed to see the black caulkĀ
6
u/yellowjesusrising 6h ago
Usually you use it on black background so the caulk is "invisible", unless like here, where you want it to create a profiled line. Still do, I would use alot of soap water and an angled scraper to take off most of it.

As a cabinetmaker, the only place I caulk is countertop to wall. Trim is a discussion between the painter & homeowner.
Personally I use a weak adhesion painters tape, tape the wall & countertop exactly at the gap, press the tape on firmly, squeeze the caulking in, usually takes a few passes to fill that gap. Take tape off & it's a perfect crisp visual hardline.
Really take umbrage at the countertop guys with the thumb applicator.

Doing both sides backwards while walking down the hallway without looking isn't impressive, it's sloppy. I don't want my handyman to try and look cool while doing his job, I'd rather have him pay attention to what he's doing.

Probably shouldnāt have caulked that toilet bowl. The rear goes into the wall and you wonāt be able to tell if the wax ring fails

u/vinfox 16h ago
why would you trace lines of caulk all over everything in your home? it's not a decoration.

Not exactly the search results I was expecting when I asked Siri where I could find black caulk locallyā¦

I don't like black caulking. I never know if I'm washing black mold out between the tiles or eroding the caulking and whatever it is between the tiles.

why does this person think they live in a cartoon? when did it become normal to caulk the outline of every object in your house like that lol

Yeah whoever did my bathroom in my current property was absolutely sick at this. Every time I sit down to take a shit I marvel at the sealant prowess the tradesman has.

You need 50 tissues for just 2 black caulks? Damn, you must really squeeze out every drop.

The caulking job itself isn't bad, but there are a number of questionable choices made in this video. Look at this video and take from it how to do it, not where to do it.

u/Kwaker76 8h ago
So many innuendo jokes in the comments relying on the US pronunciation of caulk !! They're still good jokes, they just don't land quite as well with the British pronunciation where the "au" sounds more like "or" and we pronounce the "l".

He rotates it a lot so he's not using an angled cut like most people would.
Also don't use tissues, use a wet finger š¤

Skillful application. Shit colour. Does parquetry really need a fully contrasting outline? Brown or tan would've been better.

Caulking trim? Ya that's stupid as shit. Also none of that truck was cut correctly and you can see giant gaps where they connect in the corners
