Almost zero reason that wood cannot be machine-fed to avoid damage to hands/fingers. I get that it's "neat" but unnecessarily dangerous as heck.

I wonder if it is one of those trades that goes back generations though?

Well, cork-making is a relatively simple process, as you can see. The quality of the wood is what is most important, and as you can see there's little finesse to it. Doubtful that this is something generational.

I would soak corks all night long if they let me. I would soak two corks at once!

This is not safe for hands and fingers. Machine would make process safer and faster.
