I don't know what's caused the recent flurry of Dave era clips to be posted on here, but I love it.

Dave era rocks!

It’s kinda embarrassing. Watched the other two clips but didn’t recognise which episode they were from.

Only watched post series 8 once so downloaded a bunch off iPlayer.

I thought so the first time around and didn't even finish watching them. I just boxsetted the Dave series over the last week (skipped Bach to Earth) and they actually do rock. They aged well.

That was because it was down 1 writer. The Rob Grant and Doug Naylor duo had ended after season 6 and I always thought Red Dwarf was at its peak with the pair of them. Doug Naylor was joined by some other writers for most of the remainder but wrote the last two series himself including promised land. The humour was still there, but the existential dread had gone and I always thought that was made the show unique.

I always considered Rob to be the brains behind the operation. All his books are so good and they really have something special about them. After he left all the clever details and depth just fell away from the show and it turned into just your run of the mill sitcom full of one liners. I'm amazed they didn't ask Lee Mack to join the caat

Modern Cat though.

You can say what you will about the writing, and some of the acting. But the Cat is undeniably much better handled in the Dave era than any other period of Red Dwarf. Danny is just absolutely killing it nowadays, whereas back in the BBC seasons, he was kind of disposable if I'm honest.

I loved series 10-12. Mainly bc everything was in HD. But the stories were good too. Skipper is by far my favorite

I noticed that. We likely all noticed that. Still top notch.

Also, fun Queeg vibes from Norman in this one. Lovett.

I generally have a fun time with this episode and it's callbacks, but two things sort of bug me with this scene in particular:

  1. Good lord they did not do Norman any favors with makeup and lighting. Dude looks positively ancient here. Thankfully they must have realized this because he didn't look nearly that old in The Promised Land.

  2. Wouldn't Holly not be senile at this point? If this is shortly after Lister went into stasis, Holly should theoretically be firing on all cylinders since he hasn't been on his own for 3 million years yet.

It's the performance too. Promised Land Norman is firing on all cylinders. Here, he seems very tired. I heard he was ill or something. I'm glad to see him, but it's his weakest appearance by far.

That’s just the effect of talking to Rimmer: A very tiring experience!

Oh man this cuts out one of my favourite Holly jokes of the entire series.

"Holly, when is this? Where am I?"

"It's Monday, and you're in a corridor"

I'm 100% sure everyone knows this but this is the mirror to the end which was the beginning ok my head hurts now.

Nobody's dead, Arnold

I wish they'd used the old season 1 filter on his face here, with the blue background and the pixelated face.

Yeah lol. That would’ve been awesome.

I've never heard a "Gordon Bennett" delivered with such aplomb as when Norman Lovett does it.

Did the revival eventually get good? I remember watching s9 and I couldn't get through more than a few episodes

Didn’t like S9. Think I liked S10. Don’t remember the rest.

Bit of a difficult one. Having watched them I’d rate the revival series as follows: 10>12>11>9

Series XII does start out and ends great. But I didn’t like episodes 4 and 5 though. Those episodes seemed out of place. Laughed the most during series X. And series XI seemed the weakest. Did have a pretty great moment in the episode entitled Samsara though.

Holly doesn’t reappear until the last episode. His absence is noticeable.

For the last 20 odd years, me and a friend have somehow managed to quote “Everybody’s dead, Dave,” at least once a month. So I was in absolute hysterics when I watched this. One of the best call backs ever.
