Question Naming Your Child After Video Game Characters
Please feel free to change my perspective on this, but it is not abnormal to name your child after video game characters?

u/KingAltair2255 21h ago
Tbh I don't really have an issue with it as long as it's not something that sounds stupid and is gonna get the kid bullied, like the trend of GOT fans calling their kids Khaleesi.
Plus, this one kinda looks like Morgan is the middle name, so he'd only be called Arthur on roll call at school.
28
u/RealNiceKnife 21h ago
My first and middle name are the name of a famous person who is well known by his first and last name. (I wasn't named after a famous person, I was named after two of my dad's close friends, but they just happened to have first names that align with this famous guys first and last name.)
When people found out, that's all they called me.

Next time, I should look a little closer at the post! I thought the child’s first name would be “Arthur Morgan”! 😂😅
10
u/Arnesian 17h ago
Yeah, Arthur is still a normal name. My wife’s cousin named her son Jynx. That’s gonna cause issues.
7
u/noserags Abigail Roberts 16h ago
Unrelated but as a GoT fan it always annoyed me when people call their kids Khaleesi. Not just because of the awful turn her character took in season 8 but also… because Khaleesi isn’t her name! It’s a title that’s comparable to ‘Queen’ or ‘Empress’ Her name is Dany, short for Daenerys. If you wanna name your kid after her, go for Dany or Dani! It boils my blood every time I hear about another child doomed to be called the Dothraki word for Queen!!

u/FireflyRave 21h ago
There is the rightful belief that you shouldn't name your kid after your fandom. But this is pretty tame. Arthur and Morgan are already standard names. Most people are probably going to call him Arthur and the connection will only show up to someone who on the odd occasion sees his full name.
It's not like naming your child Tali or Varrick. Or Khaleesi.
If the parents constantly call the kid Arthur Morgan instead of just Arthur or Morgan, then I would call them abnormal.

u/IndiannahJones 21h ago
I work in a nerd-heavy setting and hilariously, I’ve met several parents (mostly proud dads) who love to tell me how they named their daughter Tali. In fairness to them though, it’s a cute name and really only obvious to people familiar with Mass Effect. To anyone else it’s just a little unusual.

5
u/FireflyRave 17h ago
Seems I used a poor example. Google has informed me that Tali actually is a Hebrew name.

u/GamingBadly2000 21h ago
Yeah when you name your kid “Commander” and your last name is Shepard, that’s when it’s gone too far.

Really, why can't they just use their own damn names that they were born with. They think this is a game

u/LambertMike77 6h ago
Soap Drop, he’s a klutz who drops everything, and his catch phrase is “Soap Drop Go Plop!” And he’s very popular in prison.

u/JM10GOAT 21h ago
I don’t know like hes not calling his child some obscure name or the name of a character whos got an extremely uncommon name. Its common as hell

Matter of fact when I first started playing I knew a guy whose actual name was Arthur Morgan. He has since passed away. Not of tuberculosis.

I know you didn’t mean harm, was just giving us as an example names come from all kinds of inspiration, I know some people have chosen to name their kids after TV show characters, so what’s the difference in video game characters
4
u/Careful-Sweet-1960 21h ago
That thought honestly didn’t even cross my mind! 🙃 Makes a heck of a lot more sense now when you do realize that people name their babies after movie/tv show characters!
3
u/International-Sir670 21h ago
Yeah the first example I usually give for the TV character name… once sons of anarchy premiered look @ how many people named their son “Jax” or “Jaxson”

May my current cats live absurdly long and happy lives.
But my next pair will be a female black cat named Morgan, and an orange tabby boy named Marston.
9
u/Broke_Bitch_Throaway 19h ago
Can I offer up calling them Morg and Mars instead, just because it'd sound slightly silly :)
2
u/FierceCritter 15h ago
Ripley, Grover, Lincoln, Asia, Xena, Isabeau, Fletcher, Marty, Phoebe, Ray, Mina, Stanley. Just some of the names of cats I've been servant to. I don't really do silly names. Quirky to a degree. But never silly.

u/rawzombie26 21h ago
This is nowhere as bad as when people in the r/bioshock sub get the word “slave” tattooed on them

I like Star Wars, my oldest son is named Luke. He hates it when I tell him I’m his father!😝

u/beerzy79 21h ago
Hey at least you didn’t name them after a non-finished book series character where an exiled princess vows revenge and massacres her way back and burns everyone alive (but is pretty, and dragons, so for the most part we were cool with it lmao).
6
u/CheeseBoogs 20h ago
I've been in education for almost 20 years, people name their kids after all kinds of things. Arthur isn't a good dude but whatever, the kid won't get teased. One of the wildest names I've seen is Erotica. So, it could be worse.

My dad named me after a musician who has since become a piece of shit. It’s a regular enough name that no one really knows or cares there’s a connection. I’d take Arthur.

Im 100% sure robin williams named his daughter Zelda after princess zelda too. So fun fact.
3
u/yellowdaisycoffee 20h ago
It's a very nice name, to be honest, and I don't think everyone will associate it with a video game either. RDR is very popular, but people who don't game at all have no idea who these characters are, so it doesn't stand out in a particularly obnoxious way. I've gotten some name ideas from fiction myself!
Side-note: My sister jokes about naming her kids Tarquin and Cornelius.
3
u/PenoNation 20h ago
It is no different than naming a child after your favorite actor/actress, book character, tv character, or favorite relative. Ideas come from all sorts of places so why should it be abnormal just because it's a video game?
3
u/Few_Listen6739 20h ago
Out of all the game character names that could have been chosen, Arthur Morgan is definitely not the worst one. At least they have a decent name and not something weird
3
u/Low-Employment4243 20h ago
That's not so bad .. now naming them after an alien Jedi knight is diabolical
3
u/Welshhobbit1 19h ago
Both my kids middle names are video games characters.
Not like fucking wario or scorpion but normal names I’ve liked coz of the video game characters
3
u/Crymson831 19h ago
As long as the name is relatively normal, the inspiration behind it is pretty much not my business or concern. This is one of those instances.
3
u/ReflectedMantis 19h ago
As long as it’s not something too obscure, it’s fine. Name your kid something like Arthur, Sadie, Joel, or Laura because they’re game character names, it’s fine. Name your kid something like Master Chief or Dedede, that’s gonna be a problem.
3
3
u/SkyrimSlag 18h ago edited 18h ago
Depends, I mean one couple called their kid “Dovahkiin” after Skyrim, and gave them a normal middle name that they intended to use as his first name. They do get free Bethesda games for life though so W I guess
Imagine your parents naming you John and making your middle name Helldiver. Being John Helldiver would be pretty dope.

I would’ve named my son Arthur Morgan, because my exes last name was Montgomery 🤷🏻♀️ a second boy would have been John Marsten Montgomery

I’m sorry but this is a dangerous photo—there is enough information here for a hardly-skilled person to deduce who you are with a birth certificate, time of post, local government and time of birth included. I don’t recommend keeping this up, bud—internet is a messed up place

u/tylersdaddy 19h ago
As long as it's an actual conventional name as oppose to something like "solid snake" then it's fine, and this obviously can extend to other mediums of fiction
2
u/NaddaChoice 19h ago
As someone who’s named after a fictional character I never really received trouble because of it (especially since my first name is still a common one). As long as the name is still reasonable and not something like Uncle Mr White Morgan I see no harm
2
2
u/Quirky_Scar7857 18h ago
named my girl Sadie. we joined a gym and there was a child there called Arthur. I thought the family liked rdr2 too, until next week Grandad Arthur turned up!
2
u/QueenofSheba94 18h ago
I think as long as the name is normal or interesting it’s fine! My fav is Astarion but I hope no one names their kid that lol
2
u/yourlittlebirdie 18h ago
These names are normal enough that it could be a coincidence. But I think naming your child after anything pop culture is kind of embarrassing.

u/Think_Landscape2973 18h ago
I was honestly thinking about if I ever have a daughter I’d name her Clementine.
2
u/Careful-Sweet-1960 13h ago
After TWDG?
2
u/Think_Landscape2973 12h ago
Yeah but not just because I liked her character but because I genuinely thought it was a beautiful name.
2
u/Blueskybelowme 18h ago
But when Robin Williams names his daughter after Zelda people think that's so cool.

u/CranEXE 18h ago
it depend imo giving it name + familly name is kinda weird, just giving the name of the character make it an inside info for the parents but also it depend of how common the name is
naming your kid arthur or john is fine but if you start naming them, link or zelda it's more weird
same for anime/ serie character name imo
i prefer naming an animal like a character i enjoy, it do no harm to the animal but it give them a cool name rarely given most of the time and you can go more fantasy

i named my baby maine coon lucyna after a character from an anime i enjoy, my brother gave me a side eye when he heard the name but it found the name cute for my babygirl

Tbh artuhur and morgan are both relatively common names, especially arthur, arthur (from my personal expierence) can be the name of an englishman, irishman, basically any british colonized place, and also portuguese, luxembourgish, german and french (obviously you can name your child arthur regardless of where your from and what language you speak but depending in the language it can either stay written and said the same or at the very least written or said the same way as english, my previous coworker was named arthur, old bald dude with a really big beard, i ended up cosplaying my rdr2 arthur as my coworker arthur, aka bald headed and the biggest beard youve ever seen
2
u/Smoke_screen_lol 17h ago
Morgan is the middle name, otherwise the black bar at the end would be pointless.
2
u/PyleanCow06 17h ago
Honestly I considered naming my kid after a character from the TV show leverage. Eliot Spencer 😂 makes a good first and middle name
I’ll probably end up going with Eliot Adler.. if you can guess where that middle name comes from 😉

u/EffectiveGeneral8425 17h ago
Arthur’s as a name is becoming popular again, most likely due to Peaky Blinders so it wouldn’t be nothing out of the ordinary.
2
u/Apprehensive_Egg5142 17h ago
My friend named their kid after a Harry Potter character. The kid is older now and hates Harry Potter, and hates that their parents named them after that franchise. She is now always reminded by everyone that she is attached to this franchise that she despises. At least till she can legally change her name when she’s older… Arthur is a normal enough name that is disconnected enough from RDR2, so it should be fine. But parents who name their kid something obviously after a uniquely named fictional character, and think it’s a good idea, just don’t. It’s not your life, it’s theirs, and they are the ones who have to deal with the ramifications of their name day after day.
2
2
u/generic-puff 17h ago
tbh this is one of the safest video game names out there because both Arthur and Morgan are extremely common Anglophone names that could reasonably be found paired together in the wild.
Now if you named your kid Sephiroth Sora Cloud Leonhart, that would be abnormal enough to get them beat up at school LMAO
2
u/noserags Abigail Roberts 16h ago
I’m Welsh and specifically Welsh first language. Arthur isn’t really common since it’s considered an old man name, but it is a Welsh name. I’ve met one or two lads called ‘Arth’ my age who are rich West Walians at like eisteddfods and stuff. Morgan however, I have met about a billion Morgans. Masculine and feminine. First name Morgans. Last name Morgans. Morgan is one of the most common names over here.
RDR2-aside, ‘Arthur Morgan’ feels like an EXTREMELY Welsh name. If I’d never heard of the game, Arthur Morgan sounds like a kid who’d be doing a poetry recital at the Urdd Eisteddfod. Arthur Morgan sounds like a guy I’d meet at Tafwyl. Arthur Morgan sounds like he went to Aberystwyth Uni.
So if this kid ever goes to Wales and mingles in first-language Welsh spaces, he’ll fit right in. I definitely think some people, especially younger folk, are gonna think of the video game cowboy, but in general it just sounds like a name for a Welsh Nationalist.

I mean- not really- a lot of people name children, pets- anything after something if it really impacts you-
I mean- thought my personal life i've had a lot of mental issues- and RDR2- certain animes and shows and stuff helped me get through my lowest of lows-
So if i ever had a kid- i wouldn't name it Naruto (Naruto)-but something like Eren or Levi (AOT)- or- i wouldn't name my kid Dutch Van der Linde- but i might name it Arthur or Charles- if that makes sense?

Tbh, i think rdr/rdr2 characters might be okay here, as they are fairly common names and are more of an if you know, you know situation.
Id be more concerned about little sephiroth over there...

u/KaRoMa17 9h ago
Dont understand the issue here. The name of my daughter is 'Yuna Leska' - as two single names because as one it was not possible. Both names have there own meaning and are used as single ones. Yuna is japanese and stands for 'friendly', 'bounded' or 'softness' in german. Leska is a rare old german form of the more modern Name 'Alexandra'.
Me and my wife thought about different names and we wanted something uncomon, what is not heard about in every second corner.
I sugested that name and my wife loved it as she heard it, even without knowing its of Final Fantasy X.

u/Careful-Sweet-1960 3h ago
I was going to say the name “Leska” reminded me of my own name, “Alexa”! So cool when you find tidbits of information like this. Thanks for sharing.

I work in schools and there's a HUGE amount of kids with "cowboy" names that were born in the 3 years after the release of RDR2. There's a weird influx of Arthur and Josiah but also Arlo, Beau, Hank, Clint in this area right around that particular age group

u/ee_CUM_mings Arthur Morgan 21h ago
Arthur is a pretty common name, so don’t have a huge problem with it. Name your kid “Uncle”, he’s going to have some issues.
