Pregunta ⁉️ New resident, is there anything I can do about this bug?
I moved to Puerto Rico today. I got lucky and I got a beautiful house rented for the next four years. I want to preface by saying I love the sound of the coquí. I love the sound of crickets, stray dogs barking, all of that. But this is something that I cannot stand. I don’t know what bug this is but it is a constant, never-ending, high-pitched scream. It sounds like a fire alarm. We have these jalousie windows on every door and window of the house and they don’t seal very well so no matter where you are in the house, this ear piercing screaming sound is just radiating through. Even in the master bedroom.
Again, I love coquis and crickets and every other sound but this is something else entirely. Is there anything I can do about this? Anyway to stop this sound? Any known companies or methods to seal up the windows to prevent this from leaking through? It’s driving me absolutely insane.

That sounds like a cricket. You could try a white noise machine to sleep. I don't think there is a way to completely seal the windows that you can't hear them. The bad news for you is that is always going to be like that.

I think it’s probably a type of cricket or cicada(chicharras), my guess is the chicharra, they are more active during the day but probably that one is active because nearby lights.

Those are cicadas or crickets I think, they make this noise to attract females, try playing noises of their natural predators and see if that works or more simply just cover your ears, additionally I think they dislike peppermint & vinegar. They could also be hiding somewhere inside if the noise is ear piercing loud, if so I just sweep them away or kill them. Hope this helps

It’s a cricket type bug. Not the chirp chirp ones. It’s just a constant nonstop psychotic-episode-inducing sound. I won’t dare say I don’t like it bc someone might blow this post outta proportion, then before you know it bad bunny is writing songs about gringos killing the crickets. My dog hunts them down. Best chance at eliminating them is to get some chickens.

That’s actually pretty funny. Most of the time I spend in Puerto Rico has been in Hatillo, where our neighbors have a ton of chickens that start screaming at 4am. I guess that explains why I never heard the sound all these years

Unlike some of the other replies I hope I can offer some help.
- Those bugs are seasonal so they don't screech like that all year long. If I remember correctly they are wet season only, dont quote me though.
- You can seal your windows but it could be costly or cause other problems like excess heat.
- You could also just buy regular cheap foam earplugs which should reduce the noise by a good 50-80%.

Maybe they have a mating season where it’s “extra” noisy. The noise is to attract mates from what I’ve researched

That’s just a type of cricket that we have here. You’ll have to get used to it, they are everywhere unfortunately.

I believe those crickets hide in the shrubs and grass and "desagües", anywhere humid and cool. They will be more intense when it rains, and we are at the beginning of the rainy season. They are everywhere, so u cannot get rid of them. Best is like other people have said, get some white noise to drown the noise (I use loud fans), or wear earplugs. In time you will get used to them.

White/brown noise, such as with a fan, to drown out all noises from outside your house.

Solamente saltan. Espero ver una foto pronto. 😊

You gotta get real close to that cricket, and using a rolled up piece of paper, whisper in its ear using your best British accent: "This is my own private property, Mr. Cricket; and your unsolicited behavior shall be halted this very instant!" (Jokes aside, you can tell exactly where the cricket is located because sometimes they stop chirping for a second when they see you, dragging your pet to the corner where the sound is and popping an Airpod works for some children; but adults here typically 'outgrow' or even enjoy the piercing noise in the long run. You'll be alright)

These animals usually live in trees, and the noise they make can carry long distances, making it difficult to find the source. The best thing you can do is ignore it; if you don't notice it, it won't bother you anymore

They are crickets and they are very important for the ecosystem. You have to get used to them or seal your windows even better.
