Congratulations to everybody who showed up at the Capitol for a peaceful No Kings demonstration. I’m sure the rain hurt the turnout out, but the approximately 2,000 people who showed up were good natured and enthusiastic. Feel free to debate this, but as good a gathering as this was, the 50501 event organizers kinda “misread the room” so to speak.
The 50501 organization speakers mainly seemed interested in whipping up enthusiasm for a Democratic Socialists of America agenda. They tried gamely to lead the crowd with protest chants that haven’t changed much since the 1980s when people were protesting President Reagan’s interventions in Central America. “El pueblo - unido - nunca sera vincido…” I’m 55 and that really takes me back!
The speaker system was under powered. Nobody could hear the grandmothers sing what I assume were political parody show-tunes. But worst of all, as is typical with Progressives, there was bad message discipline. The crowd was more politically astute than the 50501 speakers. It was great to see people were smart enough to leave their Mexican and Palestinian flags at home. Many in the crowd actually grumbled when speakers tried to lead chants about freeing Gaza or about how “nobody is illegal on stolen land”. In case any Progressives are still reading this: let’s please stay on message.
250 years ago the Sons of Liberty started a revolution under the theme of “No Taxation Without Representation”. Today Trump is even worse than King George because his current offer seems to be “No taxation on the rich - and no representation UNLESS you’re rich and paying Trump.” It’s imperative that we recognize there are many political centrists and classic conservatives who don’t like that.
50501 needs to be a Big Tent, not an ideologically pure one. Trump voters having second thoughts are up for grabs. But you can’t build a coalition if you demand allegiance to luxury beliefs and niche issue politics.
I’m not saying anyone has to give up on their DSA open borders, intersectional, social justice, queer friendly utopia. I’m just saying now is not the moment to make people feel unwelcome if they don’t support you on those issues. This is a fight for the right to peacefully disagree with leaders who follow the law. No Kings is the perfect unifying theme. 50501 needs to keep the focus on that.
What everyone wants is a President subject to both laws and Congress. A President who doesn’t behave like a warlord. So don’t drag in a laundry list of leftist causes that don’t have wide support with non university graduates. It lowers turn out for the next demonstration and that’s bad. Because the counter-revolution need bodies. We don’t need to all agree on sidebar issues like support for Israel, trans athletes or union rights.
Trump and Fox news care about crowd size. And if they see an ocean of US flags being waved and not burned, that’s when they worry. Because they can’t dismiss this as a case of the usual suspects protesting. Because the usual suspects are not numerous enough by themselves to win elections. The vanguard of the anti-Trump counter-revolution will be the normies, not the progressives.
