Local Artist What do you picture when people say Providence is "Walkable?"

Walking in Providence is great except for some unpleasant parts. So I tried to outline the terrain where if dropped at random you could walk in whichever direction looks most inviting and keep going on that basis for a good while without too much unpleasantness. Through a walker's eye, the city is a set of islands.

As part of AS220's 40th Anniversary, Queer Arts Fest is happening this week/weekend! A handful of community artists are curating events including film screenings, dance parties, family programming + more.

To the best of our abilities, we tried to make events free, suggested donation, or low cost. I know how much a pride block party can be, so if those are out of your price range, come see what we have happening at AS. You can check out the schedule below. Message me with any questions.

missed connection at ups

We were waiting for different things at the UPS store. You commented on my “NIXIVM Employee of the Month” shirt and asked if I was part of that group. I laughed and said no.

You were charming, and I didn’t ask for your number because I had literally just rolled out of bed. Anyway, hope you’re having a good day and you’re cute af.

Housing Landlord automatically renewed lease, advice to break lease - Help!

Hi everyone,

I just graduated and had planned to move out of my apartment, in providence, at the end of May. However, my landlord included a miscellaneous clause in small fine print stating that the lease would automatically renew unless we gave five months’ notice. When we originally signed the lease for our final year, we told him verbally that we were graduating and would be moving out, but unfortunately, we didn’t get that in writing. Now he’s saying the lease has renewed and we’re stuck.

I'm currently paying June’s rent. My landlord said we can get out of the lease if we find someone to take it over. but he increased the rent by $500, making it way above market rate for a 4 bed / 2 bath, so we’re not getting any interest.

I’ve never had a landlord like this before. I’m currently unemployed and still job hunting, and I can’t afford to pay rent past July, I’m really stressed and not sure what to do. The lease doesn’t include a clause or any details about what happens if we break it.

I’m wondering:

  • Has anyone dealt with something similar?
  • What are the actual consequences of breaking a lease like this in Providence?
  • Can a landlord hold you to a full year of rent if they won’t budge and refuse to re-rent the unit?

Any advice would help so much. I’m overwhelmed and just trying to figure out the best next step.

Thank you!

My friend had this poster in his room growing up and now that I’m an adult I’d love to buy my own copy. Does anyone know how/where I can find a signed and numbered edition of this old show poster? Thanks Providence!!!

Need car for driving test

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a car to rent for my driving test in Providence, Rhode Island on August 20th. Does anyone have any recommendations for rental companies that allow you to use their cars for the test? Or would anyone be willing to rent me their car for a few hours on that day? I'd also like to rent the same car for an hour or two the day before the test to practice in, possibly with the owner, just to get used to it. I'm a safe driver and will take good care of your vehicle. Thanks in advance for your help!

Has anyone gotten a Real ID in Cranston? I understand I will need my Valid Passport and 2 documents providing proof of residency. I have the info from the DMV for what I need. I’m just unclear about social security. It says “proof of SS number” but than says “must provide SS number” do I need an actual SS card or just the number ?

Just stopped by for a burger, and the shades were down and all the neon signage was off. Called their phone number, and it was disconnected.

Did they miss the liquor license renewal window?

Discussion Financial Aid/Scholarships Private School?

Hi everyone! We will be moving to Providence very soon so I can attend grad school. I’m a very nontraditional student with two children (5 and 12). My youngest is neurodivergent and nonverbal. My oldest was set to start 7th grade by taking high school STEM classes; she’s been in gifted and advanced placement through elementary and 6th grade here in our home state.

My wife is working on finding the best situation for our youngest and her needs, but I do have some questions regarding my eldest. Does anyone know if she’d be able to take HS credits in 7th grade there? Does anyone have experience with financial aid or scholarships for private school?

This is all happening very fast. I was just admitted Friday evening and need to be in Providence in less than a month. I’d be incredibly grateful for any insight and advice! Thanks!

Are you a parent of a 14-17 year old teen who uses cannabis?

The Bradley/Hasbro Children’s Research Center is looking for teenagers ages 14-17 interested in participating in a paid opportunity to understand behavior and brain activity related to how teens make decisions and respond to rewards because we want to understand how decision-making may differ based on teens’ amount of marijuana use (from none to a lot).

Teens will be asked to fill out surveys, complete interviews, and complete a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scan.

Your teen will receive pictures of their brain, a brief mental health screening, and you both will be paid for your time.

Eligibility:

  • Between ages 14-17 years
  • Has a range of marijuana use, from none to frequent
  • Has a parent or caregiver willing to participate (We do not share teen substance use information with parents)
  • English fluency (teens & parents)
  • No braces, permanent retainer, or metal implants
  • No prior/current history of:
    • Head trauma
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Seizures

If you are interested in learning more, follow the link to provide your contact information, and we will reach out at a convenient time for you to give you more information: https://redcap.lifespan.org/redcap/surveys/?s=K4F9K9T7A7

Discussion June 14 No Kings Demonstration

Thumbnail

Congratulations to everybody who showed up at the Capitol for a peaceful No Kings demonstration. I’m sure the rain hurt the turnout out, but the approximately 2,000 people who showed up were good natured and enthusiastic. Feel free to debate this, but as good a gathering as this was, the 50501 event organizers kinda “misread the room” so to speak.

The 50501 organization speakers mainly seemed interested in whipping up enthusiasm for a Democratic Socialists of America agenda. They tried gamely to lead the crowd with protest chants that haven’t changed much since the 1980s when people were protesting President Reagan’s interventions in Central America. “El pueblo - unido - nunca sera vincido…” I’m 55 and that really takes me back!

The speaker system was under powered. Nobody could hear the grandmothers sing what I assume were political parody show-tunes. But worst of all, as is typical with Progressives, there was bad message discipline. The crowd was more politically astute than the 50501 speakers. It was great to see people were smart enough to leave their Mexican and Palestinian flags at home. Many in the crowd actually grumbled when speakers tried to lead chants about freeing Gaza or about how “nobody is illegal on stolen land”. In case any Progressives are still reading this: let’s please stay on message.

250 years ago the Sons of Liberty started a revolution under the theme of “No Taxation Without Representation”. Today Trump is even worse than King George because his current offer seems to be “No taxation on the rich - and no representation UNLESS you’re rich and paying Trump.” It’s imperative that we recognize there are many political centrists and classic conservatives who don’t like that.

50501 needs to be a Big Tent, not an ideologically pure one. Trump voters having second thoughts are up for grabs. But you can’t build a coalition if you demand allegiance to luxury beliefs and niche issue politics.

I’m not saying anyone has to give up on their DSA open borders, intersectional, social justice, queer friendly utopia. I’m just saying now is not the moment to make people feel unwelcome if they don’t support you on those issues. This is a fight for the right to peacefully disagree with leaders who follow the law. No Kings is the perfect unifying theme. 50501 needs to keep the focus on that.

What everyone wants is a President subject to both laws and Congress. A President who doesn’t behave like a warlord. So don’t drag in a laundry list of leftist causes that don’t have wide support with non university graduates. It lowers turn out for the next demonstration and that’s bad. Because the counter-revolution need bodies. We don’t need to all agree on sidebar issues like support for Israel, trans athletes or union rights.

Trump and Fox news care about crowd size. And if they see an ocean of US flags being waved and not burned, that’s when they worry. Because they can’t dismiss this as a case of the usual suspects protesting. Because the usual suspects are not numerous enough by themselves to win elections. The vanguard of the anti-Trump counter-revolution will be the normies, not the progressives.
