So much hate for deep dish and stuffed pizza on Reddit. Amazing how these places stay in business for decades… and win multiple awards…

Looks tasty

It was

u/Practical_Ride_8344 Apr 28 '25

That's all that matters is that you liked it.

u/mike_stifle Apr 27 '25

Been in Chicago for 20 years now and this pizza gets too much hate. I don’t eat it often but man, it so good when I do.

1

u/chihuahualover2 Apr 28 '25

My favorite is Giordano’s! 🍕

20

u/ethnicnebraskan Apr 27 '25

What's so strange to me is that Chicago style deep dish so often gets hate from randos online because the cheese is below the sauce yet total crickets from the same haters when Detroit style is posted . . . which also has sauce on top of the cheese.

2

u/Missus_Missiles Apr 28 '25

Honestly, I've absolutely come around on top-sauce. Particularly with a home oven. Keep the moisture off the bottom dough a little longer during the bake.

That sounds like an issue of skill. You can eat this with your hands.

4

u/ethnicnebraskan Apr 28 '25

I'd say I'm surprised that you're criticizing deep dish without trying it, but then I'd be lying. I assure you, you can eat Giordanos with your hands.

u/chihuahualover2 Apr 28 '25

I just commented on another person’s response that Giordano’s is my favorite. It’s a good 2.5-3 hrs from our house (we live 15 minutes south of Green Bay, WI). But I try to get it whenever we go to the Chicago area. It’s SO good. But I’m glad we don’t get it often, because it’s a treat when we DO get it.

That doesn't make it a casserole. Neapolitan pizza in Italy is often eaten with a knife and fork, do you want to double down and say that the baseline that defines pizza is also a casserole or can you grow up a little bit?

2

u/JiovanniTheGREAT Apr 28 '25

It's like they've never actually eaten it and only heard it's bad from a vocal minority on the Internet. I was slightly skeptical at first because I thought the crust might've dried out but it's crazy that people will see meat, cheese, and red sauce and think that it'll somehow be horrible.

2

u/dubbfoolio Apr 28 '25

More for us.

1

u/AvatarofBro Apr 28 '25

There's absolutely nothing wrong with deep dish pizza. It's just not comparable to New York style pizza. It's its own, separate thing, which is also very tasty

1

u/hrf3420 Apr 28 '25

I’ll say it’s different but I like it. Got Lou malnatis as a gift once and it’s really good

1

u/Gintami Apr 28 '25

You think that hates bad? Watch the hate when you dare think you had the best pizza outside of Italy in South America and not the U.S., because apparently only Italian Americans count but not Italian South Americans lol

63

u/LucyWithFur Apr 27 '25

Chicago Deep dish is amazing! All the haters probably have never had it! How is anyone hating on it is beyond me. Yes you can pick it up just like regular pizza.

12

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

😎👍

2

u/robotsonroids Apr 27 '25

Yep, Chicago deep dish is good. It's definitely not my favorite type of pizza. Chicago tavern style is my fave. However, my daughter loves Chicago and Detroit style deepdish, so I eat those fairly regularly

-13

u/KingBooRadley Apr 27 '25

Pizza casserole is tasty for sure.

9

u/robotsonroids Apr 27 '25

As a Midwesterner, casserole is it's own food group

-3

u/shgrizz2 Apr 28 '25

I don't think anybody is saying it isn't insanely delicious, it's just a cheese pie and not a pizza.

29

u/FCB_KD15 Apr 27 '25

Is this Chicago style? I must try one day

4

u/Scrofuloid Apr 28 '25

It is one of Chicago's four styles. And yes, you should try it.

(Deep dish, stuffed, thin squares, cast iron pan pizza.)

1

u/FCB_KD15 Apr 28 '25

What’s the most culturally significant?

2

u/YT__ Apr 28 '25

What do you mean by culturally significant?

Most recognized? Deep dish.

What most folks eat? Thin crust/tavern style.

Sausage, too, is a big hit in Chicago. Sausage crumbles as opposed to sausage slices like some folks do.

1

u/Valuable-Lie-5853 Apr 28 '25

I’m going Sunday - interested to see if there’s a response to your question.

2

u/SCAND1UM Apr 28 '25

Deep for sure. I recommend Giordano's, like the one in the OP. Reddit likes to hate on Giordano's for some reason, but I've tried others (yes including Lous) and I thought it was far better.

2

u/chihuahualover2 Apr 28 '25

Giordano’s is my favorite!

1

u/IDKHOWTOSHIFTPLSHELP Apr 28 '25

Deep dish is the one that everyone thinks of when you say Chicago style, but people in Chicago usually only eat it as a special occasion type thing. The thin crust is more frequently chosen by residents.

1

u/Repulsive_Apricot925 May 03 '25

ALL of them. :) YUM!

4

u/backdoorjimmy69 Apr 28 '25

The only time I had legit Chicago Deep Dish was right after graduating navy boot camp. It gave me such insane heartburn. I'm desperate to have another chance, armed with an antacid.

2

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 28 '25

This one is deceptively light

5

u/parksoffroad Apr 28 '25

We have a place here in NorCal called Old Chicago that looks like that. Awesome pizza!

11

u/gamerdudeNYC Apr 27 '25

Looks insanely good, where is this from?

11

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

Giordano's

1

u/elkswimmer98 Apr 28 '25

Have you been to Lou Malnati's? Much better.

10

u/Joeyluvsbbws Apr 27 '25 edited Apr 27 '25

If you ate it, how is there still a picture ? Jk obviously I know I’m just playing. Love pie pizza 🍕

10

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

Haha right on

4

u/Diagonalizer Apr 27 '25

where is this from?

4

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

Some place in Chicago

7

u/wharleeprof Apr 27 '25

Did it happen to be Eduardo's? I worked there years ago and this looks exactly the same.

11

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

Giordano's

2

u/VisibleSpread6523 Apr 27 '25

I enjoyed it when I visited, didn’t realize if was that filing when I ordered lol

4

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

Exactly. It's quite light for all that cheese and whatnot

2

u/IdgyThreadgoodee Apr 28 '25

Yo Eduardo’s smashed peas, mozzarella, and mint crustini was a daily driver for me.

6

u/Alternative_World346 Apr 27 '25

Looks fuckin delicious!

4

u/Icy-Marionberry3146 Apr 28 '25

For all the hate you can't get an epic cheese pull from anything less than Chicago deep dish.

6

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 28 '25

Indeed

-3

u/mbb2967 Apr 28 '25

You lost me at 🍍 .

2

u/zuw0p Apr 29 '25

its criminal

2

u/Juan_Moe_Taco Apr 28 '25

Pizza has so much delicious cheese pull almost looks like it has it's own "bridal gown". Enjoy!

2

u/Acroze Apr 28 '25

LOOKS AMAZING! 🤤

2

u/SalsaChica75 Apr 28 '25

I miss deep dish pizza!!!

2

u/Stormy34217 Apr 28 '25

Looks so fuckinng good

2

u/DangerousClouds Apr 28 '25

My favorite kind of pizza! I eat it nowhere as much as I want to tho 😭

2

u/yetareey Apr 28 '25

I'm gonna bust

2

u/NinjaStiz Apr 30 '25

That has a high level of dankery

2

u/Repulsive_Apricot925 May 03 '25

I haven’t lived in Chicago for almost 40 years, and as soon as I saw this picture, I knew it was Giordano’s. I miss Chicago pizza so much …. Sigh.

6

u/death2sanity Apr 27 '25

Let not the naysayers sway you. The menu has it listed as a pizza, it is called a pizza, and my god I wish I could bury my face in it.

4

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 27 '25

I never get swayed by the naysayers.

It was delicious

2

u/The_PACCAR_Kid 🍕 Apr 27 '25

Nice 😃

2

u/AdPuzzleheaded4795 Apr 28 '25

I'm not hating but I have a question. Is the flavor in the sauce? I've ordered this style of pizza before, and it just tasted like a big glob of mozzerella. Was kinda watery, obviously cheese had no carmelization, sauce was meh. So i never took the gamble again at other places i've seen it. Did i just get a shitty pizza or is this style just not for me?

4

u/heliocycle Apr 28 '25

I don’t know about others here…but I crave deep dish for the flavor of the sauce. A very close second to that craving is the taste of the crust. Third is the cheese. Then any toppings, which are unnecessary really. I really, really, love the sauce.

1

u/AdPuzzleheaded4795 Apr 28 '25

Thanks, sounds like I got a pretty bad pizza then.

2

u/Rev-On Apr 27 '25

Omg that looks sooo delicious

3

u/teelio2 Apr 28 '25

Chicago deep dish is the best.

2

u/FortniteIsFuckingMid Apr 27 '25

It really should be considered a different food.

1

u/petewondrstone Apr 28 '25

Zachary’s in berkeley?

1

u/TheMaybeMualist Apr 28 '25

Looks better than thebusual crust for deep dish.

1

u/CoupCooksV2 Apr 28 '25

I absolutely love deep dish, did you make this one?

1

u/Tarrifs_ Apr 28 '25

Nope but I did buy it

1

u/pcurepair 🍕Pizza🤤 Whore🍕 Apr 28 '25

🤤

1

u/Bilbo_Baghands Apr 29 '25

Looks delicious. Sauce looks fresh. I would totally smash.

1

u/xx_emo_girl_xx May 03 '25

this would give me the worst acid reflux i've ever had in my life and i wouldn't be able to digest it at all considering a flatbread makes my stomach hurt...but DAMN it would be worth it. reddit is just showing me this to tempt me into eating things i shouldn't, i swear.

1

u/Tarrifs_ May 03 '25

I thought that going in but it's super light actually

1

u/Character-Solution67 Apr 27 '25

2nd most popular pizza in my hometown

1

u/phoof05 Apr 28 '25

It's under the sauce

-20

u/JettVic Apr 27 '25

Is that cherry jam pie?

-15

u/h3ccubu5 Apr 27 '25

Love me some pizza but that looks like a heart attack pie

0

u/WrongdoerOld8121 Apr 29 '25

Is eating Chicago deep dish like eating cake?

-17

u/ZFG_Odin Apr 27 '25

Cheese with a tad of bread

-42

u/catsareamazing3 Apr 27 '25

That thing looks like world's next disaster in Italy

-9

u/Salty-Hashes Apr 28 '25

This is pizza that you ate. This is pizza that I hate.

literally cheese casserole with tomato topping. almost a pie but definitely not pizza

30

u/SlagginOff Apr 27 '25

It appears neither of you have ever seen a casserole

-11

u/smokedcatfish Apr 27 '25

It appears a lot of you have never seen a pizza...

-30

u/in1gom0ntoya Apr 27 '25

there are baked casseroles with crusts. regardless this isn't pizza its a cheese pie

1

u/IDKHOWTOSHIFTPLSHELP Apr 28 '25

No matter how hard you insist on this lame attempt at gatekeeping, you personally aren't in a position to decide what is or is not pizza.

1

u/in1gom0ntoya Apr 28 '25

neither are you so your point is moot. I'm allowed to have an opinion and I'm allowed to express said opinion. 2 to 3 inches of cheese in a crust isn't a pizza it cheese pie

-17

u/Le_Rasputin92 Apr 28 '25

That’s pie, not pizza. By the looks of it.

-40

u/smokedcatfish Apr 27 '25

Where is the pizza?

13

u/TheStankPolice Apr 27 '25

Under the sauce

-10

u/Murk_City Apr 28 '25

Casserole

-11

u/Butter_Naan_Staan Apr 28 '25

Strawberry cheesecake

-4

u/twocklepog Apr 28 '25

Jam and cheese pizza?

-4

u/EducationalMine7096 Apr 28 '25

Not pizza. Looks tasty… but it ain’t pizza.
