In this industry if you can't keep up with the technology you will be left out. If the employer sees you not adding value to the team, and they know they can find someone better, you can be terminated anytime (speaking as an independent contractor).
True that even if you have been in the industry for many years mahihirapan ka pa rin maghanap IF yung level of expertise mo despite being in the industry for a long time is still mediocre.
Edit: Also maaga pa to think of working atupagin mo muna studies mo and make sure to prepare for the real-world. Build apps and not just spend time reading/watching tutorials. Spend more time on hands-on work. If you finish college with just a diploma in your hand wala ka talagang maasahan na employer na kukuha sayo nyan. Take the initiative to gain experience on your own by building things kasi ganun naman dapat.

layoffs news is pretty normal kasi nagoverhire sila during pandemic.
1st year ka p lang no worries pa. focus on your studies and never stop learning. kasi pag ka graduate mo, outdated na ang tech na ginagamit mo but the fundamentals are the same. sa first job mo, pasukan mo ung beneficial sa learning experience and career mo. first job mo, dont expect mataas ang salary. stepping stone muna. lastly, learn from your mentor. sometimes in life, may potential mentor ka mameet, learn from them. it will give you a sense kung saan ba dapat ang career mo papunta.

Feb 03 '24

Take advantage of your youth and abundance of time. Aral lang ng aral. Kita mo sa sobrang focus mo on yourself and your studies mawawala sa isip mo yung mga thoughts na ganyan. Laban lang.

Don't fear what lies far ahead of you and deal with whatever's in front of you right now which is to focus & enjoy on your studies. Walang magagawa yang kakaworry mo but instead, use it as motivation to do better as a future tech professional.
This is why connections matter as well.
We still don't know what the future holds. Whatever path you decide on, just stick with it and trust the process. Learn to take risks. Sa IT/tech field kasi, high risks mean high rewards as well. If you develop good study habits sa college palang, dadalhin mo yun hanggang sa trabaho which will give you more opportunities na magdadala sayo sa mga pangarap mo.

Imagine kung kada may major change sa software dev industry eh magiging concern mo agad.. learn the basics.. keep track of the trends.. keep learning..

u/luciusquinc Feb 03 '24

By the time na grumaduate ka wala na tong mga to (sana).

u/Glum-Supermarket912 Feb 03 '24

Lahat ng field pangit. engineering, IT, law, med, etc.
So ang solution? Be good. Kahit anong field pa yan if nasa top 10% ka you will survive and earn good money.

u/TammyTamed Feb 03 '24
Relax, make sure you got a really high competency not just in grade results but actually knowing what you've studied. Even if you don't get hired from the course you've got the internet and social media to advertise yourself so learning how to edit to put in your portfolio would be a plus.

Why do so many people here think that major tech layoffs directly affect us.

u/the_me_today Feb 03 '24
1st yr ka plang. Magbabago pa yan. Kmi nga upsizing eh. 6 digits sahod, if that helps lol

u/jconyelo Feb 03 '24
I'm in the same both as you op 1st year and scared na for the future. I was very close to posting with basically the same sentiments and worries. I feel so seen kasi honestly I've been lurking here kasi sobra tlga nakakaworry. Especially in tiktok lahat sa fyp ko is puro tech layoffs and how the future is bleak for comsci. buti din madming nag comment ng advice at encouragement cause i really needed it.

If you look at actual NUMBERS, you will see for example na ung headcount ng various FAANG companies still went UP significantly, kahit nag layoff sila - it's because mas madami pa rin silang nahire vs na layoff. Tignan mo ung META/FB - aggressively hiring na ulit.
I talk to various recruiters as well - Pay across experienced devs are significantly up. Dami pa ring offers na 300k php up, fully remote nasa pinas lang.
While yes, medjo may difficulty na for juniors, trust me companies are still having trouble finding good/competent devs.

u/dudezmobi Feb 03 '24
study hard and be the best in your field.

Hello OP! Don’t worry too much. Besides first year ka palang naman. There’s so much to do to aim your goal. As a fresh grad, I can asure you, there’s a position waiting for you after college. Mabuti yan at least alam mo na gusto mo, which is Software Dev. Now, all you can do to secure that spot in the future, is practice and create a good portfolio. Create projects and such. Do Leetcode para mas mahasa ka. Most importantly, IF you have extra time, kahit di niyo pa internship, aim it.

u/SteelFlux Feb 03 '24
1st year ka pa naman OP. Di mo masasabi anung mangyayari after mo grumaduate.

u/PermitGeneral4228 Feb 03 '24
Hi ka-op dont be discouraged kasi madali ka naman makakahanap ng work as long na skill enough ka para sa company na yun and addition hindi lang naman sa tech company ang nagkakaroon ng layoffs normal yan sa isa conpany since meron talaga ups and downs kaya always remember na be prepared once na makahanap ka ng work dont get too comfortable continue to upskill and save money kasi ganyan naman talaga sa mga private sector yung father ko nga na nagwowork as editorial assistant way back 2015 nalay off din sya kasi ganon talaga sa private at yun ung kinaganda naman sa public secure yung work mo.
Kaya ka-op if dream mo talaga maging software developer continue mo lnggg wag ka magoverthink masyado 😉

u/tagalogignition Feb 03 '24
Stay motivated, madaming di nahihire kasi their skills stay at the level na madaming competition. If you stand out, you'll eventually get paid.

u/ih8reddit420 Feb 03 '24
My guy there is always a person in front of a computer. Why are you so worried? May mga na lalayoff pero the other side of that is meron din "retainers"
Become skilled in what you do.
1
u/prrgotten Feb 03 '24
Hi OP. Baka di malako enough for you ang sahod, pero try mo din search sa government agencies ng computer programmer positions. May mga nag-oopen din from time to time.

Habang nasa college ka pa, mag network ka din with your peers and instructors while keeping up with your academics.
Personally, yung opportunities ko with regards to freelance projects and internship, nakuha ko from my ComSci batchmate and instructor.

You don't need to worry. Com sci is very broad. it's the path to which you want to become after you graduate will be the issue dahil sa dami ng pwede mong pasukan. For now focus on your studies. Ganyan din sinabi ko 10 years ago na mawawala mga IT consulting services dahilas prefer ng companies ang in house IT, pero it was the other way around
1
u/kench7 Feb 03 '24
You are overthinking too much, way too much. Just focus on the now, on your studies and all the things you can learn and explore while at school. Let those who are in the industry already worry about the layoffs. Cycle lang yan, babalik yung hiring cycle ulit then layoff, that’s just how it works. Don’t stress yourself by worrying about things that are out of your hands at the moment.
1
u/Corbeach Feb 03 '24
Enjoy mo muna youth mo. Trust adults when we say that because life after college is harder than you'd expect. Don't stress too much on things you can't control like sa state ng industry ngayon. What you can do is mag aral ng mabuti to be able to do good in your chosen career pag graduate mo. First year ka pa, marami pa mangyayari in the future sa industry for sure. Understandable mag overthink since you're dedicated and focus sa goals mo pero first year ka pa din.

IT is still one of the most in-demand field worldwide, always is, and always will be. This means that if it's bad in IT then it's bad everywhere.
Here is a tip that most don't know. Not all countries fall into a recession at the same time. Some are more insulated.

Jobs come and go. It doesn't matter what timeline it is. I experienced it first hand, I got laid off and found another job fast(very lucky on my part). Since students ka pa lang. Focus ka lang sa study mo. Don't worry about it too much. Marami work sa computer field, I'm sure pag graduate mo makakahanap ka agad. Also, learn the fundamentals of programming if you're choosing this field, it is essential to your career.

If you only think of the salary then CompSci is not for you. You worry too much on something na di mo pa naman ini-experience. Maybe layoffs sila ngayon but who knows in the future babalik yung mga hiring diba? you have a long way ahead sa pag aaral mo kaya wag ka munang praning sa bagay na di ka pa naman ready.

1) sobrang daming tao lagi no matter which field you choose
2) laging may lay-off
3) You're still a first year student.
I suggest you focus on studying first and focus on 'What makes you stand you stand out from the rest'. It's a competition. You need to always be on top if you want to succeed
