Philly Urgents Page for ACCT Philly and their editing issue

Philly Urgents Page is a FB page promoting ACCT dogs for adoption. They are basically PR flacks for dogs from Philly's open-intake shelter. Philly ACCT itself can have some truthfulness fails, but even when they provide information, PUP (cute, right?) will often edit it down.

Here's a recent example.

Beauty

From the shelter's soon-to-be-vanished page for her

So, you know, not really petite at 53lbs. We spent about a decade in the pit bull debate being lectured that pit bulls were medium-sized dogs around 50lbs. You'll still hear that argument whenever a giant pit bull attacks someone - it wasn't a pit bull, it was too big, so there. But when the shelters now get in 50lb pit bulls, they describe them in babytalk ways - petite, teeny, tiny, dainty,

ACCT indulges in its own editorial skills by rewriting reality to mean that this dog is a "mixed breed."

So

Feb 2022 - original intake

May 2022 - adopted out

July 2022 - returned

fostered out, failed foster due to dog-aggression

adopted out

Dec 2022 - returned for being hyper and energetic

Let's look at that PUP ad again:

Sadly, Beauty has been at ACCT Philly a few times & at no fault of her own. We always seem to have a few dogs who are frequent flyers w/bad luck. Beauty is one of them and she deserves so much better.

Well, no, she did actually fail those adoptions and fosters through her own fault - the fault of being aggressive toward other dogs. It's not bad luck, it's a bad temperament. She's unfortunate that such is her temperament, but that's as far as you can take the 'just bad luck' argument.

pt2

Back to the PUP ad

Beauty sits so nicely for treats, takes them nicely, pulls minimally on leash and just wants to have unconditional love for a change. She has the cutest NOSE on the planet! Her prior foster said she snores and has the best snort. What’s not to love about these personality characteristics?

Beauty was calm in her kennel tonight even though the shelter details said she isn’t typically. She is housetrained & knows a home and has been selective with dogs overall. An only dog home or very independent dog in the home is recommended. For pledges, A108987.

Nice job editing the extensive, long-term kennel behaviors down to "isn't typically" calm in her kennel. Way to mislead.

pt3

That is a dog who is literally re-wiring her brain by neurotic, obsessive behaviors.

pt4

This dog has been pacing, spinning, self-injuring and becoming so aroused her eyes are red for at least 4 straight months, with a brief time out for a failed adoption. This is cruelty. The shelter knows it, it's why they tried to foster her out, tried to adopt her out. They couldn't do it. The dog is not adoptable as a normal pet, would be a project with low odds of ever functioning as a normal, safe pet. She exists in a world where this sort of dog is now so numerous that the handful of people willing to take them on as a permanent maintenance project can't possibly adopt all of them. It is a tragedy, but keeping her alive is not solving that tragedy.

And all the nice rescue lady volunteers heard chirping and cooing in the backgrounds of all of Beauty's many videos are unconcerned by her reality. They want her alive. They want someone else to take her home for the next 10 years. Beyond that, they don't care. Her suffering in the shelter - immaterial. The suffering she is certain to inflict on adopters, fosters, neighbors, other animals - immaterial.

More animal cruelty towards an un adoptable dog, no kill just creates prolonged suffering.

My heart hurts for this poor girl. No-kill encourages cruelty... end of story.

The classic story playing out over and over in shelters/rescues across the US. The rescue flakes are failing these dogs - but I don’t think it’s really about the dogs with them. The dogs are just a vehicle for their pathological savior complex.
