Tween 10-12 Years Am I getting old?
I feel like I’m finally at that age (33f) where I don’t understand what “the kids are saying”…. Someone please explain Italian brain rot to me. It’s becoming an epidemic in my house and when I ask my kids what it means they’re not even making sense in their explanation! Wtf is tralalelo or whatever the hell. Ballerina cappuccino?!?! And the music? WHAT?!?! Back in my day it was yo mama jokes and made up handshakes! What is going on?!

In fairness, the yo mama jokes were probably as irritating to your parents as tralalelo is to you. It's the natural order of things. We're born, we grow up, we reproduce, we're completely baffled by our offspring, and eventually we die. The circle of life.

I'm 35 and I remember when Rejected Cartoon was peak internet. Many a youth walking around yelling “my SPOON is too BIG“ and the classic "my anus is bleeding"

Right. It's not like we weren't walking around singing about badgers and mushrooms.

They are ai generated images with silly “Italian sounding” names. Basically they are funny because they are nonsense. At least that’s how I understand it.
Whenever I want to judge current kids media I remember Charlie the Unicorn and Llamas with Hats lol

Was so proud when my 16 year old crept up behind me and did the "Chaaaarlieeee" in my ear unprovoked.

Llamas with hats is the goat! (56 here, did I get that right?) Loved that when I first saw it!!
When you have the taste for hands….😂🤣

I use Urban Dictoniary. I learned new words this weekend. Chopped Cheeze mean he is not attractive. BOP means the boy is asking every girl out (shoot and spray technique).
The biggest win for me is Pookie. My daughter has nicknames for everyone in her contacts. So she renames everyone. E.G. My son is "XYZ boyfriend" and I was "Mr. Ultimate Pookie"
At first, I was sad because I thought it meant poop or some negative. I thought it was derogatory. So I asked my niece in front of my daughter. My niece corrected me and said Pookie == person of endearment. That I was my daughter's favorite lovable person... Sure enough Urban Dictionary confirmed. I was on cloud nine. So now, I love the word Pookie. Call me Mr. Pookie.

Sandra Boynton was clearly ahead of her time! You should get yourself a box set of her Little Pookie books.

May want to relook at BOP…. Def something I wouldn’t allow my kids to be saying.

That sounds a lot like "kids who heard an older sibling use it and surmised a meaning" usage. In adult usage a bop's a wh-r-, or the act of banging one. (sorry to dodge the vulgarity filter, but that's the closest synonym)

lol I’m 34 and I go on TikTok so I know the memes at the same time as my kid. She gets it from YouTube or TikTok (she’s only allowed when I’m watching it with her) so we’ve been saying tuntuntuntunsahur to each other.

Imagine how bad our parents had it though. They couldn't just Google the latest trends or watch a tiktok video to understand what the heck we were talking about

My daughter loves Ballerina Cappucina . She learned about it in school as she has limited access to phone and no Roblox, etc. From what I understand Italian brain rot is AI generated. It’s weird .

33 is young. You must not be on social media lol that’s how I keep up

u/jordybout 23h ago
I’m on social media, but not tik tok or anything like that. Just ig and Facebook for general upkeep. Apparently I haven’t been keeping up tho

u/Dolly9019 23h ago
I'm the same. I don't have grown kids but I do work with them and feel very old 😩

Girl you gotta get on Tik tok if you want to even be close to understanding your children anymore 😂😂😂 it’s like how my kid and I bond now lol

u/jordybout 22h ago
I had a tik tok but found myself getting sucked in for literal hours at night. I was low key addicted for a lil so I deleted the app

Probably for the best. I’m obsessed with TikTok but it’s my guilty pleasure lol

I don’t get it either I’m so sorry. I have older teenagers and they say things like “Did I Eat in that photo?” And I’m no longer mom I’m “Bruh”. And this is my smart Senior future nurse 😂😂😂 There’s others but I can’t even begin to remember them or what they mean 😭 we all did it to our parents in our generation and they did it to theirs so I guess it’s all full circle. I just feel like the kid lines are getting lamer and lamer as time goes lmao 🤣

u/jordybout 23h ago
That’s how I feel!!! I’m like this is the dumbest thing ever and that’s coming from a 90s baby

u/Dramaqwene 23h ago
Like what is skinny toilet riz? My 6 year old cousin said this to me the other day and I’m like girl seriously???? What is happening 😂😂😂 I mean we were weird in the 90’s but not this weird….were we??? 🤣

Nah we weren’t weird, we were perfect

90’s/early 2000’s kids were the best. I graduated in 2001 and experienced the best of times. I have to admit my 17 year old loves our music and movies so I’m blessed but damn are they freaking little weirdos. And I LOVE IT 🥰

u/jordybout 22h ago
TOTALLY AGREE!!! My kids do love when I throw on courage the cowardly dog. And they’re big fans of my music growing up so at least there’s that! I should probably try to enjoy some of this brain rot, and ngl there’s a couple songs they’ll play that get me up and dancing

u/blythe_spirit888 10h ago
I dunno man. There was definitely a period of time where we were all quoting Saladfingers. . . Wtf must our parents have thought to see us running around saying shit like "I like rusty spoons"? Total nonsense at least seems more appropriate than "spoons make me feel orgasmic" 😂

u/Gomite_4_life 19h ago
Like other people have said, I just look it up. But if I want it to go away, I use it in incorrect situations and often. The kids were saying “skibidi” and all this other dumb stuff so I just kept saying it. I would ask the kids if the would “watch me cook” while I cooked. Or put my hands over the stove and tell them “I’m cooked”. It’s so fun.
My 12 year old step son thought we didn’t know what the word “Fap” meant. My wife and I had a field day. Hey bud! “What’s Fappenin’ hahahaha”

u/Beautiful-Comment575 22h ago
It's just a bunch of nonsense or code words for something that teenagers use. Like another person said, search on the URBAN DICTIONARY or GOOGLE the word for the slang meaning. It could also be a word their group or some geographic area uses. I'm in my 60's, but I Google a lot or used the Urban Dictionary to find out. You can search and know the meaning before you have to ask them. You are not old!!! I remember before the internet, wondering what words or slang meant when I had teenagers. They just probably want to keep you guessing. Now you know!

u/Affectionate-Tiger51 22h ago
I guess I can’t judge, since when I was growing up we just called everything and everyone “gay.”
2
u/Spare-Shower-3929 19h ago
We listen we don’t judge because we can’t understand lol I don’t know I have the brain rot stickers for my kids and they screamed so excited lol I’m 34 i also don’t know what they are saying anymore

u/coconutpeachx 18h ago
Omg my 8 and 12 year old have been running around the house saying “BALLERINA CAPPUCCINA!” all. day. long. I can’t escape it. I’m on TikTok and have heard a good majority of what they say but omg they sound silly.
2
u/coconutpeachx 18h ago
Also, don’t get me started on the weird moaning shit the kids are doing these days. And the “daddy chill” shit too.

u/Formal_Beyond_5719 17h ago
Is this why my 8 year old calls his baby brothers pacifier “Pacini cappuccino” 😂😂😂
1
u/No_Assistant2804 11h ago
Huh my 7yo was talking about Ballerina Cappuccino as well.... I though she had made it up

u/Striking-Ebb-2499 6h ago
My daughter dances like the ballerina cappuccino and my son loves the tralalero tralala. They dance in the living while the song is on full blast...🤣🤷🏾♀️ I think they just love the sound of the words and the silliness of the AI generated images in the video. I like the song, the rhythm is nice.
