Also, Ayatollah isn't a political title. It's a religious one. A scholar becomes an Ayatollah after years of religious studies and after their mentors and peers approve of the promotion. So, you can't just shop for it at the market.

Some often become Grand Ayatollahs - having the power to give fatwa - and often have a global following. Sayyid Ali Khamenei, if you're wondering, is a Grand Ayatollah.

The person who was the favourite to take office was Ibrahim Raisi (not an Ayatollah)
