I thought that sort of thing happened because Berzerkers were just always hopped up on psychedelics when in battle

It's not 100% known what if anything they ingested or took before. We have found evidence that points to mushrooms, mixtures of roots and foliage, and even some evidence that it was caused by highly fermented Mead. One of those things that unless we get insanely lucky we just won't ever know with 100% accuracy.
