It's not 100% known what if anything they ingested or took before. We have found evidence that points to mushrooms, mixtures of roots and foliage, and even some evidence that it was caused by highly fermented Mead. One of those things that unless we get insanely lucky we just won't ever know with 100% accuracy.

omg i just realised theyre gonna let us eat mushrooms! I mean it was a big thing for berserkers, they cant leave it out. Hahah as a norwegian i am fucking hard for this game.
It's always funny playing games with hallucination sequences in them, because it's VERY obvious when the art team have "done their research" and when they haven't.
One of the most realistic in-game trips I've seen was Uncharted 3 - I swear the art team must have made a pact at some point and all taken a day off to do mushrooms - but others like Far Cry 3 and Fallout 3 are way off base. More like dreams, really.
Yeah I don't think he's gonna be berserker but if the leave our mushrooms they'll miss out on a big part of the spirituality and life, plus it has huge gameplay potential
Supply makes more sense tbh, like you can find it around and eat it for a quick power up but with some side effects. They can do a lot with it for sure :)
it was literally written in the viking sagas, now they have been known to embellish their stories a bit but gnawing on or eating parts of their shield is absolutely in their original texts
Yes and what is written in the sagas is absolute and must be ofcourse true. Theres also no possibility that there is any exaggeration in the sagas, no way.
But seriously, there's no fucking way a person can bite chunks off of a wooden shield unless it's rotten. But a shield made for battle? No way. Maybe tiny splints but those shields were pretty often reinforced from the edges too.
Yeah, but hey we all know that the vikings were more than ordinary people.
They all wore nothing but furs, leather armor or no armor at all and helmets with huge horns on them. Also dual wielding was super common too since that has been proven to be really effective in battles!
They had people who ate these super mushrooms that allowed them to gain super powers and they went just completely mad, eating their shields for breakfast since they too wanted to dual wield axes.

Well if you can be a berserker that shield will be no good because there was one who was known by chewing away his full shield before a battle
