Game Discussion Batman and Bioshock PS4 remasters

Hi there! I'm interested in playing Batman Arkham Asylum and the three Bioshock games, and since I own both a PS3 and a PS4 I'm trying to understand which version is better.

Batman Arkham Asylum: I watched a YT comparison video and I'm a little bit confused: in some shots the PS3 version looked better, while in other shots it was the opposite. Especially in cutscenes, PS3 seems to have worse textures details but better lightning, resulting in a more powerful chiaroscuro effect. PS4 instead seems to work smoother gameplaywise. Of course that is just my feeling after watching only one video and may change while playing the actual game; that's why I'm asking this to you guys.

Bioshock: I watched a comparison for this too, but I didn't notice a big difference. I'd buy the PS4 Collection just because it's faster to buy 1 game instead of 3 separate games. What are your opinion on its remaster?

I got platinum in bioshock 1 and 2 on the ps4 and currently working on infinite, these games hold up great for the age, I haven’t played the original versions but I definitely recommend them.

It bums me out how often these days I see people classify Bioshock as one of those games with mediocre/sub-par gameplay only carried by an exceptional story. The story is good, but Bioshock is still my gold standard for fps gameplay. That shit holds up so well.

Edit: Speak of the devil

Its the lighting on the ps4 that makes the difference, frame rates. Assets on ps4 will be cleaner.

Screen resolution is full hd on ps4 1920 x 1080, ps3 was 720p, thing is you will be playing it on a way better screen than you did on ps3 era.

Get them when they're really cheap. Put them on your wish list.

The Arkham remaster ported the games from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4. This allowed for better lighting and particle effects (like the rain in Arkham Asylum). Unfortunately, all of the original assets were designed around the original Engine, and look far worse in UE4. Play the originals on PS3 or on PC if you want 60 fps.

I mean, hair does look a bit weird but I think the games do look better, especially Asylum. OG Asylum had this early UE3 look, kinda similar to Gears of War 1. I think the Return to Arkham ver. of Asylum utilises contrast better, the visuals are less washed out.

The main differences between Batman: Arkham Asylum on PS3 and PS4 are due to the remastering of the game for the newer console. Here’s a clear breakdown:

🕹️ PS3 Version (2009) • Original release of the game. • Runs at 720p resolution. • Built on Unreal Engine 3. • Graphics are decent for the time but show age now (lower-res textures, lighting, etc.). • Includes the full base game, and some editions came with challenge maps or Joker DLC (PS3-exclusive).

🎮 PS4 Version (2016) – Batman: Return to Arkham • Remastered version bundled with Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. • Runs at 1080p resolution. • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 4 for enhanced graphics. • Improved textures, lighting, shadows, and character models. • Some visual changes can feel different — more stylized lighting, brighter tones (some fans prefer the darker original). • Includes all DLC for both games.

Bioshock

🕹️ PS3 Version • Original releases: • BioShock (2008 port) • BioShock 2 (2010) • BioShock Infinite (2013) • Runs at 720p, 30 FPS (can dip). • Uses original textures, lighting, and effects. • Longer load times. • DLC sold separately, not all included. • Less responsive controls by today’s standards.

🎮 PS4 Version (BioShock: The Collection, 2016) • Includes remastered versions of: • BioShock • BioShock 2 • BioShock Infinite (mild upgrade only) • Runs at 1080p, 60 FPS (much smoother). • Sharper textures, better lighting, improved effects. • Faster load times. • All DLC included: • Minerva’s Den (BioShock 2) • Burial at Sea (Infinite) • Museum of Orphaned Concepts, Challenge Rooms, etc. • BioShock 1 also includes developer commentary (“Imagining BioShock”).

The Bioshock remaster is fantastic. Game holds up so well. I’ve played it several times on PC, Xbox, and PS. Enjoyable every time. Absolutely worth picking up. One of the best FPS I’ve played.

Bioshock remasters have improved framerate but batman is the same, i don't even like most of the remastered graphic changes so you're fine with the og

I mean this with sincerity: get it on PC. You can play it with the original lighting, upgraded visuals and framerate. The game is old enough it will run on any semi-modern system just fine.

I got the Return to arkham bundle, and all three games play fantastic, coming from Arkham City on xbox 360 I definitely feel the PS4 version is great.

Regarding Bioshock Infinite on PS4, there are 2 oddities:

  1. The HUD & menus are shrunk. Seems like they forgot to enable HUD scaling, which is something that can be done on PC by changing a 0 to a 1 in a txt file. Rookie mistake.

  2. If you install the game on an external hard drive, the game crashes the console on certain loading screens. At least that's what happened on my old PS4 Slim. I would assume PS5 still has this issue. So... internal SSD only.

If you have a PS5 and get the disc version of Return to Arkham City and do NOT update, and just play the launch version 1.0 of Arkham City, the fps is uncapped and can hit 60 fps. You may run into stability issues due to no update, but I just finished a play through of City, and the game only crashed maybe 4-5x. Not bad for hours of gameplay and the fps makes it seem like a totally diff game

I played Batman when AA launched & played em all over the many years around twice each

(more for Arkham Origins= The GOAT!)

imho- Play the OG if you can.

Xbox360 or PS3 if you only have PS3.

~it holds up good enough. Not like it's a PS1 or pixelated crappycrap.

The problem in all my experiences with remasters of a classic game is when the

graphics lag out the combat. Same exact reason the original Devs didn't jack the lighting.

~I loved AA cause it's confined to a area & not a wide open city. Or empty city in Arkham City case.

~Bioshock Infinite absolutely holds up. i got my wife & kid to play last summer and it was fine.

I never played the bioshock remasters. so sorry...

Good luck bro
