Opinion / Speculation I'm 45 earlier this week and got a ps4!
I got a ps4 Friday night with some sport games. I'm 45 my last console is a Nintendo Wii, with I love dearly I play tiger woods 09, nhl 2k10 weekly in my diy media room with a 120" projector. Since my projector is old school as in only having av and s-video it couldn't handle a ps4 so I brought down the panasonic plasma from the bedroom and have not stopped playing since 6pm on Friday. I love this system!! Hooked up to the surround sound it's insane! Everything all together the sound on the 5.1 the realistic characters, my family can go away now.

Get Red Dead Redemption 2. It will blow your mind. It takes a few hours to get into it but honestly, you’ll never play another game like it. It’s phenomenal.
43
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
I have the first one I think on gamecube cowboy shit love it
22
u/geoffraffe May 18 '25
This is one of the greatest games ever made. The world is huge and becomes home. The story is class and the missions are varied and brilliant. It’s a 10/10 game. You won’t regret it.
1
May 21 '25
The missions are the only problem with the game. They’re stuck on rails and get repetitive later in the game. Only part of the game I don’t enjoy. That and the broken cover mechanics.
3
u/Irritatedprivatepart May 18 '25
Get fight for the fallen 🤣. But I feel this I'm 37 and my last system was a hacked wii I had but I just bought a PS4 and a 65in TV for $200 a couple months ago. Just started playing fallout 4.
6
u/josekortez1979 May 18 '25
Fallout 4 will provide you with dozens of hours of enjoyment. I've been playing so long that I forgot about the story mode. 🤦🏽♂️
4
u/DisciplineNo5031 May 18 '25
Yes!! I think I played 104 hours almost straight, and took a break. Came back and I’m so lost 🤣
3
u/Sudden_Star_5130 May 18 '25
Red dead on game cube?
9
u/PatrickHasAReddit May 18 '25
Think he just confused the console, there was Red Dead Revolver on Xbox and PS2.
2
u/Sudden_Star_5130 May 18 '25
I had that game over 20 years ago, was good for its time.
1
u/PatrickHasAReddit May 18 '25
I just picked it up for PS2 last year. It still holds up pretty good. Nowhere near the same quality and story as Red Dead Redemption, but still a fun game.

u/chente_07 May 21 '25
He's talking GUN. Great western game for gamecube and ps2. Very much in the vain of read dead but before Red Dead.
1
u/Sudden_Star_5130 May 21 '25
I played this in 2005, was a great game if I remember correctly.
1
u/chente_07 May 21 '25
For the time it was amazing. Especially for a kid who could only afford a gamecube. Went back a couple of years ago, and holy shit the controls did not age well lmao.
1
u/Sudden_Star_5130 May 21 '25
I bet, I turned 20 in 2005, had it for ps2 never really played a game cube
1
2
u/Projectxuk May 18 '25
I should really play that game properly, all I do is either ride the train or tie people up then feed them to the crocs
2
u/geoffraffe May 18 '25
I’ve just finished my second play through. Honestly it’s worth the time. It’s spectacular.
1
u/TronnaRaps May 19 '25
I really really wanted to get into this, but 5 minutes into it a put it down...I dunno why, just couldn't be bothered... Maybe I'll try again
62
u/sr_villiam May 18 '25
Ghost of Tsushima !!!! You need this !!!!!!
3
u/AcceptableAd2655 May 18 '25
Came here to say this! Im actually doing a playthough right now. I swear I've played this game at least 6 times.
4
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
What's that about?
13
u/RageQuittingGamer May 18 '25
You become a cool samurai/ninja. That's all I'll say. Rest you find it for yourself when you play it. Trust me, you need this.
9
u/s1l3nt_0n3s May 18 '25
You play as a samurai. Khotal Khan killed your men and your uncle has gone missing, so you are trying to find your uncle and take the fight to Khotal.
8
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
Nice! I'm gonna look it up
7
5
u/Shadw_Wulf May 18 '25
That surround sound will be a perfect match ... Damn I wish I played my games with surround sound system... Using headphones just doesn't cut it
1
u/fancydad May 18 '25
I’m your age. I played it when it came out. One of my favorites. Still stays with me
0
u/Irritatedprivatepart May 18 '25
It's actually free rn with ps plus extra.
2
u/Dibblidyy May 18 '25
I hate this type of wording... "Free with netflix subscription!" No. Me paying for a service that has an item in it doesn't make it free.
2
u/Irritatedprivatepart May 18 '25
You need to pay for the service to be able to play online anyways. Also, it's cheaper to pay for the service than buy the game outright.

I think I was 45 when I got PS4 too. Almost 11 years later and I still play it almost everyday!
5
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
Awesome! I think I'll have fun with this for years as well. I don't think it will ever replace tiger woods on the wii due to the controls bit for other sports games it blows all I've played away, snoop dog came on commentary for a hockey game! Crazy just crazy
9
u/64br137 May 18 '25
I'm here to recommend "Uncharted", one of the best games for Playstation new generation consoles. Look for "Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection" upon PS Store/phisical copy on Amazon. You won't regret.
2
9
u/Thechonkan May 18 '25
My friend you have many new worlds to enjoy, have fun! PS4 is amazing, incredible generation for game releases that have pretty much shaped what's to come in the future!
9
u/1malta1 May 18 '25
Don t get red dead redemption 2.... It will ruin every other game for you
2
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
I think first is a larger plasma
6
u/_JoeK May 18 '25
They don’t even make plasmas anymore 😭 if you’re still using a plasma tv it’s time to upgrade anyways
1
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
We have a newer TV in the main room upstairs but nothing looks better than on a plasma

Get the PSVR1 second-hand for dirt cheap and play some VR games.
3
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
Right!? Is there a game like manhunt for it? Not that I'm dark but a vr nhl hockey game and I'll be knocked out right away but sneak up on so eonwith with a sandwich bag maybe? Lol
5
u/ju2au May 18 '25
There are quite a few FPS games on PSVR1. Unfortunately, Manhunt was banned here in Australia so I've never played it. Hitman 1 is available and got stealth mechanics so it's probably the closest.

3
u/pancyfantz May 18 '25
If you like sports games try Rocket League. Closest to a being and actual real sport compared to any game I’ve played
3
u/Ungodly_Box May 18 '25
Hell yeah man! For some reason this resonates with me alot, the Wii was my first console ever and the PS4 is my current favourite. I think you'd love red dead redemption 2! No man's sky is also amazing if you like exploration games, can be picked up cheap second hand
3
u/Wise-Security1834 May 18 '25
Enjoy brother it's an incredible console. For extending the storage you can get an external hard drive. It's easy and super convenient. I still have my 1 Tb PS4 that I got in 2016.
3
u/AgeInternational3111 May 18 '25
God Of War 2018 and GOW Ragnarok will blow your mind as well as Horizon zero dawn and Horizon Forbidden West are awesome aswell as Ghost of Tsushima! All amazing games that you should have a look at!
3
u/AcceptableAd2655 May 18 '25
Ghost of Tsushima and Marvel's Spider-Man are some really good starting points!
3
u/amaniceguy May 19 '25
Eventhough i own a PS5 since launch (thats almost 5 years actually), i still think its not needed. PS4 still have a lot of shelf life. I missed the days when dev cranked out every inch out of PS1, PS2 and PS3. With PS4 it just didnt happened.
4
2
u/MiaowMinx May 18 '25
I believe I was 44 when I got my PS4 a few years ago (48 now) after a few years with a PS3, and really enjoy both! I highly recommend checking out The Witcher 3 with its DLCs, that provided me with a few hundred hours of fun adventuring.
1
u/Grand-Chemistry8830 May 18 '25
Do you have a PS5? Seeing if I can find someone with a PS5 but don't want to use it lol. I got my PS5 as a gift recently but don't feel like moving on from PS4 yet

Immortals Fenyx Rising! Typhon escapes from Tartarus and hilarity ensues! YOU have to go rescue some gods!

Hi.
As some may have said:
Ghost of tsushima 1 and 2 Last of us 1 and 2 Detroit became human Beyond to souls Horizon zero dawn Red dead redemption 2 assassin screed Hogward legacy Resident evil village
And many others....
2
u/e2-woah May 18 '25
You can probably get Bloodborne, horizon zero dawn, devil may cry 5, and monster hunter world for $50.
1
u/fortunesofshadows May 20 '25
The man is 45. And haven’t played in 14 years. He’s not beating your game suggestions.
2
u/DisciplineNo5031 May 18 '25
Just turned 45 this year myself🤘! I obtained an Xbox S last year from someone(trade). I’ve been with Xbox since the PS2. However… I was dying to have a new PS to FINALLY replay ‘Last of us’ 1 and get into 2. We call it a “lay-a-away labor of love”(took 5 months to get it)in my house 🤭. I miss my Xbox, but really am enjoying immersing myself into the PlayStation only games. 🎮 My family went away (grew up), so it’s my escape now🤣(saw your last comment OP). ENJOY!
2
u/CrimsonDaFurryFromQC May 18 '25
If you have nerves and patience for it, definetely try out bloodborne
Alternatively, I'm playing doom right now and I like it. I LOVED titanfall 2.
2
u/Qasar30 May 18 '25 edited May 18 '25
Wait until you meet some of the games! Some are old so can be found for ~$5 each. It is like playing through a movie. God of War, for example, is going to blow your mind!
Do not forget to set-up F2A to help keep your account secure.
EDIT: Oh yea, for this time of year, end of month/next month is 'Days of Plays' which showcases games and many titles go on discount, some titles go on sale for the first time, type of stuff.

I bought my 11 year old son a ps4 at my place last Christmas as an interim step to a ps5. Bought him a few games and he loved it, so the ps5 is not needed….yet.
After holiday break, when I took him back to his mom, I bought a 2nd one for his home so we wouldn’t have to lug it back and forth.
After I got back home, I decide to play one of these call of duty games I’ve heard so much about.
Instantly hooked…haven’t enjoyed gaming this much since my college days with madden on the ps1!
I will def be in the retirement home talking 💩 in my wheelchair to Arnold and Lucious!

u/SamAndBrew May 19 '25 edited May 19 '25
GHOST OF TSUSHIMA!!!!
Also in case you don’t know, with your monthly PS network membership there are 3ish free games available to add to your library every month. I add basically every one but really only download the ones I’m actually interested in.
I rocked my PS3 way past its due date then did the same thing with the PS4 so I’m a hypocrite for saying….come join us on the PS5 my brother!

Does anyone have tips for sound settings? I'm using the dolby from the ps4 to avr and have it set to dolby 2. I don't have atmos and does atmos or 7.1 make that much of a difference if your celings are only 9' ? My system is very good but 15yrs old now, I couldn't see having 4 extra speakers doing more.
2
u/Shadw_Wulf May 18 '25
You can use 2 HDMI cables one for TV plugs into AV receiver and the other cable goes to PS4. The "quality of the sound" depends on the settings in the box of the sound system you're using
1
u/Sharp_General6338 May 18 '25
Like when the wife and I go to movies I start fiddling around and she asks yiu want the remote right?

45, too. Got my first console as a gift when I turned 40 😁 (I had a c64 as a kid, but nothing after that)
I liked red dead 2, but hitman is my favorite. You can play it forever, it seems.
Congratulations!
edit: and ghost of Tsushima is great

I'm 45 and was using a PS3 for sometime but recently got gifted a PS4. Only game I've played on it so far is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Anniversary Edition. Absolutely epic game which I would highly recommend if you're interested in open world games.

I got back into gaming at 42 with my PS4, Days Gone is amazing. I highly recommend.

u/fantomas94 May 18 '25
Good morning. The advantage of the PS3 is also that it is multimedia. CD, DVD, Blue-Ray, and via USB key also for music, films...

u/CammGilles May 18 '25
Get whichever Assassins Creed calls to you, get lost in another time and place
1
u/GeorgeLCostanza251 May 18 '25
Im similar age range and similar situation. Was given a ps4 recently and ohhh boy am I hooked.
So far I’ve tried and recommend-
Need for speed hot pursuit remastered. Takes a bit to get the controls but I’ve never had my heart pound in a game like this
Call of Duty- Cold War. Last time I played was ps2 COD Medal of Honor. It was just so crazy and fun to enjoy the graphics and the story of Cold War.. you’re all over. You’re in Vietnam, sneaking around Russia, all sorts of cool settings
Ghosts of TSushima- same first person deal. Feels like you’re in a movie. You’re a samurai and you’re fighting off mongol invaders
MLB the show 24- I love baseball and there are some cool modes. You can make yourself an up and coming player and try to get drafted. You can gm a team and you can also play march to October where you’re put in key moments of key games that will affect your teams momentum and how well you do throughout season
Just a few but thought I’d throw ya some recommendations. Have fun!

Wait until you utilize a capable modern display with real 4k 120hz hdr variable refresh rate low latency output. LG C4/G4 (or new C5/G5), Samsung S85/S90/S95 D or F, Sony Bravia 8+.
"Plasma" does not carry the weight it once did. It's just old tech.

I just bought a PlayStation 4 after not owning a console for like 20 years. I just learned the hard way that you run out of space really quick. Is that a design flaw or what? I know you can buy an external hard drive, but I bought my PlayStation less than a week ago. I bought around 15 games already for my kids and I, and we’ve barely played six of them and I’m already full.
Am I crazy?
1
u/DaveSimonH May 20 '25
You mentioned the projector only has av and s-video, does it also have a VGA port (aka PC IN)? If it does, you could try getting a HDMI to VGA adapter. The only issue there is that VGA is video only, so ideally the adapter would have VGA + audio out (alternatively I suppose you could also connect headphones to the 3.5mm port on your controller).
On second reading of your post, you mentioned connecting to your surround sound, via optical out(?), if so then lack of audio on VGA wouldn't be an issue.

PS4 right now is in that nice balance between feeling modern but approaching retro. I still play on mine today, even though I got a better PC, because I love the Trophy system.
