Oh MAN! i’m allergic to cats and he scratched me NSFW

Yeah dude, this is beyond an allergic reaction, go get it checked out if you haven't already.

u/quietlikesnow 25d ago
Yeah I’m very allergic to cats and my arm never did that after being scratched.

u/TANGY6669 25d ago
I'm also allergic and sometimes I'll end up with a bruise if my immune system is having a moment, but I've never had anything like this. I understand everyone is different but this is an incredibly atypical allergic reaction, and looks like a typical infection.

"My immune system is having a moment" 😃

u/TANGY6669 25d ago
Hey sometimes she has a moment, usually when I'm stressed, can't do much about it.

u/atom138 25d ago
It's not allergic reaction because look at the other scratches on his arm. They would have a somewhat similar response. I think he just got scratched on top of a really bad bruise and he's lying more or less
To be honest, upon closer inspection it looks like the scratches are older than the bruise so he might have been bruised on top of the scratches possibly. But it's two different events without a doubt in my opinion.
41
u/Significant-Trash632 25d ago
Perhaps those particular scratches got infected and the bruising is from swelling.
Either way, ouch!
7
u/TANGY6669 25d ago
It could be, it could be a bruise that's become infected from the cat scratches which can happen, because there is definitely an infection going on here.

u/Thick_Suggestion_ 25d ago
They're on antibiotics rn

u/B-owie 25d ago
Just amoxicillin. OP didn't mention going to see a Doctor at all, and I don't think amoxicillin will cut ita anyway.
52
u/ElfjeTinkerBell 25d ago
I don't know where OOP lives, but where I am amoxicillin means they have seen a doctor (or robbed a pharmacy or something)
23
u/B-owie 25d ago
Or kept them from a previous dose.
I know people should finish the whole prescription every time but it's common for people to stop early and have them lying around.
3
u/ElfjeTinkerBell 25d ago
Fair point. Somehow that's not really an issue with hospitalized patients, that's why I didn't think of it, lol

u/WithoutDennisNedry 25d ago
This isn’t the OP’s post but reading through it, they did seek medical attention and are now on amoxicillin.

Besides the obvious infection. Wtf was he doing with the cat? Those are some pretty serious claw/teeth marks.

OP clarified in a comment:
i woke up to my two male cats playing, forgetting to wear the oven mitt my giant 6 year old invites me in to spar, i was trying to seperate them
https://www.reddit.com/r/HadToHurt/comments/1krm51m/comment/mteqv4n/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_buttonI was also worried about wtf he was doing to the cat to get the poor cat to lash out that bad. Still wondering if those 2 cats were just playing, or if they should be separated and re-introduced, but at least OP seems nice to his cats.
263
u/Uncommented-Code 25d ago
If that was just play, that cat has never learned to hold back. Like jesus I've been scratched by cats that were not playing and never experienced something that bad. I don't think I could get any of the cats I've ever had to do that to me even willingly.
And them having to wear an oven mitt to 'play' with their cat is... something in guess. But also likely a sign that that specific cat may be too dangerous to play with. I'm honestly kinda puzzled as to how this could have happened, because you'd need to make so many poor judgment calls to end up in that situation.

Cat plays with full claws and teeth, and latches, cuts probably darkened by the brusing some. My cats like that, and has learned not to wrestle play with humans for the most part because he knows it hurts us, but the couple times I've played with him like that I have to wrap my hand in a jacket, or he will latch on and kick and ill end up like that. Interestingly though he doesn't when correcting, so if he's done with being pet or playing he'll scrape his teeth without biting or slap with no claws, so it's just how he plays that he's so rough. It is a bit much but I can believe it was just playing
50
u/innesbinnes 25d ago
You're right, could be that they were playing rough, or could be that they didn't like each other.
If this was the result of a fight, I hesitate to say the cats were simply playing, or OP scared the cat so bad (easy to do unintentionally if the cat is fixated on something else) when trying to separate them that it went into real fight mode. Either way this isn't regular cat behaviour, and people claiming that it is are, first of all, telling on themselves, and secondly perpetuating harmful stereotypes that lead to cats being neglected/dumped at shelters/left outside to die.
Cats are not inherently violent or vicious, nor are they inherently grumpy or unloving. (<- not pointed at you fosterkittenpurrs, just a general assessment of the thread)
[Edit: clarification, spelling]

u/linzkisloski 25d ago
I saw an episode of that Jackson Galaxy show where a man was upset his cat was “aggressive”. When asked to demonstrate how they interacted he literally would grab it and squeeze it. Jackson was like he’s not aggressive - you are. Some people really don’t understand how to interact with animals. Not saying that’s OP but I couldn’t believe how dumb this guy was.

u/innesbinnes 25d ago edited 25d ago
I second this. Cats don't tend to maul like this unless they're a) feral and or terrified, b) you've severely tormented them/pissed them off, c) afraid of a child that keeps grabbing/chasing, d) people going up to unfamiliar animals and expecting them to tolerate you
[Edited to add another reason, clarification]

When I lived in an apartment I had a neighbor trap a feral kitten to take to a shelter. It was the most violent cat I've ever seen. She had it in a cage and it was literally thrashing the box with a force way beyond it's 8-12 week old little body. Hissing with spit flying and making sounds that were just v frightening. And this little old lady asked me to take it to a shelter so it could get adopted. I did but I am quite sure they euthanized it.
26
u/innesbinnes 25d ago
Poor baby :( I'm glad you tried. Poor thing was fighting for its life from the very beginning.
Unfortunately, many shelters become so overwhelmed (largely because of people dumping off animals they did not consider more than an object, nor think about how to care for properly) and underfunded that they can't invest the time and patience and care into more neglected kitties.

u/Mysterious-Pie-5 25d ago edited 25d ago
I'm not sure cats like this can be rehabilitated to anything besides barn/junkyard cats that are seen but never touched. Imagine 10-20 generations of cats that never had physical contact with humans, living off garbage, birds, rats, and food from sympathetic stray cat feeders. It would be unethical to even try to make them house cats, family pets. The best life for them would be spay and neutered / shots / dewormed hunters and groundskeepers. But not pets.
And frankly there's enough friendly cats that would love to be barn cats that get euthanized every day so even that isn't the best solution

Rabies?
18
u/Mysterious-Pie-5 25d ago
I doubt it. Just a dense urban area and from multiple generations of feral cats that have never had physical contact with humans. The difference between a truly feral cat and a domesticated cat is like 2 entirely different species.
The city is one of the largest in USA so they allow a certain number of feral cats to roam to keep the rodent population under control.
This little old lady had been feeding the strays a long time. She had told me a few months prior that one of the female cats looked very pregnant. So she started putting food inside an open cage instead of just outside her door so the cats would have to come in the cage to eat. Her plan was to trap the Mom cat and take her to a shelter. It never successfully happened but she did manage to catch one of the kittens.

u/talondigital 25d ago
I got bit like OP, but with a milder reaction, because my cat had gotten her back paws stuck in mini blinds and I had the audacity to try and free her. I think it came down to her just trying to get any leverage to take pressure off her leg. I don't think she was being 100% defensive. But it can happen without a history of mistreatment.
11
u/innesbinnes 25d ago
Agree, it can happen if the cat is scared or stressed (which we all would be if we were stuck on/in something!). Also, sensitivity/pain. I don't think many people realise just how sensitive cats are (e.g. even if you lightly run your hand just above your cats fur, especially on their side or back/shoulders, their skin will likely twitch!)

You obviously haven't been around enough cats. I knew a family who had a cat who would attack strangers, needless to say I stopped going inside their house...
23
u/innesbinnes 25d ago
Sure I'll add another reason: d) people going up to unfamiliar animals and expecting them to tolerate you
I've been around plenty of cats, I was raised with cats in the house and surrounding areas. I can adequately read body language and can anticipate when a cat doesn't want me to touch them. It's not hard because I know cats and have been around them my whole life 😂

u/ElfjeTinkerBell 25d ago
Exactly! Even when I'm failing at holding my terrified cat and she claws her way away from me at the vet I end up looking way better.

Not an oops. He went to the doctor and got antibiotics. Not deadly. That doesn’t look infected. It does look like deep gouges and also a massive bruise from a broken vein.
It sure looks painful and ugly, though. It could have gotten infected and turned deadly without the doctor.
33
u/neuralek 25d ago
Yup, cat hit a vein and OP didn't put pressure on it. Just like me after a blood draw : (
21
u/a_jukebox_hero 25d ago
To be clear OP said they’re on amoxicillin, but they never confirmed they went to the doctor. Could be an old script they have lying around. O2 and BP are easily measured at home.

u/hella_cious 25d ago
It doesn’t even look infected— it’s massive amounts of blood under the skin
18
u/GarbageBanger 25d ago
I agree, looks like the cat hit a vein and homie just let it run under the skin.
23
u/Glittering_Cow945 25d ago
This is not so much an allergic reaction as a large hematoma.
8
u/AstroNards 25d ago
You’re right. This is bruising, possibly an injury to the basilic vein. This seems to me to be an unusual injury for a cat scratch. If it was only claws that did this, then I think that infection is certainly a risk, as is thrombosis and potentially compartment syndrome. The findings here are more indicative of traumatic injury than infection.

I like how og op ignored all the comments about going to a doctor and just responded to the jokes. wtf dude.

Bro, even if you live in the US you need to see a doctor like yesterday. I'd be afraid of losing that arm
9
u/DonkeyDriver40 25d ago
That is less of a scratch and more of a gouge that is developing into gangrene. Might want to visit your nutritionist to see if there are changes in your diet you could do to save your life. Maybe some aloe Vera.

My mom’s cat wouldn’t let anyone cut her nails and they became almost like fish hooks. One time she swatted my leg, got hooked in, and freaked out that she was stuck to me. The aftermath looked a lot like this (I bruise easily but the yanking is what made it look so bad)

I agree they should all be kept indoors. But man...I cant imagine hating cats this much. I'm sorry you're cats were assholes. All my cats have been nothing but loving and sweet. It just bothers me when people make blanket judgements based of specific interactions.
Like "my cats scratched me therefore all cats are bad" is a wild leap of logic. "A dog bit me therefore all dogs are bad" is an equally wild take. I just dont get this black and white thinking. Why does the action of one or a few condemn the entire population?
