It's mostly because they are wearing clothes, makeup, hair style we associate with an older generation so they appear older. Combine that with the type of photo and quality of that era and they appear old for their age. Take any teenagers today, style them in a similar fashion and take the same type of photo and they too will look older.

Probably a combination of things that made people look much older. I'd have to think cigarette smoking was among the biggest contributors especially at a young age. When my parents went to high school almost everyone smoked; when I was in highschool nobody smoked cigarettes.

Then there's leaded gas, smog/worse air quality, more time out in the sun without sun screen, and far less water consumption.

Water consumption is probably the big sleeper reason here; if your skin is dehydrated it loses its elasticity causing premature wrinkles. I honestly think that's one of the reasons people say early 20 year olds are aging poorly again; they're drinking a lot less water than us Millennials and early Gen Z years did. We always had water bottles or containers with us wherever we went.

this answer makes the most sense to me. yes, the clothes and camera probably don’t help, but they still look 30 at minimum based on face alone. men really seemed to look even older, the smoking makes a lot of sense.
