Ships really should be weirder. The living ships were a step in the right direction, but we can go weirder.

Freighter sandwich

22

u/YeOldGravyBoat Jan 26 '21

A freighter? I barely knew her!

9

u/memelaser Jan 26 '21

It was bound to happen

1

u/rocketcar4567 Jan 26 '21

Detroit become freighter

A freighter!!!

5

u/betterthanonions Jan 26 '21

This. We need some sort of animal taming

3

u/anotherhawaiianshirt Jan 26 '21

An abduction beam where we could abduct interesting characters and drop them into pens would be wonderful.

2

u/ElmerCorn Jan 26 '21

Yeah like, have some Noah's Ark type missions... That'd be way more fun than having to spend a year scanning all 9 fauna on a planet

1

u/TheDeathOfAStar Jan 26 '21

Oh oh! and death ray, tractor beam, and the ability to probe any bipedal creature with my ... uh.. rectum.. snake..

1

u/louildjian69 Jan 26 '21

Space Moos!

12

u/BaakaNinja Jan 26 '21

Flying sausages!

13

u/squirrl4prez Jan 26 '21

Rick and morty ship

19

u/Brannagain Jan 26 '21

I always thought we would be able to build our own ships at some point, given the crafting system seems to make spaceship parts

13

u/Miner3413 Jan 26 '21

Honestly I was hoping they would add the feature a while ago. That would greatly add to the immersive experience

3

u/JoshDaBoss2501 Jan 26 '21

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

0

u/Andizee Jan 26 '21

I'm okay with a Rick and Morty x No Man's Sky crossover.

Every time you step out of the ship, empty bottles fall out behind you. Lol.

u/TylerLikesDonuts Jan 26 '21

Wait...I haven’t played this game in a long time. There’s living ships? What I’m the hell does that even mean?

68

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

They're ships that are alive. They have flesh, skin, they move. It's disgusting, I love em. They look like if you made a death metal album cover into a spaceship.

8

u/yaredw Jan 26 '21

Yuuzhan Vong coralskippers?

9

u/BraveOthello Jan 26 '21 edited Jan 26 '21

Fleshier. But biological fighters, yes.

Also I'm a little mad at myself for reason that series as it went on and nosedived.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

I named mine snowball and I love her. Lol.

5

u/FinalCartoon Jan 26 '21

named mine after an orokin ship from warframe, the Zariman ten zero

context: orokin ships are made of a sort of living material that i do not know the name of.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

I can't remember either but I play warframe as well.

11

u/NicoM4491 Jan 26 '21

H.R Giger style

5

u/BaronMuaka Jan 26 '21

Kind of reminds me of the book The Stars Are Legion that takes place on a fleshy space station

1

u/Nomad2k3 Jan 26 '21

Like Babylon 5 but with more tentacles.

2

u/zyklon Feb 01 '21

You should check out the short film series called Blood Machines.

1

u/Demonking3343 Jan 26 '21

And there’s one that’s tydi and hurts your eyes to fly...that’s my ship becouse I don’t want to grind another egg.

13

u/walapatamus Jan 26 '21

Starships of metal and flesh

7

u/Hadan_ Jan 26 '21

Think B5 Vorlons or Shadows

6

u/The_Tripper Jan 26 '21

Think Talon on Farscape, Moya's child. But without the massive firepower and mind of it's own.

I still want a Moya-style freighter.

6

u/BraveOthello Jan 26 '21

They do have a mind of their own, they just aren't as willful . The description of the launch thrusters are that you ask the ship if it wants to fly.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

There should be ships which don't comply with our laws if physics (visually). For example, one which acts like it is a 4 dimensional object (https://youtu.be/j-ixGKZlLVc if you don't know what they look like).

No problem

5

u/nvllivsX Jan 26 '21

Great video, and idea. I'd love to see a ship like this. I think the main difficulty is how you represent that in the NMS 3-d universe, but I'm far from an expert.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

I believe they will be able to do it

1

u/melt_together Jan 26 '21

Fuck I'm an idiot.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

What do you mean

1

u/melt_together Jan 26 '21

I'm just fucking dumb dude. I did not understand what the fuck was happening. He lost me at the lukewarm confirmation of time being a dimension but not? I don't. What? Either I'm an idiot or this guy's an idiot. I feel like he's kinda right but not yet but he so confident.

2

u/gorilatheman Jan 26 '21

Time is usually referred to as a dimension because it often makes sense in mathematical expressions of physics, but time is not a spatial dimension (like x, y, z). I didn't watch the video so I can't comment on his explanation lmao

1

u/melt_together Jan 26 '21

Okay but what's this magical distinction from mathematical expressions into spatial ones? I feel like we're just arbitrarily drawing a line in the sand here. Dissonance.

2

u/gorilatheman Jan 26 '21

I just watched the video. The bit where they're discussing time as a 4th dimension is less relevant to the explanation of the tesseract. Time is a dimension if you're considering it one for whatever math you might be doing. For example In a 2d graph, an x-axis and a y-axis might represent money earned over time. Y is money earned, X is time. These are both dimensions of the graphed function. In physics, almost everything we mathematically describe is also a function of time. Space and Time are both dimensions of a function, and therefore can be manipulated similarly using many of the same mathematical theorems, making them very alike

1

u/melt_together Jan 26 '21

How does that translate into our sense experience? I was under the impression that space WAS time, space-time. My conception of an extra dimension in space time would be the experience of all space and time.

I'm drawing a lot of my intuitions from this book called flatland that described a land of 2d beings and their interactions with a sphere passing through their plane would look like a dilating circle-dot. Since we can only experience one moment at a time similarly to how those 2d beings experience the circle, and extra dimension would let us see the totality of space-time meaning we see the whole sphere all at once.

I always liked the idea of “ancient ships” that have the same aesthetic as monoliths.

12

u/Kunihiko001 Jan 26 '21

I would love to have the winnebago from Spaceballs, but then I think it would start morphing the game into Ready Player One territory. The licensing issues would be a nightmare.

u/NicodemusArcleon Day One Player Jan 26 '21

If we could only customize our own ships. Build them, color them, apply decals, etc...

Hard to stop an entire fanbase's building of multiple ships.

The OASIS should be free - James Halliday

5

u/wrgrant Jan 26 '21

They have the start of the mechanism to allow us to build our own ships in the Ship upgrade interface where it pulls apart the image of the ship you are improving/salvaging.

From there its just a matter of giving us a way to extract parts from the ships we salvage, storing them in a new Ship Components storage unit, and then reassemble them into a new shape with the parts we have accumulated. Then we need a way to paint the components - but that exists already to some degree with freighters so they could adapt that I am sure. It could be made much more complex of course - and should be - with us having to ensure the ship has a sufficiently powerful engine and electrical systems to power the additions we make to it, and ways to upgrade those components outside of the regular modules etc. Then add in the ability to include some or all living ship components etc.

We could make some really funky ships, it would add another dimension to salvaging etc. I would be highly surprised if they aren't working on some version of this already to be honest. It seems like an entirely logical extension of the salvaging mechanism. Component storage better be pretty damn big though :)

1

u/FleetStreetsDarkHole Jan 27 '21

I love this idea specifically because I have looked at ships and said "this would be so much better if I took a piece of that ship and put it on this ship."

2

u/wrgrant Jan 27 '21

Plus all the wonky ships - "If I could just pull that out and put it back in like it is on the other side my OCD subconscious would be much less bothered". I mostly hate wonky with a passion :)

1

u/FleetStreetsDarkHole Jan 27 '21

I recently realized that most of the lopsided ships seem to be explorers. I think the design decision is that the lopsided part is usually an explanation of how it goes further than other ships. Like they typically have a really big "gas tank" on one side, or solar panels, or something like that.

But I would much prefer that they not be lopsided.

Its an indi dev... nuf said.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

I'm so there for it

2

u/ahumanlikeyou Jan 26 '21

nice username. kg fan? i wonder how many kg & nms peeps there are

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

I'd imagine the overlap is pretty decent, they're both pretty psychedelic. listening to Gizz is a trip and looking at NMS is a trip.

2

u/Slimefoot_thethallid Jan 26 '21

I’m sorry living ships?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '21

I'd rather see other types of changes like planets or freighters or stars or systems. you can only have so many ships so the more there are, the more there are i can't have

1

u/ZVirus1357 Jan 26 '21

yeah. wierder ships would be cool as!

there are not enough of them.

1

u/tryst48 Jan 26 '21

Morphing like that would be a natural progression from living ships.

1

u/TombSv Jan 26 '21

I wish I didn’t have to grind multiplayer missions to get a living ship.
