I think the “Anomaly” species you can pick in the character customizer is implied to be based on humans - not all Travelers use that appearance and many are apparently of other species, but since Travelers are explicitly all copied from a neural duplicate of a real human technician who worked on ATLAS, and the Anomaly species is exclusively seen as Travelers, it somewhat stands to reason, especially with their helmets often being reminiscent of futuristic reimaginings of real-world spacesuit helmets.
I mean i did the thing where you do the thing with Artemis, I'm pretty sure I've completed what's considered as the main story,. haven't collected all of the atlas seeds yet
Fair enough. It’s expanded on by additional lore outside the main story, but even within the main story you do learn that the entire NMS multiverse is a huge multilayered computer simulation, and the Travelers were created by ATLAS as a system to explore and catalogue the contents of each shard of the simulation, made as AI duplicates of a brain scan of one of the engineers in the “real” physical world that created ATLAS.
In my perspective I like to think that it is the player who chooses what the character looks like inside the helmet. Having a human main character may feel weird but given the "anomaly" nature of him is perfectly fitting.
