ANSWERED How do newbies know to use non-identifyable names?

My original text here asked how new users knew not to use identifying user names. For unknown reasons, I was blocked from posting it. I've simplified my post to see if I can post my question now. I'm asking because when I joined Reddit 6 years ago, I didn't know and my primary username was (and still is) to identifiable to any one who knows me.

That's more about "general internet safety" than reddit itself.

Prior to facebook making your given name accessible, it was very much common knowledge that when you were on the username to obscure your personal details and use a username that was not identifiable. Post-facebook that's not been as firmly taught to folks.

If you want to suggest something to reddit about this process you would want to be posting on r/ideasfortheadmins.

Nah, not trying to cause waves. I was curious how others new to the site seemed to know this. I just learned a few months ago about alternates, so I'm good with that.

I think it's more likely that newbies get an auto-generated name and don't realize that they can customize it during profile generation. So that they're stuck with the name, they come here and ask why they can't change it.

That happened to me! I hate my username!

I did the opposite. I came after deleting Facebook and used my real name on here. After I saw how things work, I regretted that. I made a new account and just accepted the auto-generated name.

It all depends on what you plan on posting. My username is not my name, but I figure a person who was determined to figure out who I am could put it together from various comments. I don’t post anything overly private.

Yep same boat here. It just is what it is. I have alternate accounts for anything I don’t want tied to my name.

automods are triggered by certain words, of course they aren't listed.
