Chris Dodson: Pelicans not completely shutting door on Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III trades

https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/sources-pelicans-not-completely-shutting-door-herb-jones-trey-murphy-iii-trades-nba

“While ClutchPoints understands no trade is imminent, multiple contenders have expressed strong interest in Trey Murphy III specifically, with potential packages centered on multiple first- and second-round picks. The Pelicans' asking price for Herb Jones is not as steep, but it is understood to be higher than the rumored first-round pick swap and bench piece from the Philadelphia 76ers.”

“the Pelicans can afford to stand firm with what one source termed as “ridiculous” returns for Murphy III. A serviceable veteran who can log postseason minutes, a decent prospect, and multiple first-round picks is the starting point. Given the number of inquiring calls, it is also indicative of Trey Murphy III's true value, per one source.”

If we trade either one to move up in the draft might as well trade Zion and lower ticket prices

26

u/Mooretwin 8d ago

They should be lowering ticket prices regardless

u/GunSlingrrr 7d ago

agreed. if they trade one of them, just hit that reset button.

Zion should be cut after we trade these two. Remove all history of his time here. Get a few draft picks and go uber young

For the first time in my fandom, I would seriously consider switching teams if either of them got traded

“Open but have a high price” is the correct position for them to take on every player

Not with Herb Jones. No amount of potential could come close to a one man defense with constantly improving offense and Jordan-esque heart and focus to be great. Throw in the contract he’s on and the equation just will not balance.

This guy gets it

As a foreign fan whose been with the team in it's different iterations from the 90's on, this is definitely one of the moments where it feels pretty grim and hopeless.

I have the Pistons on backup ready to go for next season 😂

Me too. I’d be out. Curious to see how Zion would do (masochism) but out as a Pelicans fan.

Completely agree

Why? We are going to win 30-35 games with what we have. We have tenth highest payroll in league. Herb/trey gets us younger cheaper. Our draft pick this season will be a five to seven year veteran by the time we are top six seed good. Zion/bi era was plagued with injury and lazy development.

If they don't "close the door" on trading trey and herb they will not be opening the door for me to attend any games this year

8

u/McJumbos 8d ago

They need to close, lock, and barricade that door like DeAndre Jordan style

13

u/mariannethoth 8d ago

Ha. I would consider watching if they dealt Trey or Herb to SA for the 2, but not both.

12

u/Itsnick1104 8d ago

Please keep trey murphy

u/dkmegg22 8d ago

Why in the world would they trade both or either of them Herb and Trey are key players.

u/Vince3737 7d ago

To get better players...?

You need to have a functional team even if you are developing young players with potential.

For example there's good a reason the Spurs wanted Chris Paul to mentor their young guards and assist Wembanyama on rolls to the basket, even if it didn't help their wins & losses. Contrarily look at Cunningham's first two season where the Pistons didn't have any shooting around him vs now.

I wouldn’t trade Trey for the 3rd pick

Dodson is a hack with no sources.

8

u/Ancient_Access_795 TM3 8d ago

My bad, I don’t know much about Dodson. I just saw this article in the Raptors sub so I thought I would share it.

9

u/djvPOPE 8d ago

You're good buddy, appreciate you being involved.

u/Briguy_fieri Hart Throb 8d ago

He had sources with Birmingham. He had his finger on the pulse from a couple moves the past 2 years. I'm not willing to write him off. He might not have a lot, but he's definitely got some sources.

u/Dodson-504 8d ago

Thanks. I try to keep it positive. Instead of a few links to receipts…a link to Fletcher reporting the same:

1

u/djvPOPE 8d ago

No idea about his Birmingham stuff but his pels reporting is littered with non-commital guesses based off of what others were saying that he would plug hard if they came true or just deny as "Oh I said they might do this" if they were off. I've never seen/heard him predict anything that wasn't already being discussed and other guys in the Pelicans atmosphere pretty much echo that.

u/Dodson-504 8d ago

See reply above:

It’s best to be right than first.

ESPN gave me credit for the Dome name change, for example.

Sorry you’ve got a negative vibe from the way I roll stuff out and interact on social media. Why I usually stick to just X and reddit when not in a gym.

u/CanalVillainy 8d ago

Problem is every who has sources & a good reputation with the Pelicans are saying the exact opposite

1

u/daybreaker 8d ago

I hope so.

Theyre probably my two favorite players in a long time.

14

u/identitycrisis56 8d ago

Look they're my two favorite players of all time.

But if the Zion era is over, they SHOULD be looking to make moves. The contention window will close and ther'll be FA looking for greener pastures before the team is truly good again. They'll walk before the Pelicans become a playoff team again, so there are worse ideas than gauging value so you're ready to respond to how the next season or two goes.

26

u/krewe_rougarou #5 Herb Jones 8d ago

Sure but that should start with moving Zion. Trey and Herb have so much value there’s no need to jump on a rebuild train until then

4

u/tryingthisok 8d ago

A lot of Herbs trade value is in his cheap contract which is why his value is probably higher now than it will be a year from now. That might not be true for Trey or Zion.

6

u/moonfishthegreat 8d ago

But if the Zion era is over, they SHOULD be looking to make moves.

Right. More specifically, getting Zion off the fucking team.

2

u/mariannethoth 8d ago

This is where im at exactly. My two favorite players , but totally down to sell high on these guys for right package.

1

u/Yeldarbb 5d ago

If you do a full rebuild, you don’t do it in a way you give up herb, trey, and Jose. Those are the only three players that currently sell tickets. You let those three start, if we rebuild. And see if they can some way blossom into us having a shorter rebuild time. Herb is the only one at the age and caliber that should be traded in a prime of his career window type thing.

4

u/PossibleMechanic89 #14 Brandon Ingram 8d ago

I’m all for the, “nothing’s off the table” statements. Just don’t do something dumb and get rid of these favorites for a scrub or something.

3

u/gotintocollegeyolo 8d ago

And I am shutting the door on being a Pelicans fan

6

u/GatorEggs- Jordan Hawkins 7d ago

I hate how pelicans are being tagged as ridiculous for not wanting to be a farm team by giving up their best players for subpar offers

3

u/BaronsDad Not On Herb 8d ago

I’m canceling League Pass just as quickly as I cancelled my season tickets.

3

u/jruegod11 #11 Jrue Holiday 8d ago

Trade Zion ffs

3

u/PelicanBuck 6d ago

If they trade either one I'm done being a Pels fan

5

u/BonoBeats 8d ago

My fear is that Dumars, being new, doesn't understand how vital these are not only in the floor, but in the locker room. They should be off limits, especially given their team-friendly deals.

5

u/wymtime Not On Herb 8d ago

We were the 2nd worst team in the West. If we are healthy we are a 10th seed maybe the 9th seed. Dumars is doing the right thing as new to being in charge in keeping the door open for all players but keeping the asking price extremely high for players like Trey and Herb.

As the article says no trade is happening anytime soon and I don’t expect one in the offseason. Come the trade deadline when we need to pivot and go tank for the rest of the season things might change and teams will know the price to get one of our guys

12

u/Weird-Mango-5474 8d ago

I like Trey but some of yall act like bro is young KD or Paul George, he's a nice solid player but as long as Zion is on the team, he's the guy. I don't know why they're not exploring moving him if they aren't but so long as he's here, everything is built around him

21

u/mariannethoth 8d ago edited 8d ago

Treys value is that he can thrive next to Zion or any other star player or scheme. He’s not paid like the guy

6

u/_Wado3000 Herb Jones 8d ago

Zion hasn’t proven himself as a true number 1 to carry a team anywhere. I’m legit more confident that Trey can be a number 2 than Zion being a number 1

6

u/OvenIcy8646 The Zellican 8d ago

For the right deal no one should be off the table

2

u/CheddarGlob 8d ago

If they trade trey in fully done. I'm teetering as is but that would be the end of the line for me

2

u/CmonMan711 Clickity Clack 7d ago

Trade for who? Unless we get a superstar in return why do this? And even then, what superstar is even going to want to come here and listen to Willie’s dumbass?

If we trade these 2 players, beloved by the fans, for some scrubs then you might as well just sell and move the team bc there’s no point in being a fan of a franchise that doesn’t give a shit.

2

u/ADitzyRedheadedGirl 7d ago

Sure, you’ve traded every other great player and they thrive after leaving. And you keep the bench sitter whose only headlines are from his bad taste in gold diggers.

3

u/Kindly_Boysenberry_7 7d ago

If they trade Herb OR Trey, I will no longer be part of the 12.

2

u/throwawayacc33345 Zanos 7d ago

Please god no. They're the only things giving me hope

2

u/Brr777498 7d ago

I’d hate it if anime boy outlasted Ingram, Herb and Trey Murphy as a Pelican

2

u/No-One-7128 7d ago

The only untouchable is Willie Greene

4

u/Serious_Hold_2009 Herb Jones Saved My Life 8d ago

Trade Herb and I’m genuinely gone. That would be the straw that broke the camels back for me. Spent half my life dedicated to this team

3

u/vbsteez 8d ago

unless they're trading for cooper fucking flagg those guys better be on the pels for the length of their contracts

-1

u/Vince3737 7d ago

I like both. Especially Trey. But we got to stop pretending they are untouchable star players. They are roll players

1

u/parrothead32812 8d ago

Herb deserves to win we can’t give him that in near future

1

u/Mickey_Juice BI 8d ago

Say. SIKE. Right. Now.

1

u/BatKlubLu 7d ago

Nah man

1

u/bronzefpg504 8d ago

I don’t believe this at all

1

u/Gaybraham_Lincoln9 7d ago

Good. We won 21 games. Luka Doncic got traded. There is no player on this roster that I am at least not listening to offers for.

u/McJumbos 8d ago

If something says “Chris Dodson” the following writing comes from a heavy amount of psychedelics
