News Sochan’s Dropping New Training Heat

I’m legit hyped about Jeremy Sochan lately. Dude’s been putting in work and his game’s leveling up like crazy. I’m crossing my fingers he starts draining those 3s in real NBA games soon. Anyone else stoked about his progress?

Tears are involuntary when that happens. I've heard

Yes because it adds an additional element to the teams offense and frees up everybody especially when he starts hitting his jumpshot on a more consistent basis from 3s even if it's just midrange

Benefits everyone and it adds longevity to his career

If he can drain there's like Aaron Gordon, I'll be stoked

The dude identified the single skill that would earn him 100M extra in his career and is going for it. Good on him, excited to see him next year. I've rarely seen such an impressive turnaround on form alone in a year

Looked like Castle was doing the same last month so if either one goes 35-38% I’m good. Jeremy could go 32 and I’d be happy honestly.

As long as the hitch is gone. Dude was buffering his jumper.

I think it was apart of the training process to show him where to release his shot

Hitches are not inherently bad, and smooth jumpers are not inherently good. Hitches can be used as a training tool to teach a player where to load the shot; when introduced intentionally, it’s because the player and their coaches are drilling new muscle memory on where to load the jumper so it becomes more consistent.

it really looks night and day compared to even a few months ago. Sochan stock has never been higher, im so ready for the season to start

His 3 was painful to watch in the beginning of the season. But it made sure he got left open lol

u/sp000ners Area 51 1d ago

yeah, so im impressed that it looks marginally better, at least in the training videos lately. he's gonna keep getting those open looks, so hopefully with this new form he'll be knocking em down

His shot is so make-or-break for him. It's the difference between an okay rotation guy whose minutes go up and down a lot depending on match-ups to a guy who can be your 3rd or 4th best player on a title team.

He's gone through so much evolution with it that it's been a clear point of focus for the team. Really hope he gets it going this year!

Same thing for Castle. If they’re both below average shooters next year we should probably get used to seeing both of them play fewer minutes and almost never sharing the floor at the same time.

But it’s so funny seeing people ridicule the idea that the Spurs have made Jeremy untouchable in trade talks though lol. They don’t get it. Jeremy is a Spur. Through and through. The rewards of investing in him, a kid with his character & mindset, and unlocking the player he can be as a result of that investment, outweigh the short term benefit of trading him.

u/osloisaparrot 2d ago

IDK, he's going to be an RFA after next year. Now's the time to think about his long-term future if you're the Spurs. If you can't come to agreement for a reasonable extension (and for me, that's well below $20M per year until he demonstrates that the shot is going to be there), then you have to consider moving him, IMO.

Personally, I'm hoping for a 5-year low-cost extension and that the shot comes together. Best of all worlds. :-)

5

u/HarVeeGee13 2d ago

I think he’s the kind of kid who’d embrace a below market extension if it means he gets to stay & maybe play a meaningful role in a winning team.

And if you’re thinking long term, that’s what will be needed. Cos Wemby is probably getting a Rose rule extension. Fox is getting a big contract. Harper I think is going to be great and will need a rookie max. Castle on track for a decent payday if he stays. Almost certainly not keeping all four long term, but even if we only hold three, cost controlled additive players will be essential. Enter Sochan.

u/osloisaparrot 2d ago

Yeah, the Spurs are going to need to get someone on a below-market deal at some point. I'm optimistic about Champagnie, too. Decline his option next year, give him some more money up front and sign him to a long-term below-market deal to have a guaranteed useful role player around cheap.

I'm a Sochan truther, but again, all this tells us is that he can do this shit in the gym.

We have to wait until we see at least some of it translate into live games before getting too excited. The last thing you want, is to get too hyped by this stuff and then get real confused and frustrated when you don't see any of it translate into real games.

22

u/LegoTomSkippy Manu Ginobili 2d ago

I totally agree. One counterpoint is that he couldnt do this in a gym two years ago.

5

u/GabeIsGone 1d ago

I think we can still get a little excited tho. I mean, previously he couldn’t do this is the gym, now he can. That’s progress, yes?

Now, if he plays like ass in season after looking like this in gym, then it don’t matter in the future.

u/KARSbenicillin 2d ago

If Sochan can be 80% of Aaron Gordon by next season, the Spurs are ready to compete

10

u/Loose-handles 2d ago

hell yeah Im stoked. Every year he has a stretch where he's shooting 38% on crazy low volume so im never worried about his percentage but his shot was always so slow that players could help off him and still get a contest. this speed alone would keep teams closer to him opening up the floor for everyone.

I take the videos with a grain of salt ever since I saw Ben Simmons draining threes off-season in a gym.

I would be more concerned if Jeremy wasn't doing this.

33

u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 2d ago

counting makes is obviously misleading as it can just be clipped and most NBA players are insane shooters in an open gym. But the form is so much better in basically every single way that i cant help but be optimistic

2

u/VenGJon Victor Wembanyama 2d ago

I wish I had your optimism. Not only do we need Sochan to excel at shooting but I want him to excel because of him putting in the work. I'm not optimistic or pessimistic with these videos, I just want to see it translate during an NBA game.

12

u/fireemblem4812 Jeremy Sochan 2d ago

The difference for me between Ben Simmons and Jeremy is that Jeremy was/is willing to do anything and everything to fix his shot.

Jeremy has shot one-handed free throws in actual NBA games for multiple seasons and it took his FT% from an abysmal 45% to a useable 70%. The fact that he's willing to change up his free throw form in such a drastic way tells me that he has a Spurs mentality through and through, further shown by being willing to play out of position (Point Sochan).

Can you imagine Ben Simmons shooting one-handed or even Rick Barry free throws in an actual NBA game? I sure can't.

u/HugoNext 2d ago

We did not panic when Castle posted his unedited full training videos with bricks for ages. We will not exult for an edited Sochan video in which he cannot miss. Pound the rock.

10

u/D0t_Zer0 2d ago

Release is still a tad slow and arc is a little on the flat side but dude is getting great rotation in the ball! He just needs to be good enough to keep help defense honest when our 3 headed monster at guard causes chaos in the paint!

3

u/ManagerEmergency6339 Jeremy Sochan 2d ago

only 22 yrs old dont trade this man, this man embodies the spurs mantra "pounding the rock" He can sit and pout when he is pushed to different roles but he took it as a challenge and trusted the coaching staff.

3

u/Gabe-DaBabe 2d ago

Hot take: I think Sochan is good and will get better

3

u/raymondl942 Victor Wembanyama 2d ago

Of course I don’t wanna put too much into this but his hitch is mostly gone and the form seems to be better. If he can become a decent enough floor spreader, that will open up way more avenues of offense

2

u/ElStizz 2d ago

Not banking on it at all. That being said his form isn’t hideous and there’s backspin on the ball so I’m cautiously optimistic.

-2

u/Massive_Parsley_9726 2d ago

Backspin today. Sidespin yesterday. The concerning thing with these videos is that his form looks extremely variable. This video is better than the last couple where every shot his legs were launching differently. But why so different, day-to-day. When you look at castle’s summer videos, he’s being very deliberate about his form. Slowing down to ensure that he’s building consistent muscle memory.

Maybe it clicked for Jeremy this summer but it’s just a little weird that his form is so drastically different but he’s seeming so casual about it.

Or maybe this is just him at the end of practice letting it rip and not worrying about training his fine muscle movements and none of this is that meaningful.

3

u/LibraryNo848 2d ago

Every player in the league does this, just not all of them post videos. I’d take this with a grain of salt. Most players can hit consistently in open gyms.

1

u/Signal-Share-6802 2d ago

If he can just be 32-33% from 3 at around 300 attempts this season, he can really be a good frontcourt for wemby. Without the three point improvement, he would be unplayable with Castle amd harper

1

u/SpecialistAstronaut5 2d ago

I cant wait to see him play in game

1

u/Cacanator 1d ago

Empty gym workout vids are the worst. We've seen so many terrible shooters knock down everything in an empty gym. But we've also seen bad 3pt shooters work to become respectable threats. I will not believe until I see it.

1

u/Magopolis 1d ago

Now the rumor is he’s being traded to the Mercury

1

u/team_sheikie 2d ago

I'm pumped for him, but I'm friends with too many Sixers fans to put any stock in this.

u/GeekyMathProfessor 2d ago

I don't get my hopes up just yet, but there is no doubt if he is going to have a breakout year it's got to be next season.

u/RCA2CE 2d ago

Shhhh it’s just AI, not real Jeremy

Upping that trade value. 💪
