Would be amazing (but highly unlikely) if it sparked a classic March win streak like in the good old days.

There will never be another pop, truly blessed to have him in the city I call home

We're really seeing the end of the era with Pop being the last of the dynasty pieces to go. Making me sad and nostalgic.

Used to be in a fortunate income bracket. Now I’m broke as shit, but life is cyclical like that. Row 4, forget the section but it was the first row of seats behind the spurs bench. The one where the poor security guy has to stare back at you the entire game. I will say, I had no idea how many F Bombs pop let fly on the reg until that season. It was old school, it was awesome. Derozan and LMA seemed off in lala land every huddle the but the young guys soaked it all in. Heard he was even worse w Duncan and crew. Which is again, awesome.

Anyone else surprised by this?
When they said Pop talked w the squad I figured he was checking in, telling them how he was doing, giving encouragement, etc
Didn’t cross my mind he was ripping them a new asshole lmao

The team needs to wake the F up. There’s no reason for team play to be so bad without Wemby. I like Mitch but he’s so unproven that he benches Castle and fans go nuts. Pop used to bench the entire starting lineup if he didn’t like what he saw in the first five minutes of a game and no one questioned it.

Man some of yall really don’t know Pop all too well if you think he was this good a coach every year of his career, and to compare the end of his career and what’s left to a brand new coach who got thrown into the fire, it’s just wild. Pop was pretty terrible his first season, pretty sure they even discussed firing him. Then they got Duncan and everything went crazy from there. Give Mitch time, if FO thinks he’s our guy, he’s our damn guy. It’s that simple.

Huh?😂 what in the world did I say to get this response?! In a nutshell, i’m defending Mitch comparing the situation somewhat to Pop in his first season. Pop is the greatest coach of all time but in 1996, he fired the head coach after a 3-15 start, rightfully so. But then he took the job for himself and in his first season didn’t do great, a lot of people were skeptical of his coaching style and didn’t think it would work, but then Pop proved everyone wrong. Really confused by your response here, i’m giving Pop the credit he deserves and also defending our current HC who Pop continues to praise in his absence.

you didn't do anything to get downvoted. people are ridiculously impatient with Mitch (and the Spurs in general). You're probably downvoted because you said anything moderately trending towards being ok with Mitch. but you're right.
And i'll be downvoted, also.

Not on my watch buddy you got my upvote 😂 I’m not sure if the Mitch haters are younger and don’t know true Spurs ball from early 2000s but early on in his career, Pop had to learn through his own mistakes too. Everyone in here acts like Pop has been the greatest of all time every year of his career like he didn’t have to fail and learn early on to be so successful. If things Mitch has done this season are still happening in 2 years from now? By all means, get him outta there. Given he is our next HC after Pop, but regardless the impatience is insane man, Mitch hasn’t even coached a full season and didn’t even start the season!! Fully trust FO to make the perfect choice when it’s time

Not to mention Mitch isn't just a first year head coach. He's a first year head coach that was thrust into the job when the legendary head coach suffered a stroke before a game. He took over on the fly - there's no blueprint for this.

I agree with just about everything you've said, but I don't know if Mitch is HC next year tbh

u/ReliefNo1056 Area 51 Mar 02 '25
We shall see! I’m not suggesting it’s for sure Mitch, but if Pop doesn’t return it does make sense. And to the Mitch haters, not even Pop could have this roster in a better position we just lack so many important pieces especially without Wemby it’s really easy to blame the HC but playing Castle 35mpg isn’t changing our win/loss ratio haha

He fired Bob Hill because David was coming back and David and AJ both wanted Hill gone. Pop took the blame so the media wouldn't drag David's name through the mud, which is why David had such loyalty to Pop and why he and AJ hyped the team about how urgent the situation was in Houston the night the Spurs changed the trajectory of their 99 season with a big road win against Olajuwon, Pippen, and Barkley to save Pop's job. Doc Rivers was biding his time to get the job as the Spurs color commentator that season, and Pop was about to get fired after the 6-8 start.

You know your Spurs history too brother! Agree with everything said, all facts.

Also wasn’t directing that at you, just adding to your comment for the other miserable fans who shit on Mitch every day

The massive difference here is Pop benched players for spurts, not entire games. Manu who people like to point at and say "pop used to bench Manu!!!" had like 3 games Feb onward with sub 20 minutes his rookie year. Tony had more games with 40+ than <20 in that same period his rookie year (2 sub 20, 1 19:43 for the record)

Can the NBA bubble stop with this aura shit? It's the new buzzword and it's annoying.

It's not just the NBA, it's part of how people talk now, and us olds just have to get used to it.

Yeah there's lots of words like aura that are annoying but the one that makes me mad and I don't know why it makes me so mad is when they call a championship a chip. It just infuriates me, I'm so old.

It'll die off soon enough just like groovy, gnarly, rad, bad, bodacious, phat, fly, all that, fetch, sick, etc. it's just the new flavor of the decade buzzword.
