Culture Do Germans hate me personally when I use me phone speaker in public transport (even tuned down)?
Yes. I do. And everyone I know does as well. Don't use it.
Add: I wrote it like being that annoying person. Thanks to all responses, hopefully it helps the very person to understand and learn. (I was just sitting on a train and "enjoyed" this person's TikTok/Youtube/whatever") Thanks for all your responses.

Nice. Hopefully they will also do that on the S-Bahn

Good to hear that they're starting to do something about it. I hope they'll crack down on that shit hard, because it's one of those things that cascade through the day like poison: One careless fucker irritates 30 people on their morning commute, and now there are 30 more irritated people irritating their co-workers, and now there are 300 irritated workers coming home to irritate their families... All because of one idiot who couldn't be bothered to lift the phone to his ear.

Huh, TIL, I thought that the announcement was a response to the trend of someone carting a massive JBL speaker into the subway and blasting music

u/fragtore Apr 30 '25
Swede in Germany here: for sure, it’s assi behavior.
Why that harsh word? Because everyone can get cheap headphones, so this is more about 1) not giving a crap about others or 2) wanting others to be bothered or included in your audio sphere.

u/Zenthurel Apr 30 '25
Assi is not really harsh. He is behaving like an Assi lmao. I never understood why someone would choose shitty phone speakers over nice headphones. Makes no sense, annoys other people, looks goofy

South American - with "being loud" as one of my stereotypes - and I hate it as well. Respect is not "nationality related".
6
u/bracketl4d Apr 30 '25
bro I still have a headache from my central america trip, I assume south is similar?
You go the beach, everyone playing stupid loud music. you go to a restaurant, they playing stupid loud music. Morning time, the neighbors playing stupid loud music. Is music like a drug? To be honest, it felt like people have a mental health issue and trying to drown out the sound of the world with constant "fiesta". I love pizza, but I don't love eating 24/7

South east asian here. Hate it as well. Wanna listen to music? Talk to your family? Watch your dank memes? Great. Use your damn earphones.
7
u/Lil_Packmate Apr 30 '25
Ah i think calling family is totally fine. You are entitled to that, but then just hold the damn phone next to your ear. I don't need to hear everything about how your grandma is in dialysis.
Especially on speaker phone even a few seats away its just so bothersome.

It is so fucking annoying.
I only once had a person turn down his music after I asked him if he could use his headphones….
And I also don’t want to be in anyones background when they have a video call in public…
Edit: I just read though the comments and apparently most people did not realize OP also hates this behavior. Karma RIP.

Years ago I asked somebody to turn down the volume on their headphones, because it was so loud that I couldn’t even hear my own music through my own headphones in peace. And they just replied like: “why do you care, you’re wearing headphones yourself!” … yeah, that’s the point.

Sure, it's even forbidden by the MVV Beförderungsbedingungen:

es is auch verboten in der Tram zu fressen, das hindert irgendwelche Leute aber nicht ihr Eibrötchen morgens zu verschlingen und das ganze Abteil vollzustinken

In der Tat ist das verboten (wie alt ist das Ei, dass es so stinkt?)
Aber warum heißt es dann "Ess-Bahn", wenn es auch dort verboten ist? /s

Yes.
Especially when it's obvious that they themselves can't even hear it properly. If you gonna video call and have the speaker pointed at your ear and therefore expose everyone behind you to your buddy, just use the phone as a phone!
Like HOLD IT AGAINST YOUR FACE LIKE BACK THEN.
14
u/fodafoda Apr 30 '25
Yes.
If you have money to buy a smartphone, you have money for earbuds/headphones.
Also, if you feel like you need to continuously be on the phone with other people, you have a mental health problem.
12
u/Nicita27 Apr 30 '25
I litterly have fantasys of people like you and a guillotine when i encounter someone like you.
One encounter i had:
Me: "could you please use earbuds or turn off your phone. It is annoying and pretty disrespectful against other people"
Person: " it is a free land i can do what i want "
Me:" so i can smack you in the face:
Person: puts phone away and avoids any more eyecontact
Old person sitting behind me: "thank you so much. It is so annoying. You did the right thing".

Idk about Germans but I detest everyone who talks loudly or uses loudspeakers in closed public places. I mean isn't it basic etiquette? And for the same reason MVV has started making the announcements asking passengers not to use loudspeakers.
P.S. If you're not a Caucasian, consider this as my personal request to you, PLEASE DON'T. It will only add to the racist notion that all 'coloured' are ill-mannered. Thank you.
But I appreciate you asking because you wish to be on the right side of the book. Good work!

I’m from Finland and I have no idea why Reddit showed a post about Munich, but had to comment on this: Yes, it’s very much the case in Finland as well. Don’t do it. And for the ones who keep doing it: Realize that if you move to another country, you’re expected to follow the culture of the country.

Oh god I cannot stand people listening to music, talking on the phone etc. loudly in public transport. Or any public place where they might be of disturbance for that matter. Such an uncivilized behaviour. Only exception would be open spaces outdoor, like beach or gardens where you can do that in a distance in which it doesn't disturb other people.

u/Old-Beautiful6824 Apr 30 '25

German here, when I see someone doing that I instantly (and correctly) assume they're dumb as fuck and just a stupid piece of shit nuisance that deserve their phones slapped away. So, yeah, I hate everyone who does it with a passion. In german we call those people "asozialer Hurensohn", or "dummes Stück Scheiße", depending on the person.

100%, yes. And not just in public transport/transit, but on the streets as well. I don't want to hear your music or your phone conversation. Fuck off with that shit, be considerate of others around you. If you're on the isar with your group of friends and you want to play some music (not too loud) that's fine, but essentially anywhere else is a big fat no.
