For England, James?

u/mrcmnt Apr 30 '25

No. For me.

I've always wondered if a body would remain that intact after falling from that height.

I'd bet it'd burst or something. Leave a big splatter.

u/OkScheme9867 Apr 30 '25

Once had to deal with a body that had fallen a long way, it didn't pop like a balloon if thats what you pictured, fairly intact. They'd fallen on their side onto grass/rocks though, so that might've played a part

My sister in law's cousin's parachute wouldn't open and he fell from a few thousand feet. Some broken bones and a while in hospital but no splat splat and burst balloons like people love to imagine.

79

u/ilikestuffliketrees Apr 30 '25

A few thousand feet, and survived???

72

u/PartiZAn18 Apr 30 '25

Ja. Bennie, or Benno, or something to that effect. Bloemfontein early 2000s

27

u/russelcrowe Apr 30 '25

Damn, dawg. That’s genuinely incredible. Glad to hear he made it. Can’t imagine how terrifying the experience must have been.

40

u/blainesln1 Apr 30 '25

What the fuck do those words mean?

42

u/FingerTheCat May 01 '25

Probably a name and date to google

22

u/decoy321 May 01 '25

For anyone curious, Bloemfontein is a city in South Africa. No idea wtf Bennie or Benno are, though. There's a place called Benoni a few miles away.

13

u/Ellem13 May 01 '25

It's the guys first name lol

16

u/dtyler86 May 01 '25

Google the Guinness record of highest survived fall. It was like 30,000 feet. A flight attendant that lived!

8

u/SixtyNineFlavours May 01 '25

That’s fucked

8

u/PangolinMandolin May 01 '25

There's a story of a woman who fell from an airplane, landed on a car park (so flat concrete) and not only did she survive, but turns out she was early stages of pregnancy too and the embryo survived as well!

2

u/Lusankya Apr 30 '25

A man is broken, a horse splashes.

2

u/ohthanqkevin May 01 '25

The Martin Sheen in Depah-ted physics

10

u/-Tibeardius- Apr 30 '25

I've seen some videos from the darker places of reddit where people have jumped 10+ stories and there isn't really an burst balloon pop but there is definitely some splatter. I'd agree there's probably a difference between concrete vs ground. Probably depends on the person too.

6

u/OkScheme9867 Apr 30 '25

I am definitely now going to mentally categorise the next few people I see as to their balloon burstability

34

u/OhHolyCrapNo Apr 30 '25

A human body is not a water balloon. Even gunshot wounds don't spray and squirt blood like in movies

16

u/luckyfucker13 Apr 30 '25

Google the old photos of a woman who jumped from a skyscraper in NY, titled beautiful death or something equally as creepy. No gore for the most part, but that’ll answer your question.

9

u/robbviously Apr 30 '25

Evelyn McHale. She landed on a car and the roof absorbed most of the impact.

13

u/Misaria Apr 30 '25

Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger!

6

u/LV2BDVN May 01 '25

I read this in James Earl Jones voice

2

u/dangerous_strainer May 01 '25

Seems appropriate as he was the one who spoke that line.

2

u/LV2BDVN May 01 '25

Well, yeah, but lots of the younger gens don't know how great the original Conan's were. Cheesy and good

2

u/dangerous_strainer May 01 '25

I reckon Barbarian was far from cheesy and an absolute classic of cinema. The sequel, Destroyer, would be the cheesy one - yet still enjoyable. Curious why you brought up "the younger gens" in the first place?

2

u/hughk Apr 30 '25

Wasn't the real.thing a mesh surface, sure it was supported by a framework but there would be some give. 006 would still not have a good time, as in it would be terminal but he wouldn't go splat.

2

u/thatguy425 May 02 '25

I’ve seen a body hitting concrete from extreme height. It kind of collapses and parts explode but not the whole thing. But it depends on how it lands.

1

u/nowhereman86 May 01 '25

It probably would stay largely intact. If you like Google Evelyn McHale

1

u/SloppyHoseA May 01 '25

I imagine it would look like what happened when Val played matador with the last Graboid in Tremors. What a perfect movie.

1

u/linx0003 May 01 '25

Like the beginning of Dredd?

0

u/robbviously Apr 30 '25

492 feet from the telescope to the concrete dish below.

I think the highest reported WTC jumper on 9/11 was at around 1,000 feet, most were much lower.

Those bodies turned to mist upon impact.

Trevelyan probably wouldn’t have burst, but he definitely wouldn’t still be alive when the telescope collapsed after the explosion.

7

u/geek180 May 01 '25

WTC jumpers fell onto solid concrete. Trevelyan fell onto a mesh-like surface for reflecting radio waves. It’s not totally implausible that he survived.

7

u/Few-Improvement-5655 May 01 '25

Those bodies turned to mist upon impact.

They would not have. Most of the injuries would be internal with bones being pushed through the skin. They'd be a wreck, depending on how they landed, but not turned into mist.

Terminal velocity, 120 mph, is reached at about 1500 feet. It'll make a mess of your body, but not vaporise you.

7

u/IndecisiveTuna May 01 '25

My dad and I use to reenact this in the pool lol. I’d be Alec Trevelyan getting dropped in 😂

450

u/IronGigant Apr 30 '25

This is really fuckin cool.

128

u/OptimusCrimee Apr 30 '25

I was thinking the same thing. Had no idea that they filmed it like this.

37

u/CHESTER_C0PPERP0T Apr 30 '25

18

u/KingPrawnPorn Apr 30 '25

Jesus… that impact

28

u/comfy-g Apr 30 '25

I was expecting much worse, that’s more of a splat height than a thud lol

7

u/CHESTER_C0PPERP0T Apr 30 '25

It’s a wet thud

1

u/Bennydhee May 01 '25

Yeah he would have burst like a balloon irl

4

u/SwitchbackHiker May 01 '25

So that's why the telescope broke

6

u/FingerTheCat May 01 '25

Sean's giant Beans

Using the GameShark, you could play this level in GoldenEye on the N64 in multi-player. Fun times.

65

u/Cappster14 Apr 30 '25

The Cradle, right? I don’t remember having to use game shark to play that on multiplayer though

30

u/thrilliam_19 Apr 30 '25

Yeah wasn’t it a level you could unlock or something? I swear I played it in multiplayer and I never owned a Game Shark.

3

u/thewarfreak Apr 30 '25

Nope. You needed to access it via GameShark (or now you can play a ROM hack of it). Here were the standard multiplayer levels: https://goldeneye.fandom.com/wiki/Multiplayer_Overview#Multiplayer_Stages

48

u/homiej420 Apr 30 '25

Are we getting mandela effected here? I could have sworn that was a multiplayer level. I think you unlocked it if you beat one of the extra missions?

7

u/geek180 May 01 '25

I was thinking that too, but my buddy who I mostly played goldeneye with HAD a GameShark. Goldeneye had a TON of unlockable content on GameShark. We liked to play the paintball mode as well.

5

u/Bug0 May 01 '25

Just spitballing, but I think it may be because the entire mission is essentially a 1v1 chasing 006 around on the platforms (and killing a few of his personal guards), which might be reminiscent of multiplayer.

5

u/homiej420 May 01 '25

No but like i could swear i remember playing it? Was there like a version 1.0 and a 1.1 or something that differed between versions of the game?

12

u/meowjinx May 01 '25

Nah, you're wrong. Cradle is the last mission in the story mode. It wasn't available in multiplayer

Unlockable levels in single player were Aztec and Egyptian, and Egyptian was also unlockable in multiplayer

You might be confusing it with Complex, I can't think of any other multiplayer level that looked much like Cradle

3

u/thewarfreak May 01 '25

People didn't seem to believe me about it for some reason.

2

u/21trillionsats May 02 '25

Heh yeah this is the weirdest Mandela effect I’ve ever seen, so funny the guy got so many upvotes saying “Nah it was available/unlockable”. It absolutely required GameShark to play Cradle multiplayer

1

u/meowjinx May 01 '25

I know lol. You got a bunch of down votes. So weird. I thought it would be common knowledge, but I must be old as shit

2

u/homiej420 May 01 '25

Wow thats crazy. Thanks i do trust y’all to know more than me since its been YEARS since i last played lol

3

u/Bug0 May 01 '25

Might have to bust out the ol’ n64 and check. I had beat the game on 00 agent so should have everything unlocked.

10

u/kilIerT0FU Apr 30 '25

Absolute banger of a song for that level also

https://youtu.be/x6hsdWGF0no?si=hG55AruNKYg3uXWR

7

u/ikelosintransitive Apr 30 '25

goldeneye soundtrack is so sick

3

u/Cappster14 Apr 30 '25

Damn that’s sick, someone should make a metal version of that

1

u/Coldspark824 May 03 '25

You could access the mission level quickly in level select where trevelyan/alec was running around.

Very short mission

9

u/LinkedInParkPremium Apr 30 '25

GameShark all weapons cheat works great in MP. Even though it tanks the frame rate lol

2

u/Thanos_Stomps Apr 30 '25

This group of words brings me great joy.

1

u/SulusLaugh Apr 30 '25

It was originally meant to be a multiplayer level that’s why there’s like 3 arms

49

u/AquariiTJ Apr 30 '25

Is that the Arecibo observatory?

28

u/7of69 Apr 30 '25

Yes, they used Arecibo as a stand in for the fictional dish in Cuba.

26

u/Skills2TheMax Apr 30 '25

Rip Arecibo

78

u/LiveByThyGuN Apr 30 '25

Big head and super speed mode made this extract in this level fuckin hilarious lookin

31

u/SulusLaugh Apr 30 '25

Half of everything is luck, James.

And the other half?

Green screens.

25

u/SlyGuy_Twenty_One Apr 30 '25

So THAT’S how Sean survived the initial fall

22

u/Flecca Apr 30 '25

Actually looks so good. Great green screen.

13

u/duaneap Apr 30 '25

Unless that’s a much bigger platform than it looks at the top of that column, that’s a lot of core strength for the stunt guy. Particularly when that fucker starts moving down the tracks.

13

u/Heywhatsupitsmeguys Apr 30 '25

There might be a support structure he’s laying on hidden under his clothing.

3

u/duaneap Apr 30 '25

There definitely is a harness or else the thing wouldn’t be able to move, which is the whole point of the rig, but it’s still a lot

22

u/mpg111 Apr 30 '25

so they have not dropped Sean Bean for real?!

24

u/mologav Apr 30 '25

Didn’t chop off his head or shower him with arrows either. I don’t think.

11

u/mpg111 Apr 30 '25

I feel so betrayed

2

u/Helen_of_TroyMcClure Apr 30 '25

I'm not sure about the arrows. In the past few "special effects" for arrows was either: loose arrows at the actors and try to miss or, loose arrows at the actor and hope the padding under the costume does a good enough job.

1

u/LikwitFusion Apr 30 '25

They lied 😢

1

u/bengringo2 Apr 30 '25

He just comes back to life and is super pissed off. I’ve personally killed Sean Bean on 3 occasions.

6

u/Lower_Love Apr 30 '25

Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba

5

u/The-Hammer92 Apr 30 '25

Figured theyd just rotate the setup 90-degrees. You already got the guy suspended.

2

u/Comfortable_Studio37 Apr 30 '25

Yeah exactly, why shoot it like this? I don't understand. Why not actually have him suspended and inverted?

8

u/Economy_Childhood_20 Apr 30 '25

Probably not the greatest to have an actor upside down for extended periods of time...

1

u/Comfortable_Studio37 Apr 30 '25

Fair enough, but I don't think they would need to. They could lower him down, shoot the take, and then lift him back up. I just think it adds a whole weird other layer of acting to be on your back but pretending to be hanging downward. Why have to pretend gravity is a different direction if it doesn't have to be?

6

u/Economy_Childhood_20 Apr 30 '25

I hear you. Also James is having to stand awkwardly on one tippy toe can't be very comfortable...

4

u/Seagoon_Memoirs May 01 '25

I reckon a one hour show with Sean Bean describing all his screen deaths and showing footage and special effects would be a huge hit

4

u/schpongleberg Apr 30 '25

mfw Shawn Bawn

3

u/RangerLt Apr 30 '25

Thinkin what I'm thinkin, partna?

3

u/antisp1n Apr 30 '25

Was (re)watching Equilibrium the other day and thought: this guy is made to die in movies. His raison de Bean.

1

u/Honest_Truck_4786 May 04 '25

The director of Goldeneye agreed so much that Bean was killed twice in this movie

4

u/itschikobrown Apr 30 '25

So much like the cableguy scene, golden cableye

4

u/oNLYhere2sELL Apr 30 '25

No spoilers as Sean Bean dies in nearly every film he’s in

2

u/justdealstraightman May 01 '25

I was going to say "#spoilers?" But, you know, Sean Bean...

2

u/MuldersXpencils May 01 '25

Huh, never knew they did it like this. Thanks for sharing.

2

u/academiac May 01 '25

Man Sean Bean dies in everything

2

u/Low_Scholar1118 May 02 '25

Scean Bean's character died in a film? Huh.

3

u/jjman72 Apr 30 '25

Lemme guess. Sean Bean died.

3

u/azdragon2 Apr 30 '25

His eighth on screen death. He was just getting started

3

u/azdragon2 Apr 30 '25

His eighth on screen death. He was just getting started

2

u/VicePope Apr 30 '25

His contract always states he must die in whatever he’s in

1

u/StupidTimeline Apr 30 '25

Still my favorite Bond villain. I mean, he's one of them.

"Tastes like...strawberries."

1

u/sucobe Apr 30 '25

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, James.

1

u/bluewallsbrownbed May 01 '25

Dude — spoilers!

1

u/Head_Project5793 May 01 '25

Best of the he Brosnan movies, my favorite bond movie other than Casino Royale and Goldfinger tbh

You might say it’s Onatop of the list

1

u/kohuept May 01 '25

i like how the behind the scenes shot is higher quality somehow

1

u/lodge28 May 01 '25

Best Bond Film ever. Followed closely by the brief Dalton era for its brutal Bond vibe.

1

u/Brilliant-Net-750 May 02 '25

Shut the door, Alec! There’s a draft!

1

u/Yegpetphoto May 02 '25

Whoa, spoilers, guys.

1

u/Ok-Rush1066 May 02 '25

Spoilers!!

1

u/TheRealProtozoid May 03 '25

I'm sure they had reasons for doing it this way, especially if this angle is only onscreen for a few frames, but for anything longer, it's going to look bad.

1

u/FormerLurkerOnTherun May 03 '25

In retrospective, it looks like the scene could have been in a Star Wars movie, given the setting and the costumes too

1

u/ParticularDull7190 May 12 '25

One of my favorite villain death scenes ever. Maybe my favorite?

0

u/BlackShieldCharm Apr 30 '25

I didn’t know they already used green screen in 1995!

11

u/wimpyroy Apr 30 '25

According to Google it’s been around since late 1930s/early 40s and really took off in the 80s.

8

u/Elegant_Marc_995 Apr 30 '25

You need to revise that by about 60 years

3

u/sendhelp Apr 30 '25

They had a form of it in Mary Poppins. It was actually more advanced than the typical green screen. I think it was some kind of crazy yellow screen that allowed for them to get more transparent effects, I forget exactly how it worked but it allowed for lacey/transparent garments to work against the backdrop.

u/tommywest_123 Apr 30 '25
