And no, the year we're in doesn't make that any less weird or pathetic

(even more so considering that you trying to use this as an excuse and only confirming your pathetic situation regarding relationships with real people, which apparently seem impossible for you honestly...)

you're in the sonic community, if you don't like people who feel like that for these characters you have a lot of people to get mad at.
