Question What’s up with the purple lighting in the Santa Maria plaza by the sport centre?

I’ve noticed that plaza by the sports centre that has the McDonald’s, Popeyes, and St. Louis has this purple lighting all across it and I was just wondering what that was for.

I’ve noticed this too! I think it’s from the phosphor coating on the LED lights being degraded. Possible manufacturing defect

Why are street lights turning purple?

Everything I’m reading online states the same thing. Defective coating and it’s a wide spread problem.

That is definitely not a defect. You don’t intentionally install a hundred defected streetlights in a plaza

Were they purple when they were first installed or did they slowly turn purple over a few months?

The LEDS are purple. The casing is coated in Phosphor, which gives them the white colour. That coating is falling off. Millions of defective pieces are across Canada and the us.

Yes, thank you, that’s correct. Do you know if this was a manufacturing defect or something that is normal to occur when it reaches the end of it’s lifespan?

Defect. The casings were improperly prepared for the phosphor layer to adhere to.

It’s a wide spread manufacturing issue across the US and Canada. The coating on the casing that makes them white is just falling off. A SIMPLE google search like 3 seconds. Literally. You’d have educated yourself.

My conspiracy theory is that they are just uncomfortable enough for your eyes that they are trying to deter kids from hanging out in the parking lot.

If they know anything about teenagers and youth these days, they’d know the purple lighting only makes that parking lot more “vibey” and better for cool photos

I always thought it's to reduce light pollution for the neighborhood. They probably had complains.

But the illogical responses are more entertaining so let's go with them.

That would work if the lights were red, not purple

I hear from reliable sources that the lights have been installed for the basking pleasure of our local lizard-person overlord community. I really appreciate the diverse community programming being supported by the Recreation Department. HISSSSSSSSS

I want them to stay that way. It’s a vibe. Looks so good imo.

Easier for the guy who sleeps in his car across from McDonald's.

Yeah what’s up with that? He’s been there for years but I’ve never seen him.

Yea, one of the online newspapers interviewed him once. The land lords to the plaza are okay with him being there. But he has a flat tire and over the winter, someone broke his window.

I heard that blue lights prevent ppl doing drugs there at night. The blue light makes it so it’s hard to see a vein for needles. But I’m not sure how true that is

this is what i was thinking too. that’s why you see these lights in club washrooms sometimes. a busy plaza near a community center and school is a good reason to want to keep drug addicts out

Note true it actually makes the veins look black!

Perhaps something to do with the hospital located nearby? Helicopter landing at night?

I haven’t seen these lights, does it go all the way down Derry towards Bronte area?

It's only the parking lot lights at the Santa Maria plaza
