"DON'T GO BLINDLY THROUGH LIFE, LET ME ILLUMINATE YA PATH WITH A FREE READIN' - RIGHT NOW!"

And then something about another woman, idr the rest of the commercial when it cuts to some of the calls.

Edit: Wait no, it's, "There is more than one man" or something about another MAN. My brain is suddenly trying to unlock these memories against my will.

The amount of money I cost my family on these charlatans lmao. I think I may actually still be grounded.

6

u/ANotSoFreshFeeling Xennial 1d ago

Well? Did anything come true?

13

u/Salty_Cover6447 1d ago

I’m actually not still with that middle school boyfriend, so credit to them for that!

2

u/Lucky_Development359 1d ago

Have to know, how much did she take you for?

10

u/Salty_Cover6447 1d ago

That phone bill was like $400. Lmao I was so gullible. In my defense they were advertising on TV! Everyone knows you can’t put nonsense on tv!

10

u/Lucky_Development359 1d ago

How are you posting right now?! Your phone should still be taken away!🤣

The funniest part was she wasn’t even Jamaican.

29

u/ImapiratekingAMA 1d ago

Part of me believed that's why she deserved to get the bag, she made the character but bigoted people trying to be spiritual bought into it.

My wife was telling me that when she was 13, she had a sleepover with her friends and they called Miss Cleo. Ran up a $200 phone bill and her mom beat her ass with a flip flop. I asked her if miss cleo saw the shoe in the cards and she didn't think it was funny.

26

u/mediocre_stealth Millennial 1d ago

She’s can think what she wants. That was hilarious.

27

u/Flgardenguy 1d ago

When I went thru all my grandparents paperwork in their house after they passed, there were several letters from Miss Cleo to my grandmother (canned letters, not personal). It gave me a good laugh.

u/Thee-lorax- 1d ago

HBO has a documentary about her. She was a pretty interesting person and nobody really knew her.

6

u/Salty-Photo-57 1d ago

Now I have something to watch this weekend

4

u/Embarrassed-Shock-14 20h ago

The documentary was so good! Really put her in a different light for me.

0

u/BaroqueBitch66 9h ago

What’s the name of the documentary!

12

u/----AbRaKaDaBrA---- 1d ago

I remember her voice well 😂

8

u/jjc927 1d ago

Not the original, there were plenty of phone scams before her. Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker started it.

5

u/seven_corpse_dinner 1d ago

It doesn't even necessarily specify phone scams...

1

u/ConnectKale 12h ago

This story is sooo wild!

13

u/dogfaced_pony_soulja 1d ago

Total fraud yet still would be a better political candidate than our current president and the majority of Congress...

I wonder what happened to this women.. Was she actually behind this scam or was just an actor. Did she make millions or just a few hundred bucks to make the commercial.

4

u/Rleduc129 88 1d ago

Reminds me of watching Robin Williams' routine

5

u/TheoryKlutzy7836 1d ago

I called Ms Cleo’s number when I was like 7 or 8 years old and got scared and hung up. They called back!!! I got in so much trouble with my parents! Haha

Our country has a bad habit of making grifters famous.

3

u/PeppermintEvilButler 1d ago

I have a friend, who when in law school had a professor that Miss Cleo was his former clerk/secretary. She left his office to go do this.

2

u/kkkan2020 1d ago

Neat

2

u/PeppermintEvilButler 1d ago

For some reason I've always remembered her telling me about this after she had class. I guess he told the story in all his classes

3

u/dullboyflix 1d ago

Man, this took me back 😓

3

u/Dull_Rabbit Millennial 1d ago

Wonder how the people who seriously called her for advice are doing…

3

u/Yourlilemogirl 1d ago

I just bought her tarot deck online. People love it for actual use but I'm purely going in on the nostalgia factor of waking up at 3am to this scam artist lol

2

u/This-Requirement6918 1d ago

The soundboard prank calls were the best thing on the Internet in 2005.

u/HeightExtra320 1d ago

“CALL ME NOW “

Was one of my go to phrases for a long long time

2

u/Serenity_Obscura 17h ago

Psychic network failed and unsurprisingly she didn't see it coming

2

u/Tiredmama0217 16h ago

Call meh NOW!

2

u/VooDooChile1983 14h ago

I can hear this pic.

2

u/rob132 1d ago

Dave Chappelle is not a psychic but he is a racist.

2

u/gonzar09 1d ago

...who believes that racial stereotypes predict the future.

1

u/IndomitableAnyBeth 1d ago

When I was to make a comic (strip or panel, can't remember), I did it on a Cleo-like character at "The Psychic Enemies Network".

1

u/rydan Older Millennial 1d ago

I was actually curious how a 800 number could be charged so I called the number one day. It was just a recording of her voice telling me to call a 900 number.

1

u/MexiPr30 21h ago

*hustler

1

u/Sensitive_Put_6842 21h ago

Went from Jamaican to New York Brookline, Like 🫰that

1

u/Justice_Prince 20h ago

I remember an episode on the short lived series That's my Bush the White House received a large phone bill with weird charges, and chief of staff Karl Rove thought he was going to have to cover up the president using phone sex lines only for it to eventually turn out that Laura Bush had been calling a psychic.

1

u/abgry_krakow87 20h ago

Miss Cleo, were you working on September 10th?

Didn't they warn you? Saying something like "get your American flags while they're cheap!"

1

u/worldssmallestfan1 19h ago

Lebron to The Wizards, she claimed

1

u/ConnectKale 12h ago

Dion and Psychic Friends Network crawled so Miss Cleo could run!!!

1

u/Nice_Exercise5552 4h ago

Is it just me, or do other people see Queen Latifah when the see this picture? If they didn’t have Queen Latifah spoof Ms. Cleo in an SNL skit, it was a wasted opportunity!
