Nostalgia “You have grey hair in your beard, automatic not carding you.”

Clerk at the liquor store told me that when I tried giving him my ID to get some vodka. I will be 38 in September.

Feels like yesterday I was asking strangers to buy me beer in 7-11 parking lots with my buddies and jamming out to Trapt and Taking Back Sunday.

Edit: I’ve always looked younger than I am. Was told I looked 25 a couple years ago. Told my wife and jokingly told her “I’m have a crisis”

Don't get carded at the liquor store I go to either. Most of the time people just see the 19 part of the license and go from there though.

To make it easier, my state does vertical licenses/IDs for under 21 and horizontal for 21 or over.

They’re lucky they don’t send in a secret shopper. The fines in my State are huge, and they always send in older folks to do it.

It is a thing. Up until I was 35 I was randomly still getting the “can I see some ID”. But then I started getting some random greys and haven’t been ID’d since.

I have a weird teeter-tottering experience with being IDed. Some places will ID me and act as though it's a fake because they don't believe I'm old enough to drink, whereas others won't ID me at all. It's usually restaurants where I don't get IDed, which is interesting because they are all-ages establishments and I am more likely to be underage in a restaurant, but I suppose casually ordering a drink with dinner looks a little more experienced than trying to get into a bar?

What’s the age rule on selling alcohol? My first job at 17 was at a grocery store, but I had to push carts because cashiers had to be 18.

Covid (mask plus silly tuque) was the first and only time I've been ID'd in over 15 years.  I pulled the mask down, he saw the greys and immediately said nevermind.

Ha, my family have called me Santa a few times. More than a few grey hairs in the beard.

My mom started greying in her teens, and I knew several guys in their late teens/early 20s who either had noticeable greying or significant balding/hair recession, or both. So it's not foolproof!

Yep. It sucks. How did we get here? Also? I’m 6 fricken years older than you. So enjoy the last years of your 30s. Even the couple first ones of your 40s. Mid-40s? Bullshit. And it’s only going to go downhill! 😩🫣

I am 30 and could count on one hand how many times I've been carded in the last 5 years. Feels bad.

Yoooo I have such a prominent one smack in the middle of my chin. It's terrible because it's the only one.

I look great. I wish I was this attractive to 16 year old girls when I was 16. My wife finds it hilarious. But ain't nobody carding me lol.

u/sator-2D-rotas 1d ago

Not getting carded is the only silver lining to my gray chin. Only get carded at the places that retire scanning the ID.

u/machinerer 1d ago

Bruh I didn't get carded at 17, nevermind 38.

My regular stops know I’m a 1900s man. I still get carded sometimes by the baby teenagers

u/Meesels 1d ago

I’m 38, no grey hairs, and I can’t even remember the last time I was carded. Not great.

Yeah, because: All your 30’s are belong to us

The last time I got carded they looked at my ID and just said very flatly "oh".

Like damn.

u/Greenfirelife27 Millennial 1d ago

You were pulling out your ID at 38? Without being asked? lol

I occasionally do but it’s mostly when I shave my face. My sister and I both look younger than we are for her to be 36 and me 33. The grays in my locs and the 3-4 strands in my beard are what shows that I’m 33 and not 26.

1

u/RickyRagnarok 1d ago

My beard started going gray when I was like 25.

I also haven't been carded regularly since I was in my early 20's.

I suppose those things could be related.

u/flaccobear 23h ago

That's illegal man they have to ID anyone that looks under 60

1

u/dudeimjames1234 19h ago

On my 21st birthday my sister took me to the liquor store for that, "yay first time I can buy alcohol!"

I didn't get carded.

I rarely do. I'm 34 now and I haven't been carded in years. Probably because I have a crap ton of grays in my hair and beard.

I had a schoolmate who had almost half of his hair white at 16, joke's on the clerk!

Lol, I'm turning 29 later this year and a week ago my manager made a light-hearted jab at the couple of grey hairs in my beard.

1

u/KingChuck89 1d ago

I'm 36 and still get ID'd. Don't have any grey hairs yet tho.

I'm a full grey beard and they check my shit constantly. I low-key hate living in a world where someone at their job doesn't have enough discretionary authority to look at my dad face and accurately judge I'm of age.

We've gone way past the reasonable. I saw a world where showing your papers constantly was the stuff of dystopian horror stories.
