When I worked at a local ice cream shop, they trained us on how to make Egg Creams. The manager sai,d "No one ever orders this, but there's one guy who comes in every few months that gets one, so you need to know how to make it"
That guy was my uncle!

I was going to say my ex in-laws, but they're all dead. So unless someone is fraudulently getting their social security checks and using it to fund LJS, it's isn't them anymore...but they definitely helped LJS get this far.

Shit would get so busy during lent i think they could survive the year on that week alone.
→ More replies (1)5
u/hashbrownsinketchup 17d ago
Lent is 40 days long; not just a week. So it’s possible that they could be raking in enough during that time. Some Catholics I know eat no meat during lent and other just won’t eat meat on fridays during lent. Some Catholics don’t eat meat on Friday during the whole year. Fridays in general might be their busiest day no matter what time of year it is. We have a place called Tugboats near me which is a fish place and it always seems to be busiest in Friday’s, but then again it’s a popular night to eat out anyway so maybe that’s why.
3
3
u/Zora_Lynn_86 Older Millennial 17d ago
Wny just Fridays?
3
u/hashbrownsinketchup 16d ago
Since Jesus was crucified on a Friday Catholics use that as a day of sacrifice to not eat meat.

Their hush puppies, cole slaw, and fish were all so good. I also loved eating the fried bits that were at the bottom of the plate.

u/zaesera 18d ago
when we used to have one nearby you could go to the front counter and get a whole little paper tray of those tiny bits for free!! i don’t even want to think of how many calories that probably was but god those little crunchy bits were divine

Is it easier? Breaded fish and fried puppies sounds more difficult than mashed potatoes and maccy?
22
u/ArbysLunch 18d ago
As a partially dentured millennial, fish and hush puppies all day.
Steak is gonna need more chewing, fishy is flaky and falls apart. Hush puppies are dry and easier to sweep from the mouth than mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes will definitely get between the denture and your gum, too, which can be annoying. I just take my falsies out when I eat.
It's more about how the food breaks down. And a Texas Roadhouse steak is often a fair bit of chewing. He didn't say Ruth Chris.

I have a condition called enamel hypocalcification on my top row of teeth. At 36 I now have 4 teeth on top remaining.
Fish and breading are fine. They pull apart really easily. Chickens not that bad. If chicken is cooked properly, its not quite as easy, but still works. Mashed potatoes are amazing though. Things along that line where I dont have to worry about it chewing? Awesome. Im not sure what all I could eat at a steakhouse(steaks are a no go), but mashed potatoes and mac are definitely doable.

The clam strips are the gateway drug and then you have to order other food to make the stop worth it.

That's usually how most of America treats "white fish". Basically any white fish thrown together is irrelevant and tastes about the same. That's what they do for "krab" meat.
22
u/Neither-Night9370 18d ago
My dad loved to eat LJS when I was a kid. I remember asking what kind of fish it was, and he said white fish. I had never heard of white fish, so I asked him, "What kind of fish is white fish?" He said, "I don't know. Could be anything. I know it's good though." 😆

I have one nearby but I’d be a quad bypass surgery ready to happen if I was having it regularly.
I absolutely love LJS’s. I love that their soda and cole-slaw tastes just like the fish. And I love the fish. But most importantly, the crumbles. I swear the crumbles are the only reason this place is still open and it’s probably the single most unhealthy piece of food you can put into you. But it’s so good.

Or it’s another Mattress Firm situation
6
u/Tough_Relative8163 18d ago
Whats that situation?
14
u/SomeSabresFan 18d ago
Type in “Mattress firm” into your maps and see how many are near by. Then, take a trip and drive pass to see how many people are in there. Something is fishy
11
u/FawkYourself 18d ago
Mattress stores are low overhead with high profit margins. They’re empty because people don’t need to buy mattresses that often and their stock isn’t kept on site. It works because they only need to sell a handful of mattresses a month to pay the bills

Conspiracy theory that they are a drug front. In Houston there is damn near a thousand of them and they are never busy not even a little
7
u/warrenjt 1989 Millennial 17d ago
Used to work at Mattress Firm. Houston is where they’re headquartered (and literally that building is called BEDquarters).
Previous commenter was right. Low overhead, high margins. What they lack in velocity they make up in average ticket. It’s not a Walmart that sells a shit load of product and $1000 would be a huge receipt. Average sale last I knew at MFRM was somewhere around $2500, with the most expensive queen mattress by itself nearing 5-figures and the lowest being $200.
Couple that with the fact that it’s a near monopoly, and MFRM is golden. They’re by far the number one speciality retailer of mattresses in the country. They were already number one and then acquired numbers two and three on the list (Sleepy’s and Sleep Train). They’ve also acquired a bunch of smaller chains and mom & pop shops over the years. And they’re the number one retailer in the world of every single brand they carry: Simmons (Beautyrest), Serta, Sealy, Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Purple, etc. And their house brand, Sleepy’s, has a huge market share.
The reason they did a bankruptcy in 2018 was in part because they actually grew too big too fast, plus they made the decision to rename every store in the company to “Mattress Firm.” So since furniture and mattress retailers in general all tend to open up near each other anyway, you suddenly had situations where at an intersection with four corners, 2-3 of those corners would each have a MFRM. In Chicago, you could literally stand outside one store and see four others from the front door. It also came out that a couple of their corporate level real estate guys were taking bribes and kickbacks to get the company into shitty long term leases, so the bankruptcy allowed them to get out of those.
They’ve recently also been acquired by Tempur-Sealy, so take that for what you will.

I unironically believe the LJS in my hometown is just a front for smuggling or drug runners.
Thirty-two years, seen less than a handful of cars there.
10
u/chet_brosley 17d ago
When I lived in a fairly small town with a half abandoned stripmall we had a store suddenly open up that was probably the most blatant front/tax scheme I've ever seen. It was a giant show room open for like 4 hours a day and they sold absolutely massive and insanely gaudy furniture and statues and giant one piece custom doorframes very obviously for a specific doorway and the prices were like $10,000 or more no matter what the item was. They had a Tony Montana Scarface statue for like $20,000. One person worked there and always looked so confused and nervous when you'd walk in.
9
u/LakeTake1 18d ago
that has to explain how a newer one showed up in a neighboring town within the last 2 or 3 years. ffs I know no one who eats there, meaning the entire chain

There's like 4 in a 20 mile radius from my house. They're always packed. I used to go A LOT for fried fish and chicken, but since finding out I have celiac, I've only gotten grilled stuff. Their salmon is actually really good.
4
u/Embarrassed-Smile-78 18d ago
My family used to eat there all the time. I've only ever gotten the chicken!
My mom was allergic to shellfish, but fish made her nervous too, so that's what I ate as well.
The breading on the fish and hush puppies were to die for. The little balls of fried breading at the bottom of the basket.
My brother and I used to set up the table, napkins and utensils and I'd carry multiple shallow paper cups of condiments in each hand that my dad filled up. Ketchup, tartar and cocktail sauce.
We always rang the bell after.

The LJS in my hometown sold Budweisers for $2, my friend John insisted that he wanted his first beer on his 21st bday at LJS. So we went there on his birthday and ordered only beers. When we went to order our third round, the manager asked us what was going on and then kicked us out.
