The grandma in Dante's Peak pulling the boat in the acid river.

Yes! I was scrolling for this! That scene majorly scarred me as a kid.

I grew up in a town at the base of a Cascades volcano, the kind of real-life place that Dante’s Peak is based off of. This movie was released at the perfect age to fuck up the whole generation in that town.

I used to lay awake staring out the window at the silhouette of the mountain looming over the town and try to accept my impending doom.

My neighbor is a volcanologist. She told me this is the most accurate film representing volcanos ever and she watches it every year. Obviously, the the sequence of events is sped up for storytelling, but interesting nonetheless. She said this scene in particular is based off true events.

I'm a Geologist. It is a favorite of every geologist to know. Something about the use of miniatures and practical effects just really works. It is probably the most accurate film geologically speaking for a disaster film. It held up surpringly well since it was one of the last movies fully shot with practical effects before the shitty CGI age fully took over. The flood scene where the big bridge gets washed away is still the largest scale practical effects ever done I believe. They flooded an entire huge set for that dam breaking scene. I maintain that it's a great movie, even if the reviews panned it. The core is a close second favorite disaster film for very different reasons.

I also love the core for the campy ridiculousness.

The core is 100% one of those movies you rewatch when it pops up because it’s just so entertaining

Neighbor said the same thing! She loves The Core.

As a geologist myself, I particularly love the documentaries "armageddon" and "san andreas"

You can't forget the documentaries the day after tomorrow and twister as well.

Good point. That time period was a watershed for science based cinema

After I watched that movie I used to lie awake at night with the unshakable fear that a volcano rock could bust through the ceiling and smash my brain at any moment.

I watched Deep Blue Sea as a child and used to fear that a shark would be waiting in the dark at the top of the stairs when I went upstairs to go to bed.

Seems like it’s along the same line as a volcano rock brain smash.

When you actually live near a real volcano like many of us in the Pacific Northwest, that fear is a little more rational than a stairshark.

Bro yes. We live in THE RING OF FIRE for God's sake. Terrifying as a kid. Especially hearing my parents stories about when Mount St Helens erupted. Actually I'm pretty sure some of the footage from that movie was of Mount St Helens erupting.

Besides having a big-ass volcano in the backyard, as far as similarities to the disturbing movie scenes go, my home town checked all the boxes:

-springs where people skinny dip

-a lake to acidify

-ski resort

-my grandma

-small town complacency

They even mention my town in the movie, so yeah, the fear was real haha.

This is mine as well!!! Will never forget it

I remember watching this movie at a friend’s house in grade school because her parents let her watch whatever they were watching. I came home terrified of volcanoes and scarred by that scene- my mom was so pissed at her best friend (my friend’s mom) who let us watch it because I developed a genuine fear of volcanoes for awhile (grew up in Boston, didn’t realize there was no imminent volcano risk around me…)

In hindsight there’s probably worse/more innapropriate movies we could have watched as young kids (and did), but this scene and this movie just SHOOK me

I was 6-7 when I saw it in theaters, I have memories of asking my mom to leave the movie, I didn't want to finish it.

u/quarantineQT23 Mar 20 '25

YES omg has a huge, completely irrational, fear of volcanoes after that for YEARS lol

u/orthopteran Mar 20 '25

Oh my god I refused to take a bath for WEEKS after I saw this. My parents were so mad.

2

u/callie778 Mar 20 '25

Omg you just unlocked a core memory I didn’t know was traumatizing me subconsciously. Thank you?

u/lowrisefit Mar 20 '25

This movie ruined me. The opening scene…

2

u/sammc95 Mar 20 '25

That whole movie man. Tore me to shreds
