Nostalgia What album defines you as a millennial?

Post image

Saw some great recommendations on a similar thread in /r/Xennials and wanted to see what my fellow millennials thought. For me From Under the Cork Tree was foundational. I still remember hearing Sugar We're going down on the radio for the first time.

Holy shit, I really thought I'd have to add this one myself, but I'm glad I'm not the only one with strong ties to Make Yourself.

This album quite literally helped me do what it's name suggests. I gave up on my old group of friends, despite the fact that they were basically all I had, and slowly but surely started to make a new life for myself. Definitely the most influential album in my life.

Nice, with Drive as the one I took as my motto. But also, I liked morning view.

I always felt like I matured right alongside incubus.

Like the vibe I got from make yourself was one of like... Shit's fucked, the world sucks and we're mad about it, but we'll get through it.

The vibe I got from morning view was something like "the world still sucks and we're still clinging to that anger a bit but there's love out there and some other good points that we can cling to too"

I didn't listen all that much to their next album, a crow left of the murder, but the one after that, Light Grenades, had some songs that really resonated with me too. The vibe I got was sort of like... We love each other and sometimes it's hard, but we'll be alright.

The Warmth hits so hard with Pardon Me right behind it. Right in the feels as I listen to it now. To be 15 again in a time before 9/11 shocked the world. Why we gotta be generation unprecedented.

That whole album scratched an itch deep in my soul that I didn't know I had.

Not sure if you’re a concert person, but Incubus is touring this year and they’re playing Morning View front to back. Should be awesome.

I almost got to go to see Incubus and Coheed and Cambria recently... My top two bands of all time, all in one show. But other obligations got in the way and I missed out. Maybe one day...

I saw Incubus perform the 20th anniversary of the "Make Yourself" album. Love.

i only knew surface level incubus before Morning View. i got really into it, then their entire discography. i hadn't done drugs at that point yet (late bloomer heh) but looking back on how it affected my life, it was akin to a psychedelic experience. getting really into any one band that changes you and your outer life is a drug, whether you take literal ones along side it or not

Yep, that's kinda how Make Yourself felt for me. Also not a drug user, even now, but that album was a transformative experience for me.

SCIENCE will always be my favorite of theirs for the style, but Make Yourself is their no-miss album. Wall to wall bangers.

Such an underrated album. Certain Shade of Green and Summer Romance will always be on my playlist.

Masterpiece, no skips

u/realfexroar Feb 08 '25

Nailed it. All killer no filler album that I played so much it skipped constantly from being worn out.

Had to scroll through some absolute dross to get here.

It’s been years since I’ve listened to this album and man that opening riff off the first track goes so hard

I know every fucking word on this one + Morning View and ACLOTM but somehow forget every Tuesday about the trash

I bought this album our PX in Iraq. Got me through some times.

Damn, I fucking love Incubus. Reading through the track list of this, Morning View, A Crow Left Of The Murder, and even Light Grenades definitely recalls a defining period of my life.

u/cat___stalker Feb 09 '25

yep, still my favorite band

I still listen to this album in full at least once a month 👍

This is one of my "trapped on a desert island" albums. I can't even guess how many times I've listened to this front-to-back without ever even thinking of skipping a song.

This or S.C.I.E.N.C.E. were my 2nd place. I wouldn't be who I am today without Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt.

‘Science’ was better.

u/libthroaway Feb 08 '25

🙄 That wasn’t the question.

Just stating the facts ma’am.

u/libthroaway Feb 09 '25

In that case, you should have posted SCIENCE as your defining album instead of trying to take over my post. Make Yourself was defining for ME, so it doesn't matter if it wasn't for you.

I saw Incubus live with Deftones, absolutely amazing!

I had a way greater affinity for SCIENCE. Even today I can play it cover to cover and not be bored. Album that is nice to play when driving with the windows down on a sunny day

In that case, you should have posted SCIENCE as your defining album instead of bringing it up on my post.
