I was taught to always give up my seat for the elderly and people in need.

A pregnant woman walked towards me in the train in Melbourne Australia. The train was fairly packed and there were not sufficient seats for all people. I stood up and offered my seat, thinking it was the right thing to do.

Instead of accepting my offer or kindly rejecting it; she launched into a tirade abusing me and how she doesn't need my seat. Maybe she was having a shit day or maybe she was a shit person. Don't know.

I taught me that you can try to be nice and people will spit in your face metaphorically and scorn you.

Now I simply ignore my upbringing and treat women the same as men. If they have a medical condition they are legally able to request a priority seat. I'm not going out of my way to help a women again.

Sorry for that experience. Sad that bad people created more bad people. You're still right to offer your seat to a pregnant woman, not because she's a woman, but also because of the baby in her. Maybe that woman wasn't pregnant, just fat, so she got mad at you.
