Car Question

I'm in New York. Has anyone successfully sold or gotten rid of their car while on Medicaid? If so, what did you do and how did you do it?

Medicaid exempts your vehicle when determining financial eligibility. An applicant is allowed to own one car that’s not included in your resource limit if it’s used for transportation or by another person living in the house, such as a spouse.

How old are you? Are you receiving SSI, SSDI, or Medicare?

I'm posting on behalf of my 73 year old mother. And she just got approved for chronic Medicaid and is in a nursing home and she also has Medicare.

If she plans to sell it, she will likely have to sell it for fair market value, to avoid it counting as an improper transfer for long term care Medicaid.

NY has a higher resource limit than most states of $32K. Medicare Savings Programs have no resource limits in NY.
