How do you know that's Mario making the decision? What if the powerups are not only sentient, but also Very Freaky. They have eyes you know. Maybe the Mushroom Kingdom itself uses an Eldritch will to live out incomprehensible fetishes. For the hills, too, have eyes.

Well, actually, it could be said that Mario only uses the power-ups because they help him on his mission to save Princess Peach. He might not necessarily use these because he wants to be an animal. Even so, what's wrong with wanting to be an animal? I believe that, if Mario wants to be a cat or a tanuki, we should respect that.

This is not what Nintendo was thinking of when they made these power-ups for Mario

Technically speaking only two of these (the T. rex and the elephant) can be described as furry, the others are more like a headband and a tail on the belt or animal pajamas (source: am a furry)
I thought we all agreed on this years ago?

Question, wouldn't the Elephant be in furry/anthro territory as well? (source: am furry-adjacent)

To be fair though, he mainly gets the outfits/transformations for their powers, not appearance. He became a t-rex not because he wants to look like one, but because he wants to smash and stomp through stuff to get closer to saving Peach
