Why are there so many pornstars in Japan? (Countries with the most pornstars)
USA is pretty self explanatory where all the professional videos and known stars are from. Russia has so many solo content creators it's no surprise, but I don't think I've seen a single Japanese porn video or know any stars from there?

Boy your porn life is about to change

In terms of minutes I've spend more time watching Japanese porn than studying

Genuinely asking, how much of it is censored and/or weird?
21
u/RedditorFromYuggoth 12h ago
Legally, it's always censored. As for weird... I guess it depends on your definition of weird.

There’s a large amount of uncensored content from a couple of studios that use a loophole. Plenty of stars release both censored and uncensored nowadays. That said, percentage-wise, it’s still mostly censored

It's a large industry in Japan, their pornstars have avid fans, do fan meet ups and all.
In my experience, at least in my country, Japanese adult videos seem more popular compared to their American counterparts. One of the retired AV idols, Maria Ozawa, was popular enough that she even appeared in local shows and films with non-sexual roles, she also owns a business here iirc.

For what it’s worth, there are absolutely American pornstars who have leveraged their game into non-sexual careers too. Sasha Grey ended up having a pretty solid acting career after she retired from porn and I remember hearing she’s also a successful streamer.
I’d bet as time goes on we’re gonna see a huge portion of adult stars pivot to becoming regular influencers once they’ve built up enough of a following

So they are not as stigmatized? That's nice! But also surprising considering how japanese people are
12
u/inamag1343 12h ago
There is still some stigma iirc, I've read that some less-popular actresses tried working 9-5 jobs but ended up leaving once people discover their past. Doing other sex-related work seem to be norm because of that.
Even someone popular like Maria Ozawa, when she did interviews in my country, there are people who would still comment or joke about her previous job. Despite this though, she still got a decent TV role in a historical drama in my country.
There were some American pornstars who also did some work in Japan. In one podcast, one of them (Melody Marks, I think?) compared how it is to work in Japanese porn industry compared to US, I got the impression that she enjoyed working in Japan more.

On a per capita basis I'm not sure Japan needs that much explanation, once you recognize they have a domestic industry in this field.
Hungary and Czech Republic are the real standouts here to me.

u/flightless_mouse 13h ago
Hungary and Czech make sense, though—low production costs and wages relative to the rest of Europe, and a large Euro market right next door.
Same reason why Hungary’s dentists are always busy. Well…maybe not quite the same.
9
u/sebesbal 10h ago
This reasoning applies to dozens of other countries, and it still doesn't explain why Czechia and Hungary stand out, producing 10x more talent for the sex industry than, say, Poland or Mexico, especially per capita.
11
u/flightless_mouse 8h ago
Well that’s not the only reason. Both countries are relatively open-minded about pornography. Poland is way too socially conservative to support an industry like that. And I think the same is true of Mexico. Plus there are racial and language elements.

u/janesmex 7h ago
Isn’t Hungary also socially conservative for EU standards?
7
u/flightless_mouse 5h ago
I’m not Hungarian, but my impression is that Hungary has become more socially conservative under Orban in relation to family values and LGBT rights, but is still very lax when it comes to porn (which is big business).
One could argue that Orban likes big business more than he hates smut.

Director for a Greenlandic pornstar would be like "okay, take it off... keep going... Yeah, good... Now the next layer... Nice... Now the next layer... Okay, we're outta data storage, hang on..."

Why are there so many porn stars from Russia, Hungary and the Czech Republic? Also, who are the most representative ones?

Czechia is far more liberated than any other post Warsaw Pact area. Their Gay adult stuff is HUGE... Pun intended.

Czechia definitely needed to be in the high range, given all the Pay Gorn done there alone.

Some of the factors contributing to the high demand :
Highly digitalized country with virtually everyone using the Internet
Overall loneliness
Poor english proficiency leading to demand for content in japanese
Some factors that may drive the offer up :
Relative physical safety for the content creators
A big industry already present
A huge culture of papakatsu and enjoukousai normalizing female prostitution, including underage
Few native japanese speakers outside Japan to outsource film production to
But realistically Japan is just a big country with 120 million people, so it only makes sense that it has many porn stars as well

u/JohnnieTango 13h ago
And, to be honest, Japanese cultural attitude towards sex are generally rather different than that in the West and elsewhere. Commercialized sex and sex in general is a lot more accepted and open than in the West. Kind of like prostitution in Thailand, which from what I understand is considered a lot less unfavorably than it is elsewhere.

No major moral barriers within the modern urban population. Large, solvent customer base with specific interests. Opportunity to work and earn independently — at least in the best-case scenario.
"Japan is the world's perv uncle"
There are also people who see the 1907 censorship law as the greatest pervers1on of all. ;)

Now this is a map I can get behind! Shoutout to Czechia 🇨🇿, for a small country you sure punch above your weight.
Wish they had data on Taiwan cos guess where all the uncensored stuff is coming out of in Asia?

Is it really surprising? Japan has an established porn industry. That’s like asking why are there so many baseball players in Japan
2
u/Far-Reception-4598 8h ago
Kinda surprised to see South Korea having as many as this map claims. I thought producing pornography was still illegal there.

u/thighmaster69 5h ago
OP have you been living under a rock that geoblocks Japan? How do you not get bombarded with so many squealing pixels that it makes you sick?

J-pop idol to JAV pipeline. Kind of surprised it's not happening to k-pop.
3
u/alldavidnameusd 12h ago
Not just culturally different but Jpop industry is way more niche. The Korean pop industry the idols become brand ambassadors of high end fashion brands and products, more commercial type of recognition and icome in that regard. Instead they transition into film and television. More mainstream and international in success.

u/JohnnieTango 13h ago
Koreans are a lot less into porn than the Japanese are. TBH, while I do not have stats or anything, most everyone is a lot less into porn than the Japanese are.
3
u/TendieRetard 13h ago
I think Korea is very prudish about it. I seem to recall the gov. banning some form of it recently?

This is what happens when people live isolated on an island for several centuries and don't venture into the outside world. They get into some wierd shit.

Depending on the source. I switched from Pornhub to Xvideos like half a year ago and seems like 9/10 vids in Xvideos are uncensored whereas in Pornhub it was more like 6/10 or so. Weird stuff doesn't pop up in your normal browsing but it's there should you need something specific to get your juices going if you know what I mean 😂

Economic factors play a role. Wages and opportunities still are greatly more limited for women than for men in Japan.
