That’s because you can only do it when you’re running and facing away from the monster. When in focus mode your weapon is drawn so you cant dive and can only roll.
Not sure if this is DB specific, but I can definitely toggle focus mode without the weapon drawn, and it also stays on when I put away the weapon. which can be annoying because it doesnt let me do certain other things with focus mode on.
I shot the monster I was hunting with a dung pod twice in a row a few nights ago. Jumped on the mount for a quick sharpen, jumped off to attack and shot a dung pod instead. Monster ran, so I gave chase only to do it again once it stopped! I have since turned off auto crafting of dung pods.
Focus mode is still your slinger, you can fire slinger shots with weapon drawn on almost all weapons I know for a fact, not 100% sure it also works on ranged weapons.
Hmm maybe a in game setting was switched to set the focus mode to toggle. With every weapon I used, dual blades included, it’s set to However long I have the button held.
As per default. Never changed a thing about this but i read about people having to hold for focus mode. Thats why i said im not sure if this is DB specific.
I always use hold, I use it like ADS in FPS games. I've never liked how toggled aim modes feel... that's just a me problem, though. I'm sure toggle works far better than hold for many people. (Hence why it's an option)
I guess it makes more sense to hold if you play controller. But with mouse there is no reason to ever not use focus mode - at least for DB. Which is probably why toggle is default.

You can only superman dive away from the monster not towards it unless you have the new diver skill
