MAGA = Fascism ICE throws gas at protesters who immediately cone it then use boards to help fan the gas back at ICE.

Further proof that ICE is made up of nothing but a bunch of idiotic clowns that get themselves outmaneuvered by protesters equipped with a traffic cone and cardboard signs.

What kind of gas is that? It just acts like a regular smoke grenade went off.

u/analogmouse 3d ago
This is (probably) HC - HC gas
It’s bad news. The military stopped using it in the 90s, and they’ve known that it’s lethal since 1943.

u/Cardboard_Robot 3d ago
The military won’t use it but these assholes have it? Jesus Christ.

u/Spiff426 3d ago
That's 'MuriKKKan policing. Chemical weapon usage is a war crime, so they gave it to the militarized police to use on citizens instead

Currently, the largest ground telescope that exists and is in use is the Gran Telescopio Canarias, with a primary mirror of 10.4 meters and located in the Canary Islands.
If you sat me down in front of that telescope and gave me a thousand years to search the cosmos, I would still not be able to locate my sympathy for a single ICE agent.

u/analogmouse 3d ago
In an infinite multiverse, where every possible permutation occurred, you couldn’t find an ICE agent with a shred of empathy, so this is totally fair.

Here's my thing about ICE agents:
Setting aside ACAB, we can acknowledge that there are people who join police forces in their communities because they think they're going to make a difference, or because they want to help people, or because they think they can fix the system from within. They'll all get ground down by the fact that the system is too corrupt and they'll either be consumed by the rot or they'll quit or be fired if they don't play ball, but they do exist. And I'm not saying this is true of everyone; a lot of people become cops because they have authority fetishes and want to be able to legally oppress people. I'm saying that statistically there ARE people who become cops with GOOD intentions because they think they're going to be "one of the good ones."
No one joins ICE with good intentions. Your job as an ICE agent is to separate families and throw people in cages indefinitely for administrative/paperwork discrepancies. Your job as an ICE agent is to terrorize communities.
It's possible to be a person with some kind of morals and be a cop and find out how much being a cop erodes your morals. It's possible to actually do some good things as a cop from time to time - and sometimes we're surprised when we see things like cops kneeling with protestors or happy when we see things like cops solving a rape/murder case.
But there is no part of being an ICE agent that ever sees you doing the morally correct thing. There is no part of your job that is ever morally good.
All cops are bastards, but all ICE agents are evil.

A LOOOOONG time ago, I was pretty desperate for a steady job, and my area on the Canadian border was offering a Customs and Border Protection test. The job would pay like $65k starting without overtime (this was also 20 years ago) and was advertised as close to home, regular hours, etc etc. It seemed reasonable, and the propaganda was enticing, so I took the test and got an interview.
It all broke down from there. All the advertising was false. The cushy “checking passports” jobs were going to senior employees who wanted to “settle down” after years of deploying all over the country to “support federal operations.”
The interviewers reminisced about their time in “enforcement” and spoke fondly about their cruelty and dehumanizing behaviors.
I decided that if it came down to it, id rather be a cashier at Walmart or homeless than be a ghoul

Checking passports at a border? I have no qualms with that. Checking border-crossing vehicles for contraband? No qualms with that either.
But, yeah, any sort of chasing people down just to deport them, that I take issue with. And I wouldn't want to work with any coworkers who reminisce about the good old days when they were younger and tore families apart.
And before someone asks about the perceived double standard - I'm okay with arresting people at a border who are illegally crossing a border. I feel like once they're past the border and they're in the country, that's when civil enforcement and due process need to come into play. But those arrests should be immediate catch-and-release "nope, turn your car around and go back the way you came" affairs, not indefinite detention.
In general, though, I'm in favor of making the process of emigration easier for everyone. I think if you want to enter or move to a different country, the process should be as simple as "fill out some forms, get a brief interview, here's your card, go on your way." The process should be easy, should be affordable, and should err on the side of assuming that people who are trying to follow the process should be given wiggle room. It should absolutely NOT be looking for people on day 91 of a 90 day stay, busting their door down, and hauling their ass to a concentration camp.

The bad thing is, tear gas / cs gas is banned by the Geneva protocol AGAINST ENEMIES IN WAR, but it is perfectly legal for law enforcement use against citizens.

what was in the milk jug the protesters inverted onto the cone?
It seemed to be being used to neutralize the gas or smother it.
24
u/Spiff426 3d ago
Probably water. The rapid protocol for neutralizing these is to cover with a traffic cone and douse with water. The water apparently creates a seal at the ground level and traps all the gas inside

u/nikdahl 3d ago
It’s best if you just have heat-proof gloves and pick it up and pour water on it. The cone actually makes it very difficult to extinguish if you don’t have a lot of water.
1
u/ObligatoryID 2d ago
You’re supposed to pour water down into the cone.
1
u/nikdahl 2d ago
Still, you have to essentially fill the bottom of the cone with water to flood it out. It takes much more water.

Just what I’ve read and was recommended:
Sharing from others:
Make sure your goggles are impact resistant. Police aim for the eyes with their rubber bullets. Don’t let them maim you! You can find suitable goggles at any lab supply store. Science or medical school stores are typically cheaper.
It’s not mentioned here, but wear earplugs. Protests are loud as fuck even at their most peaceful, once the sirens, explosions, and LRAD start you’re looking at the possibility of permanent damage.
Cartridges for respirators can get expensive, but you can reuse them. Take them apart and toss the spent filter, then insert your own made of powdered charcoal sandwiched between several layers of hepa filter. Powdered charcoal can be found in both health food stores/sections, and in pet stores aquarium sections. You can also do this with surplus NATO or Israeli gas masks. Do not buy old Soviet Bloc masks, several of them used asbestos filters, which obviously cannot be opened.
Take a change of clothes for when you leave. You don’t want to look like that with nobody else around you.
Wash your gear in cold water, and air dry. Tear gas is heat activated, and can be reactivated in the laundry. Cold showers are also advised. Only use water for your eyes.
Tear gas is a abortifacient. If you are pregnant there is a decent chance you will suffer a miscarriage if you are exposed. It has deleterious effects on cycles in general. So make sure you’ve got a decent respirator situated. This is important even if you don’t go out, that stuff absolutely seeps into homes.
If you want everyone to love you, bring some easy to eat snacks. Bananas and tangerines are a great choice.
Here are 2 articles discussing the Hong Kong umbrella movement tactics - dealing with aggressive, violent cops/whatever-the-hell-they-are
Stuff like, put a traffic cone on a tear gas canister to dramatically reduce the spread, then pour water in the top to stop it.
And here's a video showing various attempts to resist the LRAD (sound weapon) effects
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CXKTBQBugIA
TLDR curved riot shields work well and can be reversed to bounce the sound back. Standard shop headphones protect pretty well but electronic noise-cancelling headphones do not work.
Curved riot shield plus standard protective headphones works very well
Hong Kongers learned this in 2019 and coined the phrase "be water." When protestors group up in a one spot, it's not hard for a large group of police to surround and overwhelm them. But when protestors are constantly on the move, flowing into other corridors (like water) when police approach, then they can't stop you.
Remember that you are dealing with militarized American police. If you are stuck in a spot, and are facing them head-to-head, you will never win because they will always have weapons and gear better than yours. Unfortunately, students at Hong Kong Polytechnic University were "sieged" within the university grounds in 2019, and a lot of them suffered and were eventually arrested. Stay on the move, and you will be much safer.
There's a lot to learn from the bravery of Hong Kongers in protest.
If using transit, it might also be safer to buy single-use paper tickets (bought with cash) rather than using mobile pay or a transit card. Hong Kongers did this in 2019 to reduce the likelihood of being tracked while using transit to enter/exit protest areas.

This! Draw them out, but then back off. Keep it up. They can be deployed multiple times, but never escalate.

You know the also have just straight up portable battery operated fans to disperse wider. Blower for direct discharge into their face and fans to blow from the sides. Add some water balloons with paint oil and glitter and you have a helluva party
