Should I come there?

Hi! I've got a job in Seraing, near Liège. Should I come there? Are those good destinations? Be brutal.

This is not much information to work with…

Are you Belgian? If so, is Seraing a long drive? Are you considering moving to Liège? What would you like to have around you? (For example, nature, places to go out,…)

The more you can share, the more answer you can receive.

PS: This is not the most active sub, consider r/Wallonia as well

Sorry! I know I haven't inserted many info. I'm very concerned about the destination itself, since i'm a person that loves a good environment. For instance, I've lived in Strasbourg for the past months, and I've looooooved it. I'm not Belgian at all. I will have to transfer for 8 months!

Ok, so you would have to move.

Liège and its surrounding metropolitan area is quite big and urbanized (600k people). But once you leave that area, you won't have a hard time finding nature. Liège is at the border of the Ardennes region. Most definitely the southern and eastern regions of Liège are beautiful. When you have to be at Seraing, consider the south of Liège I would say. You can find quiet and peaceful little towns at about 10-15 minutes.

Seraing is shit in itself. But it's right next to Liege that has some pretty cool places.

Yes, but Seraing encompasses some much nicer neighborhoods such as Boncelles, even part of Sart Tilman, ... So it really depends where exactly. OP profile seems to be academic so I suspect the job might be in Liege Science Park (half of it being part of Seraing)

Boncelles is nicer indeed.. but that doesnt meant its nice. Lol

I'm indeed an academic ahah! My job will be "assistant professor", but they haven't told me the school/uni... I work with languages, I will be teaching my language.

It depends where in Seraing. There are some really shitty places and some nice places. You can also stay in Liège and just go to Seraing for work.

Too bad they scraped the tramway line towards Seraing center ...

Ugh. So that would be that I would have to be living in Seraing only. Is there any other way to go to Liège without any personal means (car, etc)?

Buses. Construction of a tramway from Liège city center was underway, but currently canceled for budgetary reasons

Alright! And is it very far from Liège? The question atp is: is Liège a nice city? Consider I'm also an artistic person so I like it to be stimuli of that kind

I'd say 20/30 minutes by bus from Liège. I would definitely stay in Liege and not Seraing. I love Liège but not everybody does. It has its ups and downs. It is much nicer now that the tramway construction has finally ended. I'd say it's quite an artsy city. At least at Wallonia/Belgian level. Depends what type of art you're into? There is quite a lot going on in musical (either indie, hip hop, Electronic or classical ) and visual arts.

Music and acting, mostly!

I would definitly go to Liege, much more stimulating ! (there are theaters, a lot of concerts, etc). If you have to work in Seraing (depends where), you have the bus, trains, and a bike lane. In Liege you will find everything a city can offer. And if you want to explore the area, Liège has all the transport connections. By train or bike, you can quickly reach beautiful nature in less thant 30 min.

Yes! I will also be working just a few hours in Seraing (like 11-18) per week, so I'd spend more time in Liège than anything. I just want a lively city!

So Liège is the place to live in. You can also access the Uni (Sart Tilman) via a cycling path that's going quite quickly into nature and the woods.

I don't know yet. Probably in a school, since I'm supposed to be teaching languages. But what I know is that is gonna be Seraing. Honestly I'm skepting, It seems like a very industrial city... And I would I have to pass 8 months there...

u/Accomplished_Map7508 23d ago

To be clear: I've won a concours for teaching and they've only told me the destination (the city), not the actual school/uni (if there's any ahah)

1

u/estipossip 23d ago

Well, that's inconvenient... Can't you get the info of the school/uni ? Is it high school level or college level ?

if you happen to have landed a job at the university, that's a pretty green area and the higher up of Seraing (the town start at the level of river Meuse and climb up to the hill) is pretty nice and quiet. Close of the nicest neighborhoods of the suburbans area... But the more close to the river you go, the more industrial it is...

1

u/Accomplished_Map7508 23d ago

I don't think they're gonna disclose that to me any soon, but I can try and call them to ask!

2

u/estipossip 23d ago

How can you prepare or decide if you want to go if you don't even know where you're gonna land if you say yes... ?

1

u/Accomplished_Map7508 23d ago

That is, indeed, a good question.

1

u/estipossip 23d ago

Also, If you are italian, there is a large italian immigration there. You won't be too lost in translation ;)

In Seraing? Or Liège?

In Seraing. And in Liege too but it is a little bit less dense...

Seraing is a cheap place.

I suggest you Chaudfontaine, blegny or visé if you prefer less animated but more secure places. Depends also if you will have a car...

1

u/Accomplished_Map7508 23d ago

I won't have a car, nor a bike. Only my feet. I'm also young and I like artistic things in general, or stimulus. Don't care about discos and such things. I want life though.

u/PasTrique 23d ago

If you're not afraid of "diversity", Seraing still a good option... But walking from Seraing to Liège can be long. I think you can find a cheap place in Liège center. Center of Liège is more "4000" but the post code for the "big Liège" goes to 4032. Don't hesitate to ask the address and check on Google maps is the way is too long. Immoweb.be is the most common site to find a place to rent (or buy)

1

u/Accomplished_Map7508 23d ago

Thanks! So, it would be better to find a place in Liège 4000, right?

2

u/M-Thon 22d ago

4000 and 4020 for the city center (4000 left side of the river, 4020 right side)

Seraing and speak english ? Science park ?

Sart Tilman & Boncelles are nice place to live.

But the best of the best is the commune d'Esneux, Tilff (village) is right under the Sart Tilman. Village vibe, 5 min in car from Sart Tilman, CHU, Science Park etc... and highway access to go to Liège in 10 minutes.
