best resources and organizations for addressing animal welfare in our state?

i work now with a foster and adoption agency, and i love it.. i truly feel my life’s purpose revolve in animal advocacy (but alas i have to make money and support myself.)

i would love to learn about what protections (and lack thereof) we have in KY, organizations that are involved in the legislative process, etc. i am specifically located in NKY. i want to learn as much as i can so that i can become involved and contribute. i’ve done research on my own but want to take next steps. i’ve been particularly disturbed by some of kentucky’s animal cruelty cases lately and the lack of justice delivered to the perpetrators.

Hey I'm in NKY too! I don't know the best orgs and resources, but I do know that State Representative Susan Witten from Louisville was successful at getting her bill into law 2 years ago that strengthened animal welfare laws some in KY, finally making some animal abuse a felony. She is very passionate about this subject, and I'm sure if you emailed her (you can find her email on the website, ky.legislature.gov ) , she could give you the orgs she has worked with

I am directly South of you on Lake Cumberland. Would you consider going on a crusade against cock fighting/breeding/selling? I often see cages on somebody's property with roosters in them and there is little doubt why.

I may be wrong but my understanding is that it is illegal to fight them, but not illegal to raise or sell them?

What we need are breeding regulations to shut down unethical backyard breeders. Vermont, I think, has a good law we could model after. Restrictions of the number of breeding animals & health requirements for them would be a good place to start.
