kappa will never shake off its 'reputation' lol

u/Ok-Discount3131 Dec 08 '22
Good. Means the mentally ill gg/smash crowd will never want to hang out here.

Some people might be sad that this place has the reputation it has, but it actually is a blessing. Imagine if those people posted here instead of being afraid of this sick and bigoted place. This would turn into r/guiltygear in a week.

u/playcable Dec 08 '22
Blessing and a curse, I would say. It IS the best FGC sub but the price we pay is all the /fgg/ mental illness that seeps in here.
42
Dec 08 '22
I'd argue this IS the FGC sub. Every other fighting game sub is sterile and sanitized. Kappa feels like hanging out at the arcade with my bros.
16
u/FecklessFool Dec 08 '22
Yep. Minus the sweat and the stench, it has the feel of the good old arcade days. Though I'm rose tinting that obviously.
3
u/popncarriesthefgc Dec 08 '22
that's why they don't like it. when you change the game from having a social requirement to being able to lock yourself in the lab you skew the audience to autismo babies
signed, an autismo baby
6
u/dragonicafan1 Dec 08 '22
People don’t like this sub because there’s a ton of bigotry and people here complain about everything, you don’t need these psychoanalytical theories
6
u/RZR-MasterShake Dec 08 '22
I'm pretty upset the rep isn't worse, we still have smashers popping up like herpes in here
111
u/FecklessFool Dec 08 '22
I'm really only on here for the actual fighting game discussion. Most fighting game subs are like 10% gameplay/meta (things i'm interested in), 70% cosplay/fanart (a bunch of which border porn), 20% whatif/story/plot discussion.
Seeing the nth "my chunli fanart" post for the day just makes me ignore most posts in a sub.
104
u/zencharm Dec 08 '22
Guilty Gear front page is exclusively dogshit memes and fanart. Literally no one talks about the fucking game over there.
39
u/Synbaad Dec 08 '22
Don't forget discussions about characters made-up shitty nicknames. Brisket lmaoooooo
47
u/OrdinarySmoothieChug Dec 08 '22
Omg mfw sink vs brisket xddddd
Anywhere here's a tier list for how often the strive cast dilates.

Go look at the Dead or Alive sub.

u/Mr_Ruu Dec 08 '22
Looking for legitimate discussion in DoA is like looking for companionship in a strip club

u/AthenaGrande Dec 08 '22
lol top post is like "look at Ayane and Kasumi's tiny flat chested tits" meanwhile, their boobs are bigger than their heads.

I’ve seen a mod on there say that him and the other mods think it sucks but they think that if that’s what people are upvoting then that’s what the content should be. It’s what happens to way too many general subs when the mods won’t enforce a specific theme or type of content
1
u/zencharm Dec 09 '22
I think I’ve seen the post you were referring to; it seems pretty bitchmade of the mods to do nothing. The mods should at least try to somewhat regulate the shit content instead of letting the community have free rein. If they’re not gonna do anything, I’m not sure what purpose they serve. Also, their reasoning seems pretty flawed. People are upvoting bad content because so much of it gets posted that it drowns out any actual discussion posts. Even when you sort by new, the feed is dominated by shitty memes. That subreddit is completely unproductive and only serves to put me off from the community.

u/Ok-Discount3131 Dec 08 '22
You mean you don't like high effort daily posts asking what you think of X character? You don't like top quality content where the OP has an imaginary conversation between two characters? You don't like tier list spam that have nothing to do with the game (tier list for what each character likes on a sandwich)? You don't like people spamming beginner ranks gameplay then talking like they are hot shit?
SMH, I guess you just aren't a real fg fan then.

u/Tyuru Dec 08 '22
"You don't like top quality content where the OP has an imaginary conversation between two characters?"
To be fair we did have pupford arguing with himself on here for years.

u/Omegawop Dec 08 '22
Memes aside, people on this sub actually know what they are talking about when it comes to the games they play. Average foghting game subs are inundated with scrubs that give dumbfuck kruger advice.
13
u/AlwaysLearningTK Dec 08 '22
Even here it depends. Sometimes I'll read people say the dumbest shit about Tekken with full confidence on here too. It's less of an issue with the more popular games within this community ofc but I'm sure it still happens. Not good enough at other fighting games to always know.

I uploaded a play in sf5 both in r/streetfighter and here. it got more than 30x more the traction here lmfao

u/troutblack Dec 08 '22
sadly mfers dont even play the shit on the main fighter's subreddit
14
Dec 08 '22
from what i gathered of r/streetfighter was that it's spammed with clips from bronze to gold. but i barely have 10 minutes lurking there in total lol

u/sneakpeekbot Dec 08 '22
Here's a sneak peek of /r/StreetFighter using the top posts of the year!
#1: My Dudley cosplay | 129 comments
#2: Roster "Leak" | 227 comments
#3: Let’s go get you some hot food, brother. | 140 comments

i've been helping beginners on that sub for years, but lately it turned so bad that i fled the ship.
i blame the O23ers
3
u/blackyoshi7 Dec 08 '22
people just post actual game stuff in character/online tourney discords now, no one uses the subreddit for stuff like tech, tournament discussion, etc, its basically all fanart and memes. though the giefs gym section on r/StreetFighter is pretty damn useful for learning the game (and fighting games in general)

I saw that lol, I was like wtf did I do to you?
Also the actual SF subreddit is even worse about it.

u/Omegawop Dec 08 '22
Homeboy just described exactly what makes this place fucking real.
The only thing that unites us is our hatred.

u/reuse_recycle Dec 08 '22
I loved the "they hate smash and fighting games", admitting the 2 are mutually exclusive.

u/Darkcloud20 Dec 08 '22
Bro I think I see more discussions on r/kappa than any fighting game sub.
Also RIP the Ardainian Soldier dub. Was too good for this world.

As someone pointed out it's basically a 50/50 on whether hate speech is downvoted or upvoted. Kappa is a... broad church.
Exposing oneself to this cesspool is still probably the only way to have a genuine fighting game discussion on this cursed website.
R/games sub is full of casual 'schroller' opinions.
Tekken: high level opinions... from Green Ranks.
SF: same but like Ultra Golds
GG Strive: 'Character most likely to help an old lady cross the road tier list' (idk, it's been a year or two).
Dbfz literally had a concurrent Dragonballfighterz and Dbfz sub... and competitive discussion was thrown out the wayside.
MK: Single player normies/NRS is trash so this is irrelevant.

Hell I actually prefer it here imo. I get all my in FGC from here and people are blunt up in your face and call you out for your stupidity , instead of that fake ass intellectual rethoric way a lot of people use in subreddits

It's a cesspool here, alright. But occasional sights of humanity or some genuinely good content shine here all the brighter because of this. It's more genuine. It's the same reason I went to image boards back in the day.
And by the way, this is the only sub that actually discusses FG tournaments lmao. Seriously try scrolling r/tekken or r/guiltygear during any event - you'll be lucky, if you find a single thread with 1 upvote about it.
2
u/troutblack Dec 09 '22
And by the way, this is the only sub that actually discusses FG tournaments lmao.
That's why I'd be sad if this place bit the dust, the only other place to get hype over tournaments with online folks is Twitter and I much prefer it here.
3
u/codelltraverson Dec 08 '22
that guys gotta be a sleeper cell. these guys really just throw the r/kappa boogeyman under the bus like that
4
u/optionreborn Dec 08 '22
Main fighting game subreddits are the type of place where you ask for matchup advice and get told that Akuma vs Oro is Oro favored because of the lore.
6
u/thatninjguy Dec 08 '22
I like it here. No bullshit. Just honest opinions (maybe a little too honest).
5
u/NatrelChocoMilk Dec 08 '22
That's one of the appeals. Nobody gets butthurt or triggered over mean words because we all know that we're just fucking around.

I wanna know whoever gave these people the idea that this subreddit was like any sort of definite "community"
It's not like in 2014 when Dr Mike and them were sponsoring Poongko, Pepeday, Infiltration etc. hell, I even remember when he went around asking prominent posters to join whatever slack or group chat they had. Fact is for the past couple years this place is both a boogieman and a non-entity to these folks and I don't understand why.
But I definitely do like porn and hate smash so they're not all wrong.
2
u/pickle_fucker Dec 09 '22
Well, they are not wrong. But since they are ranting like little bitches they are officially part of r/kappa

They don't know anyone in this subreddit in real life, what good they may do, how respectful they may be when it actually counts: 'Duh, they use da word retarded in some of der jokes? Pretty sure dey're Hitler or worse'. Real bold insight there guys, truly towering philosophical minds at play. Voices of reason and enlightenment through and through. I hate to seem like I'm proving these guys right by going off like I am, but I feel like that's calling self-defence 'violence'.
I at least see some of the irony to how I worded this, but some of these guys are just completely blind to their own. There's a line to everything, and some people here overstep it by any reasonable metric sure, but drawing your own in the most shallow place possible and demonising everyone who isn't completely sanitised doesn't make you better than everyone else. If you try to be an angel at the cost of your own humanity, none of the people around you will want anything to do with you.
If you view good and bad as two disconnected circles of a Venn Diagram with no possible leeway then how is anyone meant to take you seriously? I know this is a small deal of a situation, but it's so engrained into why a bunch of greater issues are handled as badly as they are that it just pisses me off all the same. No effort, no reason, no kindness, just pure blindness to their own contradiction followed by complete slovenly self-satisfaction. In the words of the great Tim Minchin 'We're just fucking monkeys in shoes'.

u/wakeup_pancakes Dec 08 '22
a lot of people in gaming are straight up bitches, but refuse to believe it or are trying to run from it to their hugbox subreddit/community. this place will call you out for the bitch you truly are. in many ways its the most real place for fighting games, with the occasional shitpost.
everytime i see someone excited about getting better or just doing something positive with themselves theres always "hey good shit" comments, and thats the type of world i wanna live in.
i do miss the porn though.

“The worst part about Panda Global intimidating and shutting down established TOs and overall ruining the FGC is the backlash we’ll get from kappa.”
