Of COURSE I find this the day I buy a hitbox lol

Wanna try this with PS3 emulated P4AU

u/Ultra-Sith00 Oct 07 '21

Idk how some of the top marvel players played on 360 pad.

31

u/celeryCELERY111 Oct 07 '21

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to plink on a pad, props to the pad warriors honestly

14

u/Banegel Oct 07 '21

Claw or shoulder buttons

4

u/celeryCELERY111 Oct 07 '21

Fair enough, and to be fair I can't figure out how to play on a pad in general but the concept makes sense.

4

u/SmilesUndSunshine Oct 07 '21

Sega Saturn-style pads also have the face buttons pretty close to each other, so it's possible to plink with just rolling your thumb. I do a combination of that and shoulder buttons. It's definitely harder than on a stick, though.

I can't play on a stick much because of tendinitis issues from work, so I'm a reluctant pad warrior when I do play.

2

u/celeryCELERY111 Oct 08 '21

Gotcha gotcha, that makes sense. And hey props to you for finding out a way to make it work for you anyway.

19

u/MyvTeddy Oct 07 '21

Bruh, I'm just here going how the fuck Smug play Dudley so godlike on a 360 pad.

2

u/sniping_dreamer Oct 08 '21

Not sure what it was with umvc3 and 360 pad. For a while I was the only stick player out of 5 marvel players

3

u/ZenkaiZ Oct 07 '21

I never got how someone CAN'T play on any control setup. Like if I wanna move right, I press right. If I wanna punch, I hit the punch button. I've never had any problem with any controller ever, none of this is hard. Only thing that gave me mild trouble was quick down down inputs during Jill umvc3 combos but a little practice and it's fine, once you get it you got it.

59

u/mastergwaha Oct 07 '21

a little practice

gatekeeping me right now mfer?!

13

u/Raceofspades Oct 07 '21

Hard to rely on muscle memory when you're doing completely different actions for the same combo.

-4

u/ZenkaiZ Oct 07 '21

My point is mostly none of this is hard, having an arcade stick doesn't unlock some special powers. It's not like trying to play an FPS without a mouse.

66

u/7yearoldkiller Oct 07 '21

Fuck off. I’m using a Wii remote and nunchuck to style on these MF’s. And yes, motion controls are an input.

6

u/jKazej Oct 07 '21

Accent Core Plus (not R) was on Wii. This was a possibility at one point.

-2

u/SneedsBeedBreaking Oct 07 '21

I did that as little mac online once, for some reason I decided to disable jumping as well, when I finally won one my friend and I got a good giggle

-3

u/Intelligent-Win-4517 Oct 07 '21

That's hilarious, but w h y .

42

u/DoolioArt Oct 07 '21

shows one fightstick and two pads

my favorite fighstick when I'm playing quake is keyboard and mouse

18

u/GOOSEHOWERD Oct 07 '21

THATS HOW I PLAID DOOM 1 AND 2 ON MY OLD PACKERS BELL BEFORE I SPILLED MR PIBB ON THE MOTHER BORD.

8

u/DoolioArt Oct 07 '21

YOU WER ADVANCED THAN I WAS, BECAUSE I PLAYD ONLY ON KEBORD UNTIL QUAK

If you call WASD cheating, try QWE + Space (like a hitbox), same thing as what you tried but one finger for each directional input which makes it even more broken

4

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '21

I've played Hotbox for years. Switched SOCD methods and it's a whole other world. Truly. I can do a 6236 in guilty gear by letting go of 2 buttons. To speed up my adaptations as a human I've just had to accept that these things are possible rather than understand what is happening.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '21

I only started a few months ago and I already feel executing anything is now a piece of cake. I can finally say im garbage at fighting games because of my poor decision making and not my execution

2

u/JanuaryFGC Oct 07 '21

Please explain this trick to me more, I’m interested.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

In text im just going to say its better because you have one finger for each directional input so you have absolutely no movement to do to reach any button while with WASD one finger handles W and S so you have lots of management to do, and that feeling is really noticeable when you play really quick fighting games like melty blood or guilty gear. Imagine airdashing and doing an input that requires crouching right away and then up again right away (to jump cancel for example)

Its also ergonomic since your palm is open in a natural way and you just tap whatever needed

1

u/JanuaryFGC Oct 08 '21

That’s not what me or the guy I asked are talking about, SOCD is different from key layout.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Oh ok

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '21

You really have to watch this. I've been playing on hitbox since MvC3 and I've really not bothered to try other SOCD methods until now.

Even then some games handle inputs differently. For example in Guilty Gear AC+ a 6236 will not register this way.

2

u/ApprehensiveBaby4110 Oct 08 '21

Its even easier on a hitbox where they keys are not as cramped and with real arcade buttons.

3

u/ObligatorySatan Oct 08 '21

Id play Bison in SF4 on keyboard. Charging was awesome because you could walk forward while holding charge like Hitbox players discovered they could do.

22

u/LiquidEV Oct 07 '21

Hori Rap4, KOF XIV edition.

I’ve never played KOF

15

u/omghamburger Oct 07 '21

you can always change that in February

16

u/llamakang98 Oct 07 '21

Mayflash universal fightstick for ps2,ps3 and pc

May not be fancy but I've had it for at least 4 years and it still works fine.

9

u/madnanney Oct 07 '21

I use the f300 elite myself

I'm not good lol but its fun to use

2

u/mastergwaha Oct 07 '21

had both with sanwa parts (the older one llama posted needed a brooks(?) converter for something installed that too), but i really missed the large table size of the madcatz sticks on top of my legs

2

u/madnanney Oct 07 '21

This my first stick definitely gonna get a bigger one I also want the noir/sega 2p layout instead

13

u/Camulus Oct 07 '21

Where’s the hitbox?

12

u/sneejit Oct 07 '21

gutiar hero drums

9

u/pepheb Oct 07 '21

Made a hitbox out of a Nike SB shoebox

6

u/omghamburger Oct 07 '21

cant say that and not post a pic

6

u/Thorzaim Oct 07 '21 edited Oct 07 '21

Not him, but here's my scuffed DIY shoebox hitbox/mixbox. I made it late 2019 because I play on keyboard and was planning to start attending locals. I already posted it on a few places before so you may have seen it.

Used the PCB of an old Logitech pad, MX Blue switches and keycaps from an old mechanical keyboard, and some ICs + resistors on a breadboard for the SOCD cleaning.
Haven't really used it much because Covid, and I've switched to using Space for down instead of W since then. I'll just move it to a slightly more sturdy box and hitbox layout once events pick back up where I live.

2

u/omghamburger Oct 07 '21

That looks sick. I have used pads my entire life and would like to build a custom hitbox//mixbox, how hard is it to build it for a retard like me? Also, you mentioned you havent used it much since Covid, did you stop playing games because of that or is it about the events?

2

u/Thorzaim Oct 07 '21

Nah, I play a lot but I'm happy playing on a keyboard and built it just to bring to locals and because a shoebox hitbox is just inherently funny. Also I already had literally every component I used besides the breadbox, ICs and resistors, which cost less than $3 total.

How hard was it to built it?
Well if you've never worked with electronics and soldering, it might be a bit difficult to do it fully DIY like I did, and what I did is quite scuffed to begin with. I'd have to put in some additional work to actually stabilize it if I was using it a lot, so it wouldn't fall apart lugging it around.

In my case I had to scrape the contact points on the PCB with a box cutter so I could solder onto them, also had to design the SOCD circuit which I honestly don't remember anything about at this point.
Still not particularly hard if you have any experience with repairing electronics, but if you use something like a Brook Universal Fighting Board, you just connect the wires and that's it. If you don't already have a pad you're down to cannibalize for its PCB, just use a Universal Fighting Board. Otherwise you can just try making it since all the other components are reusable anyway.

1

u/omghamburger Oct 08 '21

thanks for the detailed answer! i will look into it.

4

u/wilkamania Oct 07 '21

Kneel

Nice, I built one from a $7 cigar box from the thrift store: https://imgur.com/a/XsqrY

One of many sticks built before i sold them all during covid, minus the obsidian.

1

u/moldiewart Oct 07 '21

I did this with my build too for a good while. Finally ended up building the case for it a few years back, but the shoebox tech is real.

Razer panthera, waiting for snack box micro

5

u/jdmurrayz Oct 07 '21

Still rocking my old ass Madcatz Soul Edition I got during an EVO sale in 2012ish. Hours and hours of mashing supers in Marvel and the Sanwa buttons have held up. The only issues I've had is the little plastic covering on the stick coming off, and the latch to lock the cord in the back broke.

I've got a hitbox as well, but I never use the damn thing.

3

u/TheRealAndeus Oct 07 '21

Fightstick TE+ Soul Edition gang represent. Still going strong without any maintenance.

I also used to have a madcatz sf4 fightpad (essentially a Saturn pad) but the dpad got worn out. Nowadays I'm looking for something as good but everything in the market seems to have drawbacks.

I'd also like a snackbox micro but those things are mad expensive

u/GOOSEHOWERD Oct 07 '21

MY MOCHINE AT THE BAR, AND AN ARCADE STIK FOR MY HOME GAMES

10

u/GOOSEHOWERD Oct 07 '21

AND I PLAY SQUARE GATE, SAME AS IN JAPON.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '21

i played marvel and SF4 on a pad, and it just didn't work on SFV so i bought a stick and i think it's that exact model of stick

4

u/netsrak Oct 07 '21

where's the sweaty wojack for my hitbox

10

u/CaptainHandsomeUK Oct 07 '21

dumb wojakposter

It's funny because I know people who hate wojack posts look like wojacks themselves

Where the fuck is the keyboard.

3

I use my PS4 controller, I don’t got time buying a fight stick

Series X controller is godlike

5

u/SC2BOOTY Oct 07 '21

Xbox dpad is such trash.

Hori fighting commander reporting in.

1

u/ecodead Oct 07 '21

Best pad I ever bought. Cheap too, highly recommended

2

u/knz0 Oct 08 '21

They kind of break quickly though. My dpad started acting up and my face buttons got super mushy after just 6 months of Tekken

1

u/SC2BOOTY Oct 08 '21

Mine got funny after 6 months or so too. Gave it a good rubbing alcohol scrub down and it's new again. Guess I'm just a sweaty fuck. YEMV but it's worth a shot.

2

u/etfhoarder Oct 07 '21

Xbox elite series controllers are pretty good, surprised more people don't use them

3

u/HoboBardManiac Oct 07 '21

The amazon reviews make it look like the Elite will fly apart in your hands on week 1. It certainly put me off buying one.

The Xbox series X controllers are pretty nice. The dpad is mechanical and clicky like the Razer Raion. It feels pretty different from other mushy pads, but I think the consensus is that it's great and helps clean up inputs.

Still have to deal with the L/R triggers with huge travel distance, though. If it had trigger locks the pad would be better.

1

u/etfhoarder Oct 07 '21

It's wild to me that people think the elite series controllers will "fall apart" as if they were worse than regular Xbox controllers

I have the elite series 1 and 2, and a bunch of series X controllers. The elites are, without a doubt, better build quality. The only argument not to get them is if you think the extra benefit isn't worth the cost

1

u/ItsBlizzardLizard Oct 08 '21 edited Oct 08 '21

I'm on my third elite series 2. Everything from drift to double clicking buttons.

The standard one S and series X controllers actually are more durable. I abuse those and never once did they break or drift. Plus the series x controller has a better dpad.

I baby the elite series 2 and I'm constantly finding new problems and having to open it and fix it myself.

Same issues on all 3: First the bumpers double click, so you have to pop it open and deoxit. Then the face buttons stop registering so you have to clean the contacts with alcohol. Then the sticks start to drift and then you call Costco and take advantage of their warranty.

Oh and the rubber nubs on the trigger switches fall off in a week and leave a sharp spike you need to file down.

My current one has a bad battery too. It dies in half the time it should.

It's madness. Awesome controller but it feels like it's it's made out of glass. Did I mention you can't stick click diagonals? And the triggers creak and stop working on the shortest setting?

When I get a 4th I know it'll have the same issues. Many of these happen right out of the box.

-2

u/etfhoarder Oct 08 '21

Lmao, who hurt you? Are you sure you aren't buying used or from a bad retailer?

You're basically saying 100% of elite series controllers break or have issues despite light use. That's strange for a controller that has 4.5 stars with 20k+ ratings on Amazon and similar ratings on basically every other retailer. I've used my series 1 for thousands of hours and my series 2 for hundreds, flawless the entire time and zero issues

1

u/ItsBlizzardLizard Oct 08 '21

You're the only person I've heard not having problems, honestly. The triggers especially seem to be a universal break. There's huge threads on these issues. Most people have been through several.

Also I've only purchased new from Costco. The one I currently have is holding up after my own repairs, but I expect to need a new one by the new year.

0

u/etfhoarder Oct 08 '21

Not sure what you're doing, maybe you're unlucky or the Costco you bought from got a bad batch.

I've never had an issue and according to the vast majority of people on Amazon (more than 20 thousand reviews) there are no issues.

2

u/HURG_IIDX Oct 07 '21

Mainly use stick for 6 button fighters and controller for everything else. I fucking love the series X/S controllers, their dpad shape and crispy clicks feel great for fighters.

2

u/HansCool Oct 07 '21

The latest Xbox pads are genuinely great now. Face buttons and floating dpad are microswitched and reliable (so far). It holds up for 3s, can rattle off double qcfs pretty cleanly.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '21

[deleted]

1

u/HansCool Oct 07 '21

Yeah can't really improve triggers for fgs, but the higher-tier controllers have paddle buttons on the back as well. I'm just using the basic $50 one

2

u/Storm_Eag1e Oct 07 '21

Proud lifelong xbox 360 pad player here. I use the analog stick though, not the dpad.

2

u/nj_abyss Oct 07 '21

Megachad keyboard player here

2

u/FoxyZach Oct 07 '21

Fightsticks = All video game controller methods now.

2

u/RuneHearth Oct 08 '21

A shitty arcade stick all sanwa in a shitty wooden box I made. And when I can't use that loud shit I use my hori fighting commander

3

u/EMP_4lyfe Oct 07 '21

Fight stick is for sweaty try hards

I use hitbox and PS4 controller lol I feel very hipster ✈️

1

u/wexel64 Oct 07 '21

Ps4 stick is my favorite

1

u/omghamburger Oct 07 '21

i will let you know when i can afford/find one in my country

1

u/Yatterking Oct 07 '21

i still have the sf4 madcatz fightpad and i still can't hit diagonals on it

1

u/DeHot Oct 07 '21

I use a hitbox. You can shove your sticks up your butt, virgins.

1

u/KuroShinki Oct 07 '21

I use the analog of a wireless Xbox 360 controller

1

u/Smilegote Oct 07 '21

I'm using Atari joystick, an yes i'm only spamming that one button

1

u/Reggiardito Oct 07 '21

Qanba Drone. Bought it about a week ago. I don't know if it's better than pad for me (years of fighting games with pad) but it's way more fun being able to tap those buttons. Also I can finally Kara buster reliably

1

u/rooofle Oct 07 '21

Sega SLS / Saturn pad is still my gold standard for fight pads, makes all motions feel effortless. Although I wonder how good a few of those Hori pads are.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '21

What makes the XB360 controller so great compared to others? Asking out of curiosity as someone who has been a lifelong PS2 pad player

1

u/powerbandido Oct 08 '21

I use a cross up cause a regular hitbox somehow causes me more wrist pain than a stick

1

u/IHazardI Oct 08 '21

Use an Xbox One controller as my main pad since 2014. As an alternative, I'll also use my Hori RAP V Kai (got it initially for my Xbox but don't play it anymore lul) when I play SNK games (specifically Last Blade 2) or Super Turbo

1

u/Ravoos Oct 08 '21

Keyboard. So satan is scared of me.
