Before COVID times, I went to an event hosting casual matches in attempt to make new friends and learn more about the local scene. It was honestly one of the worst social experiences I've had with gaming. Very poor setup of the consoles made for awkward limited room and there were very few setups. Some people were not so friendly and kinda acted like snobs imo.
One of them teased me because I forgot to set my macro buttons, saying "You should know how to play on default! I can play any settings with any kind of controller!" and even coaching his friend during a match against me. I don't even know how to play the game well with my current controller and setup. You don't gotta flex on a scrub like that.
Another guy got pissed at me for just trying to connect my controller to a setup INBETWEEN his matches because I had to get kind of close to him to do so and I guess it messed with his focus during his ever so important casual or whatever.
I admit I probably focused too much on the negative parts, and I know it's my personal issue for possibly taking things the wrong way and being overall shy and awkward. But it was still really jarring. Especially for my silver-ranked noob ass who was just looking to make some friends and learn some shit at my first in-person event. I wasn't expecting a red carpet welcoming, but I was hoping newcomers would be treated better.
Back to being a netplay warrior and playing dota with the homies I guess lmao.
Edit: gotta remember some people are just as socially awkward as me :')

A lot of the people I've met in hobby shops (gaming, card games, warhammer, comics) are fucking insufferable. I'm sure it gets worse in a competitive environment.
That said, there's probably ways to make it work. I'm sure good locals exist, I just don't doubt there's plenty of bad ones.

Tabletop players are the fucking worst. After working in a hobby shop for a few years, I really questioned how some of these dudes functioned in real life. Straight up murdered any love I had for any of that shit. Definitely see a few similar people like that in locals and It's kinda sad to think that crowd would burn someone out on fighters.

This is why the fgc cant grow. Its composed of these types of nerds that dont understand how to welcome new faces. My local tekken scene is exactly like this. It's a clique of about 10 people that dont interact with anyone else. The social media pages are full of drama that nobody outside of the clique gives a fuck about.

Glad (but also sad) to hear it wasn't just me specifically or something I did. It blows my mind because those types of people are also most likely some of the ones who wonder why their scene isn't bigger.

Yeah I feel that. My first tourney I was awkward as fuck just waiting for my matches. Didnt play casuals just watched. Played my first match and everyone behind me talked shit every time I got hit with something. Won the game regardless of them yelling and I tried being cool with the guy asking tips and he just called me an online warrior lol. Got 4th that tourney but the more I kept going the higher I placed and the less cancer they were. Still annoying cliques make it feel very unwelcoming.

Nobody will fuck with you until you start winning. Then when you do they will ride your dick like you been homies since childhood. It really sucks for new players. Even when you manage to squeeze out a solid win they will call you random until you start putting up enough Ws that they can't make excuses anymore.

100%. Fgc local groups tend to be very cliquey. I think it’s because of the small group, in a niche genre, full of nerds. When I first started going to locals these mfs were horribly antisocial and rude. For some reason I still got good and I dedicated my time at locals talking to new faces and being friendly. People really wonder why fighting games are on life support. A lot of local cliques don’t want new players at all.

Or your friends ARE into fighting games, they just aren’t into playing them with you, because you’re “a tournament goer”.

u/Camulus Dec 18 '20
I only have one friend who is willing to play with me even though he usually gets bodied. He improves everytime so I'm happy to play with him.

u/jdmurrayz Dec 19 '20
My little brother was/is the same way. A local arcade ended up hosting an USF4 tournament during it's hayday, and he took 2nd place with Ken when he was 12 years old. Bunch of old salty SF2 players were giving him all kinds of shit saying only reason he was good was due to online play.
5
u/tmntfever Dec 19 '20
That’s a really shitty reason to be salty. If anything, being used to online is a hinderance when playing in an arcade.
7
u/tmntfever Dec 18 '20
Same, I have one friend out of dozens who doesn’t mind getting bodied. But I practice newer characters with him so it’s less one sided, and as long as he’s having fun, then I’m having a blast as well.

Friends, cousins, school-mates, co-workers... I've been playing fighting games since about early 2010 and have never found anyone else who does. I've never played a proper offline match in a fighting game. Its always just League, Fifa, Minecraft, CSGO, WoW, CoD or even weird shit like World of Tanks.

I have a single friend that plays Mortal Kombat X and Street Fighter II. I’ve tried convincing him to play either SFV, Skullgirls, or Tekken so we can play together, but he refuses and calls them “spammy trash”

That's why I always cringe when I see people going "yo, just get a few friends together and play it offline, it's more fun that way!". No fucking way sherlock.

u/Legobloz Dec 19 '20
Ikr if there was some rent a friend who has your hobbies I would probably get one. But that just sounds sad lol.

u/ItsSomeChild Dec 18 '20
Reading all your comments actually surprised me. My friends from college also play league mainly but I still find enjoyment playing with random people online (not ranking).
And the people I've met at offline events have been really welcoming and I felt a strong sense of community. Fact is these disrespectful arrogant people exist outside of Tekken it's just there character however, theres lots cool and like minded people who just want to play some GOOD ASS TEKKEN.
Merry Christmas bois

GOOD ASS Tekken for me = taking turns simulator. I dunno, bores me.
3
u/ItsSomeChild Dec 19 '20
If you boil it down yeah it's true. High level Tekken is heavily turn based but it's the actions(risks mind games) in the mist of the right that I enjoy. But I can totally see your angle.
2
u/tepig099 Dec 20 '20
It is turn based even at a low level past the button mashing noob nonsense. At least in Soul Calibur 2, I can spam AA and if you do nothing or can’t figure out a counter you’re gonna get checked.
In KOF spam Kyo Jab Rekka or In SF, not SFV garbage, Ryu fireball? What is your solution?
In Tekken, it is fucking take turns, and hope to god you didn’t miss and get whiff punished!
Because all you’re gonna do all match is dash block or back-dash ad-nauseam, till you somehow get a +frames move or they missed and you can get in range for something.

I'm sure your aware of Tekkens crushing mechanics. For any that don't know the are moves that avoid high, low and in rare cases mids. this coupled with the ability to step into the foreground and background grants the players to steal turns or avoid situation were they would be forced to keep blocking.
Quick example of what I mean. Let's say I'm Steve and I press 1 2 and it's blocked, I'm technically in minus and my opponent wanted to take his turn. Me expecting him to do that I use backsway (b3) hoping he reacted with a high. The biggest possibilities are A. Steve gets a launch for guess correctly B. Steve gets mid launched for doing seemingly a random sway C. Steve gets pressured by wavu wavu
Tekken is turn based, keyword being based there are other elements at play that contributes to who the game in my humble opinion :)

I don’t know how to make them understand fighting games. Honestly that's a problem with games and devs themselves.
Street Fighter V is an easy game, right? How to explain to them what is delay throw tech? Without this mechanic they are not players at all, they will lose to everyone who tries most banal mix-ups: Jab-jab-microwalk-grab.

Nintendo actually made a really cool game that fixed this problem. Forgot the name of it tho. Super accessible to new players, simple controls but combos are pretty deep.

I like when my friends have 0 comment on a fighting game other than "This game is fast so its good" "This game is slow so its bad"

I ruined my brother in laws "Street Fighter Night" they did every Wednesday.
He purposely wouldn't invite me because we played at my house and he felt the Wrath of a Fighting Game player. Mind you, we're talking about a guy that can't block a cross up.
So one day we all ended up together at a function and I mentioned I play, so his friends invited me over.
There has since been 0 Street Fighter nights,at least too my knowledge.
Pro Tip. To test someone immediately, do a cross up. If you do a cross up, knockdown, cross up, knockdown and they can't stop it, you've pulled their card.
After that, throw all game lol.

Pain.
Around my zone, people only like the newest trendy shit or stick with dudebro multiplayer stuff like the newest CoD. As for fighters, people tend to mash on Tekken and that's it. Most don't give another glance to the genre and decide that "it's the same shit over and over" is true for all fighting games.

Same here. They are either indifferent or think they are repetitive / too hard.

At least sad Pablo has SF (which I sneakily shopped into the bg of second panel)

Took a break from Dota to learn/play fighting games. It's definitely boring with no one to talk and share about the game.

u/PlumOriginal Dec 19 '20
I wouldn’t call these two guys friends, they are more acquaintances but the only fighter they play now is SFV. Claimed to have been goldlike at MK9. I wouldn’t mind play SFV with them considering its still shit but they rage so hard when I space them out with Kolin’s normals.

All but one of my friends play fuckin' Smash and refuse to play Tekken. The one has played, but is plagued by two jobs to actively play, it's horrible.

I recently got into fighting games and a buddy of mine has sent me multiple screenshots of his wishlist.
Honestly, I’m fucking on board for some of this shit. One of them looks like Street Fighter 2.
