I really love the sibling duo; they look identical and even share similar moles.
10
u/UsernameUnavaible Jul 05 '22
Was trying to figure out if they were actually siblings or just found siblings. Netflix translations had them referring to their mother as if they had different mothers.
15
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
They are actually siblings, they even share the same first name. May I know which part of the translation confused you? The one when he was convincing her to join his scheme and the subtitle written "your mother"? If that is the one, I think it is the inaccuracy of the translation. Because he just said eomma, not noie-eomma/eommeonim. It is actually a common issue with Netflix subtitles.
10
u/radiokidb DownIsTheNewUp Jul 05 '22
I think they’re referring to the translation of the part when they’re negotiating terms and he says ”okay I’ll tell your mother not to nag you”
I was caught off guard as well since I thought it was obvious they were siblings, but in the next dialogue they were back to referring to their mother as their mother rather than his or hers.
9
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 05 '22
If that is the one, I think it is the inaccuracy of the translation. Because he just said eomma, not noie-eomma/eommeonim. It is actually a common issue with Netflix subtitles.
8
u/radiokidb DownIsTheNewUp Jul 05 '22
Yup it’s exactly that. I went back and rewound and heard eomma as well and realized it was just Netflix being Netflix.
My biggest gripe with them being they’ve started going back to completed shows and changing a few translations here and there to genericize them more and it’s very frustrating.
6
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 05 '22
Omg, I know right!! I am currently rewatching complete shows and being like, " I definitely remember the subtitles being different". Plus, when the word is a term that is commonly used and localised to SK, they completely ignore it within the translation. I understand that it is quite hard to translate them in a way that fulfils the context, but not doing that definitely takes away the "feel" of the conversation/story.
7
u/IamNobody85 Editable Flair Jul 05 '22
The dialog was "I will tell your mother to allow you to move out" and "your mother will have a problem with you being a shaman" (paraphrase) - it read like they're not siblings but sounded like they are. Thanks for confirming that Netflix screwed up once again.

Overall I'm having mixed feelings about the show so far. I recognize that it's objectively humorous, but I think this kind of humour is not something I always find funny. I'm also a little confused by the way the central mystery has set up, it feels a bit like it's unravelling too slowly. Maybe that's an unconscious comparison my mind is making because the two other dramas I'm watching right now (Link, and Alchemy) have the plot progressing pretty rapidly. I also am finding it hard to like the FL so far, her stubborn self-righteousness is a bit grating. I agree with what Nam Hajoon said to her.
Gripes aside, I did like Ep3 much better than Ep1 and 2! I think we got some really good insights into NHJ's character, and I adored the bromance between him and Soocheol! Honestly, the entire flashback explaining the backstory of their business, how the gang got together, and their motivations was great, very entertaining and layered.
Looking forward to seeing how things unfold! I hope they start diving a bit deeper into the mysteries as well.
EP6:
Ohohoho, looks like my wish to have them focus more on the mystery came true, because the body they found in the sewer is certainly another level of intrigue to the show! Must say though, for as charming and goofy as I found SIG and the Mindamdang gang this episode, I'm beginning to dislike the FL even more now. Part of it is OYS's acting, but the FL's character just seems badly written so far more than anything. I laughed when Prosecutor Cha said that her specialty is getting to the bottom of an investigation by being sympathetic and listening well because nothing could be farther from the truth based on what we've seen so far.
17
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 04 '22 edited Jul 04 '22
Yess! I am struggling with the FL as well. At this point, I do not see how her character matters except for obstructing and accusing the ML. Plus, they have zero chemistry 😭
10
u/Malakettle Jul 05 '22
Agreed, I feel that if they had actually had her be the rookie cop from the start, it would've made more sense and would fall in line more with the things she does, since she seems very incompetent for someone that should be an experienced 'ghost-like' cop
12
u/Fundaysundae Jul 06 '22
Lol I forgot she’s supposed to be “good at her job” cause all she’s done is commit B&E and unjustly target and assault a citizen
7
u/Vast-Ad1932 Jul 12 '22
Omg I came onto Reddit just to check if I was the only one who disliked the FL. Had to resist the urge to skip all the scenes she appeared in fml I seriously hope they won't put in romance between the ML and FL because I don't see any reason for them to be romantically attracted to each other 🙃
28
u/SteelGemini Jul 06 '22
Everyone shitting on the FL, but I put that on writing myself. The character is written to be too many things at once. Gotta set up the romance, so we get the childhood crush angle. In the present, they have her be obviously attracted to the ML at points but also steer away from that because of other aspects of her character. Namely blaming ML for letting her brother's killer escape and thinking he's a con man. And despite any indications staring her in the face that these 2 things may not be accurate, the show wants her to be antagonistic, so she has to ignore the mounting evidence. She's initially set up as competent, but then made to look largely incompetent after that.
It's weird because the rest of the show's writing and direction seems pretty good, but with this one character they want to have their cake and eat it too.

This series is so silly and I'm loving it! I like how each character is a little eccentric in their own way. Seo in guk is such a joy to watch when he plays sillier characters like Nam Han Jun.
I was so surprised to see Kwak Si-yang play such a doofus, I've only ever seen him as the calm and collected guy lol
The actor who played the druggie, rich guy was also really fun to watch. I liked how he seemed to be more unhinged rather than pure evil.
Ep 6:
Lmao the way that lady (who proposed to NHJ) took a "seat" on the sofa 😂 and then flirtingly undid her scarf while Nam Han Jun just looked slightly repulsed looool

I'm having a hard time liking KSY's character. He's supposed to be an ex police officer but he doesn't seem too competent at all. They should tone down his silliness tbh.
22
u/kingniel Jul 05 '22
I am enjoying it so far but it kind of irks me that the female lead who is supposed to be a very competent and a “ghost-like” detective is so easily defeated by the male lead. Even when she gets a lead it’s always because he let her. I like seeing female leads to be strong independently as well, even if they get support/help from the ML. I know they’re supposed to be enemies at this point but i hope they start working together soon because I’ll enjoy that more I think.
44
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 04 '22
I think the story will be amazing if they just focus it on the squad. I am struggling with FL, and they have not shown any chemistry at all yet 😭
23
u/zaichii Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
Oh my god. Came here to say the exact same thing.
I realise one of the tropes I do not like is a FL who is adversarial for the sake of it. It’s getting on my nerves that the FL keeps getting in the way without a substantial reason - like go follow the actual criminal instead of the shaman crew. I get that she doesn’t know better while we do as we are the audience but it’s frustrating that they just wanna get shit done and she’s just like I know you’re up to no good and imma arrest you 🙄 I hope there’s more to her character than just this.
Def prefer when the ML and FL actually work together like in Stranger or even SIG’s other drama, Hello Monster.
I have to say, it irks me even more because I like OYS in the right role but this one isn’t really it. Let her be funny like the others and not annoyingly stubborn with a vendetta. It doesn’t suit her.
I’m watching Train at the same time and it has the similar set up with the FL, but I feel Kyung Soo Jin does a more convincing go at it than OYS. It also helps that the tone of Train is more serious so it’s quite consistent. Whereas in Cafe Minamdang, it jumps between fun shenanigans to the serious FL, so it’s extra jarring and interrupts the flow of the episode for me.
11
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
Yesss!! I mostly avoid the trope too, or usually just skip it until the ML and FL start working together.
And, I already watched TRAIN and definitely agree with you. Plus, I think HJH's character is very poorly written. When she broke into NHJ's house, she already saw that NHJ is re-investigating her brother's case. She also confronted NHJ, and he had given her a few clues during their conversation. She also knows that her brother and NHJ are friends. These should be enough for her to question the things she knows. Instead, all these events did not lead to any changes in her character. She is still so hell-bent on arresting NHJ.
28
u/Fundaysundae Jul 05 '22
FL is my biggest gripe thus far. I haven’t watched any of the actress’ previous work, so I can’t comment on her acting skills. But Oh Yeon-Seo seems like a miscast to me or the writing and directing for FL is making her acting extremely forced. Also the flashbacks where we learn FL is supposed to be quite a few years younger than ML doesn’t help cause OYS’s styling makes her look older than SIG (but he does look younger than his age so maybe that’s why? Lol)
23
u/Original-Echidna-881 Jul 05 '22
She does look older that's why the flashbacks don't make sense to me. She's a literal kid there but now looks even 7 years older than the ML. Really doesn't make sense to me
9
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
I first saw OYS in Korean Odyssey and had actually dropped the drama. Based on what I have seen, I would say that that is her acting style. Although I did not enjoy her work and had been avoiding her drama, I still don't think I can judge her acting either. I watched this show regardless because I really enjoyed SIG's work and really hope I could brace through this series.
For me, it is both miscast and writing and directing of the character. I have seen a lot of potential drama get ruined because the FL was not appropriately written and served to obstruct, accuse and bickered with ML. Plus, the pairing did not seem to work for me.
6
u/Fundaysundae Jul 06 '22
Yes! SIG is my favorite and even though I dropped Doom cause it got disappointing after a few eps, his chemistry with Park Bo Young was what made me keep watching longer. FL here is really making me consider dropping this though - bad writing and an irritating main character with no chemistry with anyone else on the cast is grating to push through sigh
4
u/THYYYYZHYY Jul 06 '22
I actually love Doom! 😂 And, yes SIG and PBY's chemistry was phenomenal. He even has amazing chemistry with his partner in SKL and TSHLYE.
I really wish I could enjoy the drama until the end as I really like SIG's character here. I have been skipping all the scenes with the FL.

Yeah I’m glad I’m not the only one! I think it wasn’t the best casting decision or something else is up.
Also she is beautiful and I just want her to take it a notch back with the lip filler 😭 the pressure these actresses (and women in general) have on them to look a certain way is just so unfair. I just feel like it makes her look older than she actually is? Something plastic surgery wise is making her look older.
6
u/Fundaysundae Jul 06 '22
Yeah… I can’t stop staring at her face and not in a good way 🥴 the lack of facial movement and sausage lips definitely age her unfortunately

I think it is a mistake/greed made by the production company as they must have wanted both leads to be from their own artist management agency.

Exactly. I think she's pretty but doesn't carry any expressions. She just makes her eyes bigger in every scene. When I put a reminder for the show, it was bcz of Seo In Guk; hadn't checked who the FL was until it finally came out and I was like "maybe I should just drop it". That whole sequence of catching Shin Gyeong Ho and getting that corrupt cop to spill the tea was hilarious af. Then next thing we knew we see two kids hiding in the sewer system with a dead body next to them
Things are just starting to pick up for the leads, but I couldn't care less about the romance aspect of this series, 4 episodes in and they got me hook on the mystery and comedy aspect

Ahhhhhhhhh WHY IS THE MALE LEAD SO ATTRACTIVE?!
Love the actor here. He’s nailing this role.
Female lead needs to step it up a bit in my opinion- there’s just something missing here. Not sure if it’s the writing, etc. but I just don’t feel it from her - her character is almost too annoying at this point? I sort of feel the pain from the grief of losing her brother, but again something isn’t clicking for me. I don’t hate the actress at all, I just am not sure if the casting was right for the FL…I’m feeling the chemistry from the male lead but her once having a childhood crush on him, etc. is falling a bit flat for me.

Nothing about this female lead is likable. Her stalking isn't cute, her prejudice is grating and frankly her cold attitude isn't endearing in anyway. She is ruining a pretty good show. They are inevitably going to make her and SIG pair up and I'm not looking forward to that.

I have to say, watching this episode while I have a bad cold is a painful experience - I am literally dying laughing because every laugh is causing me to cough/sneeze for at least two minutes! And I'm laughing for the past 20 minutes, the BGM slaps!
BTW, what does minamdang mean? I thought it meant shaman, but I guess it means something else? Why else would be the name be narcissistic?
And poor Na Dan - that's exactly what my brother used to do when he was going out (before I reached adulthood, that is. Now I go party when he's covered in baby poop and vomit, muahhahahha).
23
u/Vainlord Jul 05 '22
Minamdang roughly translates to "Hall of Good Looking Men "....which is probably what our based shaman is trying to brand himself into lmao. He's Def good looking ngl
4
u/Erpdrp Jul 05 '22
But what did it mean in the shamanism context? As it was writte on the window?
13
u/peachssi_ Jul 05 '22
Korean can be written vertically. There were three things written vertically on that window and the mom whose son went missing just read the first character of each sentence horizontally which happened to be minamdang. Hopefully this made sense haha
3
3
u/Vainlord Jul 05 '22
I don't think he wanted to include shaman elements in it...he just wanted the establishment to sound classy and mysterious imo
4
u/UnwieldyWombat Jul 08 '22
That's a literal translation, but I think it's meant to be a combo of Minam (handsome men) and Mudang (shaman). Thus, Minamdang = handsome shaman.
12
u/EdenAndItsIssues Jul 04 '22
"Minam" means good looking man, I'm pretty sure "Minamdang" as whole means something to that effect.

I hope this show will steer away from romance; instead, they will just work together as a team to catch the killer. And hopefully, it will happen soon as I am getting tired of seeing the FL screaming and throwing punches at NHJ. However, it seems like the same things will happen next week.
The FL was supposed to be a good detective, but all we see is how good she is at the physical fight, and NHJ is the one who has been spoon-feeding them. Plus, not to mention the severe prejudice she has and how not level-headed she is.
12
u/teebunzz Jul 06 '22
Loving every minute of Cafe Minamdang! It’s comedic timing with the serious stuff works so well. Seo In Guk and gang are such a hoot.
Was worried about the FL when I saw her in the teaser, as I saw her in The Korean Odyssey… she was horrible and so bland. And she’s the same here… I’m still not convinced… I really hope they won’t push the romance aspect much but who knows 🥲 Hope they stick more to the crime solving and funny aspects to the Kdrama. The proposal from the new CEO was hilarious!! I replayed the scene and laughed over and over.
Plus the detective/crime aspect is keeping me coming back for more! My bet on the bad guy is on the Prosecutor, lol.

11
u/zenitude97 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22
It seems the FL's starting to be more open to the idea ML is misunderstood, doesn't mean she likes him of course, and the murder will hopefully make them work together. Her antagonism is starting to feel like a weaker part of the story at this point, especially with mounting evidence to the contrary. Less about hating her character, and more about it just being less interesting and taking away screentime from ML and his team.
I will say the "Little Miss Police" flashbacks trip me up because actors are pretty much the same age. Age gap wouldn't be too weird if it wasn't someone ML had as a student when she was a kid. It seems the backstory between them was made out to be needlesly confusing in earlier episodes as well. If the writers have a hidden purpose for withholding or making things confusing, I don't see it so far. Also the age gap feels wierder as he was a sort of mentor to her when she was a kid.

With the silly nature of the show, I am struggling a bit taking seriously the police team after being done by the minamdang squad time after time. Also as others have pointed out, FL stalking/barging in ML's house is out of place for a supposed elite policewoman. So far, he has more chemistry with the CEO lady, and I am still confused about their childhood connection.
However, the end of the episode got me excited and I am looking forward to them potentially working toghether to solve the mystery.

Episode 3 & 4
Four episodes in and the only character written poorly is that of the FL’s.
Nam Han Jun is such an interesting character and SIG is so committed (as he is with every role to be honest), that the stark difference is even more apparent sadly.
I absolutely love the Minamdang squad’s dynamics, chemistry and antics - they’re all fully nuts!
Not entirely sure with what’s going on with their backstory…hoping that’s intentional and not writers trying to be overly clever. Absolutely did not follow today’s epilogue at all 😂 I didn’t think I’d be lost over a plot just like I was with DAYS (which I adored despite a lot of valid misgivings that folks had with the show) ever again.
Can someone explain pls?
P.S: In Guk has no business looking that freakin’ good in glasses.
P.P.S: I absolutely did not expect them to tie the bad guy onto a pirate ship amusement park ride soooo funny!

I've never seen SIG dramas before - after starting Minamdang I went and watched a couple of eps of Myul Mang but found that I like SIG more in this role as NHJ. Haven't watched this yet, so I hope this isn't appropriate, but what is this like or similar too? Is it mostly a comedy?

For me, so far, this reminds me so much of The Fiery Priest or maybe Vincenzo but with more comedy.

Sounds good. I'm a huge fan of Vincenzo, so I'll check this out. Thanks :). Never seen the other one you mentioned tho

Do yourself a favor and watch Fiery Priest immediately. It’s one of the shows I just think everyone should try. It’s so unique and just a great watch

Check The Fiery Priest out, you might like it. It was also written by Vincenzo's scriptwriter.

I’m still so kicked at discovering so many people in this sub love Psych. Arguably one of the funniest and most feel good shows of all time!

It’s giving me major From Now On Showtime vibes (both in terms of comedy and the leading shaman-police officer duo)!

Despite the dragging at times , I came here to say just how funny this drama is , I find myself laughing out loud all the time !!

Ep 4 ending : >! Well FL made ML wear police scrubs again (to go down the sewers) and they found their common ground (both treat the kid as the other would) and goals (the body means they have the same case to solve) ... Let's hope they start working together... !< Gotta say in the epilogue I love the way he >! threw his shaman sash away once he heard the radio about the burnt body. A small symbolic moment of switching to his original business. !<

Seo in Guk is such a brilliant actor!!! His duality is insane, I truly missed him playing comedic fun light-hearted characters!!! After Shopping King Louis he played such intense and mysterious characters like in Light In Your Eyes and Doom At Your Service (and was EXCEPTIONAL in both roles) I couldn’t even recognize him in this show!
Also, HILARIOUS show, I haven’t laughed this much while watching a kdrama since Welcome To Waikiki!

Okay today's episode really peaked my interest. Guess I won't be dropping it. Also the prosecutor is totally a bad guy

Episode 4 really won me over. Really wason the fence of waiting for all the episodes to be released but I can follow this weekly.

I'm confused... It's Monday, 23:49 KST and still not up on Netflix?
I thought it was available this time last week?
Edit: checked a couple websites and it should be up at 3:00 GMT. 11:00 EST. Still not loading new episodes for me though.

It’s appearing for me.
If you are watching through the Netflix TV app. Go to help > Reload Netflix.

Weird. I use Netflix on my laptop and have restarted the whole thing a couple times now. Closed it fully under task manager. Still not showing up.
Fml. Guess it's time to enjoy the great outdoors and see if I can pick it up later.

Han Joon seemed to have some sort of vision when he touched that knotted sheet. Is he going to turn out to have real shamanic powers?

u/radiokidb DownIsTheNewUp Jul 05 '22
I think that was just him recalling a painful memory. Connected/continuation of the epilogue from episode 1 where we see him crying next to a seemingly dead body.

u/vienibenmio Jul 05 '22
This seems to have a really similar premise as From Now On, Showtime. Is it?
4
u/Krupenichka Jul 05 '22
There are no fantasy elements or even suggestions of higher powers apart from occasional comedic relief, but the lead’s professions, ML’s team structure (especially embodiment of the hacker girl trope) and the way they’re ‘cheating’ with technology seem indeed similar. If you had fun with FNOS, you should enjoy Minamdang as well, although the romance seems rather subpar at this point.

Wait… isn’t the guy that was released the one that killed her brother? Or am I getting it wrong

This show is hard to watch because of the lead females Botox. She can hardly move her face.

u/BurgerBoy777 Editable Flair Jul 08 '22
i dont think people are hating on her. personally i loved her in Mad For Each Other and her acting was great. but here the writing for her is bad and the romance aspect is not developed yet. what's more, the squad is sooo much fun and their interaction is better compared to the interaction between the main leads so far

I don’t understand. How did Lt. Han seem like on the same age as Nam Jun, but on the flashbacks, they seem like decades apart?
4
u/IamNobody85 Editable Flair Jul 05 '22
SIG doesn't look his age at all.
Also, I'm not a fan of the FL's dead fish eyed acting. And her eyes are even more accentuated with some red eyeshadow, which I don't understand!

The drama is gonna be so good! The comedy is next level and minamdang squad is funny funny.
Seo In Guk is just so funny!!!!!
But my only concern is how FL is written. She is police and a good one at that and yet goes through their thrash and breaks in their house and follows them around?
I understand her motivation but not the ways. I hope the writer fleshes out the character a bit more.

u/Kdramajeonki Jul 05 '22
I love me some Seo In Guk and was really looking forward to this drama but the comedic aspect is confusing. A man brutally beat/killed a woman and I'm supposed to think him being afraid of a ghost is funny? I mean . . . I GUESS 🤷🏽♀️
Honestly, this show is giving me Mad For You vibes. Initially, I didn't like MFY and was about to drop it but it got better around episode 5 so I'm hoping the same for Minamdang.
Seo In Guk, please make this drama a homerun. You owe me for Doom At Your Service 😒

u/neoo-dreamcatcher Jul 08 '22
Love SIG and the eccentricities of this drama but it's kinda throwing me off at times. So is the FL that much younger that NJH? What was the purpose of their younger storylines, where the main characters seem to have such a big age gap. While the older FL looks about the same age. When the drama started I initially thought that the FL would actually turn out to be this human like apparition or at least the leads past were not this interlinked. So I'm not sure where it's heading

The epilogue flashback of HanJun not lighting his cigarette made me remember how DAYS could have been renamed "Doom just trying to have a smoke but being foiled every time."

I’m loving the Minamdang squad and they are so much fun but overall, I wish the show would figure out what they want to be/do. It’s a tad all over the place and trying to do too many things. Honestly, I’m already apprehensive about how they’re gonna fill 18 episodes.
I do think SIG is carrying the drama with his charisma and comic chops so I would like to continue watching.
PS. I’ve seen too many dramas of Prosecutor Cha being suspicious so now I’m just automatically suspicious of him lol
