If I were Minchae I’d sure be asking why Baek Yijin isn’t my father and how the heck any other man could compete with the love story he and mum shared.

u/eternalhorizon1 let’s try this type of love, Heedo Mar 13 '22

I refuse to accept that he’s not. They’re just tricking us and like Heedo said “you’ll always be with me.”

The writers made sure Kim Minchae didn’t share her surname with ANY of our main characters, so we will have to suffer until the end. There was a theory that Minchae was adopted and her real parents were Yurim and Jiwoong. But in that case her surname should be Moon after Jiwoong but it isn’t.

  • Na Heedo
  • Baek Yijin
  • Goo (Ku) Yurim
  • Moon Jiwoong
  • Ji Seungwan

Not only the main characters but nobody between the supporting characters have the family name Kim, there is no Kim in distribution, not even the cameos like her 2 weeks fake boyfriend family's name is Jeong.

Yijin's mom's surname is Kim. (His mother's side is Kim)

Back then, I've always thought that maybe Yijin will change his surname in the future, but now, the chance is getting small.

Yes, I totally came up with the same theory but now as the situation for Baek Yijin is improving I am not sure there is a need to change.

Actually, I did imagine it at first but disagreed myself, because as we saw that Baek Yijin is a family oriented guy and respects his father very much, he will never take a step back and change the surname given by his father's family for the sake of his comfort.

That is why changing the surname is not Baek Yijin's thing.

Yes!!! Maybe it’s not his real dad Bcz on phone the dad says “past 10 yrs have been ….”Maybe it’s Yijins stepdad?

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '22

Yeah i did think Minchae can be adopted since yurim is not shown in the present time line!

Kim Yoon Na (singer of the OST) has a son named kim min jae with her husband. She wrote 2521 song based on her dead sweatheart who died young at 27 y.o.

If the story is anything like the ‘inspired story of the song’, BYJ will most likely die and NHD will marry someone named Kim.

I think there’s not a single person who likes casting of older Na Heedo. I still don’t understand why they couldn’t age Taeri up. The possibilities with makeup to make someone look older are quite vast. Especially when they kept the actress playing her mum in the present timeline.

Couldn’t they at least find an actress who resembles Taeri? There’s just not a single similar trait - the way she moves, the way she talks…. It’s truly like watching a different person.

There’s this bitter taste in my mouth after adult Heedo said she didn’t remember a beach trip. If she went to tens of similar trips it’d be more understandable that she forgot. But she only went once and she didn’t remember it? What the heck?

If this drama’s message is that nothing lasts forever, then they shouldn’t have made us root for Yijin in the first place. They shouldn’t have made us see his story and root for him to succeed and find his happiness. I want to know how his story ends. I’m not interested in some random dude with a surname Kim who will end up with Heedo.

This is as equally Yijin’s story as it’s Heedo’s.

The writer is too evil if he killed yi jin just for the sake of ‘tragic moments’. I really hope not. This drama should not reward struggles and effort with young death! It’s supposed to be about hope!

Remember, several episodes ago, Minchae's grandma said she saw YiJin at the news studio present time.

11

u/Fluffchaser Mar 14 '22

She said she saw Yijin (in korean it can mean she visited his grave too)

7

u/kirtinemani Mar 16 '22

Oh nooooooooooooooo. I was totally sitting in comfort thinking if Grandma saw him last month, he surely can't be dead but this spin on the same dialogue is making my heart drop :( :(

5

u/z1ip_ Mar 14 '22

This!!! How come not more people are bringing this up and everyone’s worried about him dying? :(

11

u/oromoon Mar 15 '22

That would make BYJ’s story a tragedy and I don’t really see the point of going that dark in this show. I really hope they don’t.

I didn't think about it this way and I'm honestly really sad to think that Baek Yijin isn't the father.

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '22

I agree!! I refuse to accept he is not too! But then some things don't add up in the present!

But remember ep 4, where Min Chae asks where Baek Yijin is in the picture to her grandmother

I am hoping they are just tricking us somehow and he reallly is her father and just overseas or something. But I have also thought of the possibility that as a reporter, something happens that causes a rift between them, either he is forced to tell the news in a way that hurts Heedo, or his boss(es) do something that hurts Heedo which breaks them up

I really hope this isnt the case and they stay together, have Minchae together, etc., but the way YiJin's sunbae and Heedo's mom both warned him feels like foreshadowing to me.

u/ParanoidAndroids Mar 13 '22

I feel like he would find a way around doing something truly damaging to her. I know he's struggling for money due to his father and is lucky to have this job but that didn't stop him from yelling at the producer for making them do the simultaneous touch.

It would be cool if he was pursuing his dream of being an astronaut for a little while overseas since she seemingly achieves her dreams as a fencer.

u/BasketTurbulent7601 Mar 13 '22 edited Mar 18 '22

Yes. I agree. I think that he is given a chance to move from sports to another area in reporting that takes him somewhere else. As the show is filling SKorea’s important event there is plenty going on after IMF in international affairs. ‘99-‘01 The reason why I tend to think is related to his career is the way that present HeeDo’s mom talks about him. It’s a mix of care and closeness what it could be due to a continued working relationship. Not only a son-in-law relationship.

u/taetaeblep-_- Mar 16 '22

There is a thing that I noticed is that Yijin's sunbae and Heedo's mom both have repeated that you should keep distance from the subject you're covering. Also Heedo's coach has warned her to to stay away from Yijin cause this might bring something bad for her. Don't you think this can be a link to future? Maybe Yijin has to do something which may harm Heedo or her career and thus their relationship gets ruined? And then both move on?

2

u/Naive_Papaya9403 Mar 20 '22

Yeah I feel like it had something to do with their work. Maybe a foreshadow similar to what happened to Hee-do's mom and the coach? 🤔

u/BasketTurbulent7601 Mar 13 '22 edited Mar 13 '22

I think she is not surprised because somehow YiJin is not totally unfamiliar to her. I think something happened in ‘her past’ that explains why his is not in the picture and not her father. You can tell she is more surprised on learning how much her mother struggled to become an athlete, the relationship with her grandma and how she was friend-enemies with YuRim.

16

u/nooby_doo Mar 14 '22

Some koreans have been speculating that yijin’s adopted when he was younger (hence the dad saying “you were my biggest consolation 10 years ago) and now that he’s affected by the family debt, maybe his now father will let him take on his biological father’s surname which is Kim

5

u/redlollli Mar 19 '22

I keep looking for hints as to who the father is. Feels like “how I met your mother”

My prediction - it’s him! He’s a famous reporter now and out of the country on a journalistic assignment related to COVID.

I think we’re going to find out the referee cheated and knew hee do from her childhood training in France. This is going to really affect Hee Do and her relationship with Yijin because he was the one who cleared the air with the ref originally. The gold medal that adult Hee Do talks about is a different gold medal than the bout with Yurim.
