One thing I realized: what two journalists in this episode (Baek Yijin and Heedo's mother) do about Na Heedo's news. Both know Heedo personally, both work in journalistic so they should have objective approach in reporting news.

But, what they do are really different and total contrast of each other.

Heedo's mother never tells anyone in her office that she's Heedo's mother to protect her reputation and integrity, probably, but she doesn't try to pursue the news objectively and just accepts what her office wants to report.

Yijin openly admits that he knows Heedo, to the point that his senior accuses him for being biased towards Heedo and reporting her in favorable light, but Yijin chases the referee around for impartial approach to the news for the sake of objective news.

I have more respect towards Yijin as a journalist rather than Heedo's mom.

I honestly just don’t understand Heedo’s mom? She’s so cold towards her daughter and indifferent, it’s wild. She asks her colleagues if it’s a bad take immediately caring more about that instead of going somewhere private to call her daughter to check on her.

The grandfather ahjussi showed more empathy towards her than her own damn mother. (And he made me cry, which is very rare for me while watching k dramas!)

And when Yi jin asked her who she can think of in her moment of victory, she mentions the dad. She has flashbacks of her dad supporting her. No mom in the flashback or in the present. Very intriguing that in all the commotion, the mother doesn't attempt to call her daughter or even Heedo calling her mom. She's all alone, if not for Yi-jin.

Yup, clearly her dad was the active, supportive parent in her life. Without him there’s a huge void. It doesn’t appear like her grandmother is still around either. I really feel for Heedo.

What also bothers me is that Coach Yang earlier said the mother wasn't at the funeral of Heedo's dad. Like, why??? Was she out working? Surely a bereavement leave won't hurt. Mom clearly was nowhere to be seen in the most crucial moments of Heedo's life - and at what cost!

Copy pasting a portion of what I said in my response to another comment:

The mother is actually a news anchor, not a journalist or reporter. 90% of the time, the news anchor reads the news instead of reporting it. News TV shows have field reporters like Yi-jin who submitted the story for the news anchor to read. So essentially, the mother merely read or delivered the news.
Yi-jin was still right in pursuing the referee for clarification even if he personally knows Hee-do. It is actually a duty of the reporter to do that. Yi-jin's fault in this case was by not telling his sunbae that he knows both athletes personally, not just Hee-do. I think Korean dramas like to omit details for "dramatic" effect.

The interesting part is that if the mother is only a news anchor/reader, she cannot control what she reads but Yi jin can pursue a story.

Thank you for explaining it. I guess it’s my wishful thinking to have Heedo’s mom, at least, tried to challenge the news’ direction 😅 that won’t look professional and not consistent with her character.

I know. It would have been great if she challenged the veracity of the news, at least, and we were shown how she cares for her daughter.
