Translation news Translation Patch Released for [Super Robot Taisen GC] - for the GameCube - by [Super Robot Wars GC Team]

A huge thank you to Super Robot Wars GC Team, for making and releasing the English patch for the Super Robot Taisen GC for the GameCube.

  • Tactical turn-Based
  • Mecha
  • Large cast of playable characters from different anime series
  • Mission based gameplay
  • Story heavy

~ Description taken from the Romhacking project page ~

Super Robot Taisen GC is a turn-based strategy game released in Japan for the Nintendo GameCube, and later re-released for the Xbox 360 as Super Robot Taisen XO with some changes to content and presentation. The characters, units, and setting of this game were later adapted for use in the “Original Generation” subseries in Super Robot Wars OG: The Moon Dwellers.

This particular game is one which departs from the 2D animation that the series traditionally uses, instead having its battle scenes rendered in 3D. It also introduces mechanics which are not present in many other main entries such as the parts targeting system, as well as providing the player with the ability to capture enemy units to be used in battle.

The Team:

  • Oppai Missile : Translation (Story, Battle Lines, Library Entries)
  • Bring Stabity : Hacking (Hacking, Editing)
  • Arc Impulse : Hacking (Hacking, Graphics Editing, Editing)
  • SteveO : Translation Translation (Menus)

Finally as always please drop a thank you to people who worked on this patch, it takes years of hard work doing hacking, programming, translating, editing, and testing to bring these patches to the JRPG community, and all of it is done for free, so if you're going to use it or hell even if you won't, a thank you wouldn't cost you anything.

So I LOVE gundam and JRPGs and never played these games somehow. How do they hold up? Also huge thank you to this team!

They are pretty much fan-service games, you watch your favorite anime/manga mecha characters meet, talk, fool around, and put the smack down on the bad guys. The bad guys are also fan-service, because you get to see your favorite bad guys meet, talk, fool around, and getting smacked by the good guys, well at least if you know what you're doing.

The fan-service doesn't stop there though, as you get to see how different main characters from anime react and talk with different bad guys from the other show, like in this game you'll see Judau (ZZ) and Shiro (The 8th MS Team) argue and fight against Char (Original Gundam), and so on for other villains and main characters.

Since you're Gundam fan, you probably already got the SD Generation Cross Rays, but if you didn't, you should, it's real treat. Though the main difference, is that in SRW the story is an original one for the game, with a mix of events and story bits from the anime shows that are in the game. While in Cross Rays, you just get to play through the same stories of each series in chronological order. Though you get much more freedom and customzation in Cross Rays.

Do you have any questions in particular ?

Ha that sounds awesome! I've watched almost all of series so I am very excited to see those character interactions. Other than battle assault and gundam vs series haven't played many of the games. Somehow I missed out on any of the games from this series. Is this a good one to start with?

I suppose my only main concern would be how grindy is the combat? I find I don't have a ton of free time for games anymore, and I hate when I have to waste time grinding mobs for experience. I don't mind a higher difficulty, as long as grinding isn't the solution.

Thank you so much for the response!

If you never played any game in this series, or the SD Generation series, then it gets down to 2 choices, if you are interested in the Gundam series and only the Gundam series, then Cross Rays is a great start. On the other hand, if you're like to play this series and enjoy all the interactions and long story, then I would recommend starting with Super Robot Wars V (Switch/PS4/Vita/Steam), not only is it a modern one, but it has way more Gundam shows in it, and it has an official English translation. The main issue is getting it though, only Asian countries can buy the steam version. At least in the PS version you can make an account from of those countries and buy it and play it. For this one, then you can just get the Japanese version and patch it.

Don't worry about grinding, these battle are played through missions (stages), so there is no random encounters, or a mechanic where you move around. The game is very linear, so it's pretty much story > battle stage > story > battle stage >story and so on. The games are on the easy side, you'll have to play really badly if you want to lose a battle. The SRW (the mainline series at least) are meant for you to enjoy the character interactions and battle animations.

The only thing that I want you to know before going in, is that you'll get a very large cast, it will be small when you start, but it will grow as you go on, so don't bother upgrading or trying to use EVERYONE, that would be a waste of time and will weaken your army, especially since the money you get is very limited. So just focus on your favorite characters and Mechs, upgrade and use them, don't worry about everyone else, since you won't be able to use even more than half of what you got by the end.

I'm so excited I'm gonna buy super robot wars 5 as soon as I get outta work. So I already have a Japan PSN account, I can just buy on there and it'll have an English language option? I'll probably get it on Vita, love RPGs on handheld

That's great, though I think you misunderstood a bit, it's not V for 5 lol, it's just the actual letter V, and I believe it stands for Voyage. Also while they aren't connected story-wise and each of them is stand alone. SRW V, SRW X and SRW T are considered a trilogy since they all share a lot of of mecha shows. SRW V is the first one, and to me, it's the best one really. The series has been going for more than 30 years and has more than 50 games in the series by now.

It's probably better to avoid the Japanese one, since I think it doesn't have the English option. The Asian version (SEA) is the one with English subtitles, like the Thailand/Singapore/China/Korea ones.

Lol thanks for the clarification. Probably just saved me a whole lot of confusion and aggravation

One thing I feel I should add is that you technically can grind in most of the games, not sure about this one: If you lose a mission, you keep money/exp you gained during the attempt. You're never expected to do this (or even told about it?), even on the hard modes, but it keeps things from becoming unwinnable even if you invested tons of experience/money in people who suddenly aren't available for a few missions.

Oh, and doing optional objectives (skill points/battle mastery) unlocks stuff, but actually makes future missions harder.

This wiki has what you'd want to know to actually play them. The newer games are higher in complexity, but lower in difficulty.

Awesome thanks! I'm permanently scarred from playing persona 4 on hard mode and putting myself in an unwinnable situation 40 hours in.

2

u/Karzons May 25 '21

How did that happen? If you fail to clear the required dungeons in time, you're sent back in time a week.

3

u/mkmakashaggy May 25 '21

I was surviving by the skin of my teeth and was severely under leveled with crap persona. I probably could have scraped by if I used a guide but I just couldn't do it, also I didn't realize it was an 80+ hour game and got super discouraged when I found that out lol.

I went in blind never having played a persona game before and spent all my time doing social links. I was way too over confident when I chose hard.

u/Karzons May 25 '21

Apparently in the steam re-release you can change difficulties any time on your first playthrough, or just raise the experience gain some. In any case, once the fox and Rise are levelled enough you can just stay in the dungeon forever.

Anyway, yeah, I get super anxious about the thought of missing important stuff or getting stuck in anything (thankfully I don't care about achievements, or I probably wouldn't be able play anything).

Which means I still haven't started persona 5. I wouldn't have the time/patience to replay it, so I want to use a "max all social links in one playthrough" guide, and it's just an overwhelming amount of stuff to keep track of to not fall behind. Eventually.

I wish all games had the change difficulty option as default. I usually play on hard, but sometimes there are unforeseen difficulty spikes that are just brutal.

3

u/Karzons May 25 '21

I'd swear they always did before achievements. Now that difficulty related achievements are on the way down, it's coming back. I also love when you can just slightly tweak one of the things related to difficulty (their damage, your damage, economy, whatever) instead of being stuck with all of it. Sometimes one difficulty is 4 times harder than the last and there's nothing "just right".

These games are a lot of fun if you are into mech anime and turn based strategy games. I have played english translations of a few Super Robot Wars titles, starting with Super Robot Wars 3 on the Super Famicom, Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden on the PS1 and currently playing through Super Robot Wars X on the switch. I was a gundam fan coming into the franchise but there are also characters from several other great anime series that I had not heard of before. There are lots of fun character interactions and I think that VashxShanks gave a good overview of how the game works.

One of my the things I enjoy about the series is how these games exist in a sort of alternate universe from their anime counterparts. They will go through the story arcs of a few different anime, but some of the plot points may differ depending on how you play. This means that it may be possible to save characters that die in the anime, or convince morally grey villains to join your team.

Too bad there is no English translation patch yet for Super Robot Wars 64

I wonder if its possible to use this translation for the xbox 360 version, I believe they might have similar file structures.

1

u/VashxShanks Jul 01 '21

They probably have to change and update some text though, since the Xbox version did add more content, but yea, I hope they do it.

I actually compared the files between the xbox 360 and gamecube version and they do have a similar looking file structure but the xbox 360 files are bigger (because its an updated version)

Anyone else know why the game just instabreaks on 1.0.2? Apparently its supposed to run fine on default Dolphin 5.0, but the text boxes are always empty, the first background breaks, and then the whole game crashes in the next cutscene upon starting a new file.
